...Delivering Bad News Analysis I chose to analyze a news conference that was given by Mayor Bing of Detroit on December 1, 2011. The purpose of the conference was to address the current state of the city’s financial crisis and reports that the State of Michigan is coming in to do a financial review. I will evaluate the physical aspects of the speech, including appearance, chosen location, and body language. I will also evaluate the content of Mayor Bing’s speech and give my opinion on whether or not he appropriately addressed the crisis at hand. Mayor Bing wore a professional, navy pin-striped suit with a crisp white collar and a lighter blue tie. What we wear can project or evoke different emotions. According to Carole Kanchier of the Huffington Post, some of the things blue represent are authority, structure, communication, dependability, trust and loyalty (Kanchier, 2012). These are all emotions that Mayor Bing needs his audience to feel for his message to be succesful. To further his authority Mayor Bing stood behind a podium that had the Seal of the Mayor clearly displayed on its front side. He also chose not to stand alone. Standing with him were members of the Detroit City Counsel, Labor Board, people he refered to as the faith-based community, and members of the Detroit business community. ...Over the past month Toronto’s Mayor Rob ford has made the headlines, when openly admitted his use of crack cocaine while he was drunk one night. Even with all his public apologies all the misleading accusations continued to follow him. Ford was later to be accused of having a prostitute lover. The city of Toronto voted to strip Ford of most his powers after discovering that a majority of the accusations were true. During the council meeting Ford in an outraged knocked down a 60 year old council member; later he did apologize for his actions during the meeting. Critical evaluations enables any person to determine the creditability, distinction from fact or opinion, detecting media bias, understand the authors purpose and requires critical thinking skills. My family is not of wealth and I paint in order to provide them with a roof over their head and food. My wife sometimes complains that I am married to my paint brushes and not her, but she knows that I produce wonderful paintings and that alone does not bother her. I have done many projects, little and small, but this specific one is special. I painted it when I had returned home after taking a trip to the Templo Mayor. While in the city, I purchased a woodcut canvas in one of the marketplaces to begin working on “Tenochtitlan.” I thought it would be appropriate to paint a picture of Tenochtitlan and present it to Hernan Cortes as a gift for his conquest of the Aztec empire. I thought that if he liked my painting, I can receive the recognition as an established artist that I wanted. I like to paint using a very basic method but my trademark is detail because I believe detail brings out the focus of the painting. When looking into the credibility of the source of information, I would find it difficult to argue that CNN is not considered a credible news source. Understanding that there is some form of censorship or government control over media is important to remember however, and I believe it is important to use multiple resources when looking into information. I believe for this particular news clip, there was not much to call into question regarding source credibility, as this was more of a one-on-one interview with former Mayor Giuliani and his remembrance of the tragic events of 9/11. Based on this, I was not at all skeptical of credibility. Reading between the lines Ultimately, there were a few aspects of the news clip that I found interesting.
