“If you aren’t making someone else’s life better, then you are wasting your time.” (Will Smith)
Although this quote by Will Smith is only a few years old, its basic message can be traced back to the Greek and Roman philosophers. Even then these famous philosophers taught their scholars that helping other people accomplish their goals or generally helping or saving other people from their reality is the real essence of life. In my opinion this statement is true because helping other people in need makes you not only their savior but also helps you feel good about yourself. Trying to improve our world is something that is a vital part of our lives due to the fact that no one wants to leave this place without others remembering what you accomplished in life. At some point in life everyone comes across the question: “What did I do with my life? Was my life worth living? Will I be remembered or forgotten?” In this short essay I want to evaluate the relevance of this quote in our everyday life and afterwards focus on its influence on entrepreneurship before coming to my conclusion.
The everyday decisions we make may seem small for that particular moment but they add up to the big picture called life. That is why every decision you take should be one that has a bigger meaning to you. Nobody will remember you for how many episodes of “House of Cards” you have watched the last few weeks or how many hours you spent partying or sleeping. People will always be measured and remembered for what they did for the people around them and the environment they live in. By developing apps that make life easier, scripting programs that enable you to do things faster than before or by inventing completely new things leading up to discovery, adventure and exploration of what is around us, people accomplish something truly important for all of us. But this is not only limited to technology but to all areas of life that are important to us like literature, chemistry, physics, medicine, economic science and peace just to name a few. Just looking at the sector of medicine, countless lives have been saved through the development of new drugs or healing processes as well as technology. Just imagine this world without medication, x-rays, ct-scans, clean hospitals and vaccines. All these things have been developed by people who changed the world. Afterwards the medication was tested to ensure that it will improve our life standards rather than harm them before then being introduced. Every person in this whole process has done a part in making our world better in terms of medicine and we should be grateful to them all. These are all categories that are awarded with the Nobel Prize to recognize the few authors, scientists, politicians and other extraordinary people that have fundamentally changed the way we live; but we cannot forget all the other people who have helped in the process.
In entrepreneurship changing and improving our surroundings is very much possible as well. By introducing new strategies, changing company structure to the better and by investing into the future you can change the world. Small and seemingly unimportant decisions that you make, may have big impacts in entrepreneurship and thus making the correct calls can lead to very positive impacts for our surroundings and environment. By creating jobs, making your employees’ lives better through wage raises or extended vacation times you do things that make their lives easier and better. Just sitting in office and staring at the monitor earning your money is in my opinion just wasting your time. It is one thing not being able to change the world due to physical or mental illnesses to make our world better – although even that is possible looking at Stephen Hawking and many others - but if you are just straight up lazy it means that you waste time in which you could be productive in which you could make decisions that can help people around you and even your friends, family and most importantly your life as well.
Of course most people will not get awarded with the Nobel Prize but still all of us can do or try something that makes the world around us better. Everyone must find this on their own but deep inside your heart you know when you do the right thing. Nobody is perfect and nobody is only productive in life. Most of the time it is only necessary to work hard, focus on ethical and moral behavior and live your life like you want to live it. Small things make our world better. You do not have to be one of the great inventors, explorers or scientists. That is something people and philosophers of the ancient world have noticed and passed on to the next generations. You can make this world a better place by being kind and giving hope to people who need it most.
