Iagos Persuasion

From the very start of Othello, one of Shakespeare’s most tragic plays, the audience is hyper aware of the fact that things are just not going to end well. For me, these formidable sentiments stem from the play’s central antagonist, Iago, who I consider to be the most disturbing villain of all of Shakespeare’s plays. While some villains are blatantly cruel, murderous, or vengeful, real fear is evoked by villains like Iago, whose honest and gentle façade masks the sick mind of a misogynistic sociopath. These thoughts lead me to question what makes Iago powerful enough to have so many people at his emotional disposal. The answer quickly became obvious – his power lies in his speech. Iago implements Aristotle’s very basic methods of persuasive rhetoric, ethos, pathos, and logos, to masterfully manipulate the thoughts, emotions, and actions of characters like Roderigo, Cassio, and Othello.

Beginning with Roderigo, whose sheer idiocy we must briefly ignore, Iago uses an intricately simple web of words to ensnare his victim. Roderigo questions Iago’s true feelings towards Othello, to which Iago uses the very essence of ethos, the method of persuasion in which the speaker establishes himself as someone to trust and to be perceived as a figure of authority, to persuade Roderigo of just how intensely he abhors Othello. Iago eloquently and passionately explains how he was overlooked for the position of lieutenant, despite his battle prowess, and goes on to make statements like, “I follow him to serve my turn upon him”(1.1.42), and “In following him I follow myself”(1.1.58). He masterfully presents Roderigo with simple, obvious facts about himself that prove his true objective is to bring about the fall of Othello. Furthermore, his repeated, even incessant use of the pronoun “I” further drives his argument that Roderigo should trust him, as his hatred for Othello matches

Edward goes on to say “race is the number one reason why all the odds were against Othello” (Edward 7). Many different interpretations link to Othello’s downfall, including the part Iago and Desdemona play, and how the main character’s personality and actions affect the fate of the other characters. A point much contested by critics is how Shakespeare presents Othello himself: some, such as A.C. Bradley, hold the view that the General is a noble tragic hero, whereas F.R. Leavis would contradict this by claiming Othello to be a weak man whose fatal flaw is jealousy. Iago is a key instrument in Othello’s downfall and uses deception to plant the idea of Desdemona’s infidelity. He adroitly persuades Othello to accept this idea in a very short length of time. Shakespeare first uses Iago to develop the theme of perception when Iago hints at the topic of Desdemona’s supposed affair in 3:3. Iago then claims to have asked about Cassio ‘But for a satisfaction of my thought’. The idea of ‘thinking' is repeated many times after this, and is significant because of the way Shakespeare has the characters appear to perceive each other – for example how people see Iago, who is mentioned many times to be ‘honest’ – Othello even says ‘I know thou’rt full of love and honesty’ – and this dramatic irony allows him to successfully carry out his deception. For a moment, Othello declared Desdemona as faithful and honest, yet out of the same mouth tarnish her fidelity. His tragic flaw was his gullibility, and jealousy was the cause of his depravity. Iago's meaningful efforts to raise doubt and use manipulation entices the emotion of pity that resulted in his deception and Othello's downfall. In classical attire, the "appeal to pity is praised as one of the most powerful emotional means of persuasion because it uses not language," (Smith, 2008, p. 3) but also conveys visual aid and imagery of suffering. Although, jealousy was the root of his displaced actions, it was all too late and Othello condemned himself as "an honorable murderer, if you will/ For naught I did in hate, but all in honor" (5.2.301-303). ...Amanda Lomas English 99 January 24, 2013 Effective Persuasion In the letter, “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” written by Martin Luther King, Jr., was written while king was in jail for being a part of the Birmingham Campaign, which was a non-violent protest to end segregation in the U.S. In the letter, King explain that he is disappointed in the clergy for attacking the members of the African American non-violent civil rights movement and that direct action is the only thing left for them to do. He goes on to say that he hopes “the dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away.” In this letter, King has a very effective argument by using several different persuasive appeals. One persuasive appeal that King uses is called ethos. Ethos refers to the credibility and trustworthiness of the writer or speaker and can often be supported through style of the message and tone. Throughout the whole letter, King has a very even tone. At the beginning of the letter, he calmly explains why he is in jail and is not angry or mad and goes on to explain the four steps to his direct action. Having a calm approach like King shows in this letter makes the reader more inclined to listen rather than having a threatening or aggressive tone. ...About the Six Principles The Six Principles of Influence (also known as the Six Weapons of Influence) were created by Robert Cialdini, Regents' Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Marketing at Arizona State University.
