We like the idea of going to America. There will be more opportunity there then there is here now. There are so few jobs and too many people. I think this could be a great opportunity for us, but I am so scared. It’s a long journey and I just don’t know what to expect. Friday - It’s time to leave for America. My journey starts today. I am very excited, and yet still scared. I need to leave today because I need to be at port a day early to go thru the inspection process. Sunday – It’s time to set sail for America. I just finished with the inspection process. First they had American doctors give me a full examination. They wanted to make sure I didn’t have any diseases or lice. The examination took forever and I am exhausted. The disinfectant bath was terrible. I wonder if my luggage faired any better than I did. Boarding was a mess. There are so many people. I found my bed and got my pillow which is also my life preserver, so I better not lose it! I also received my pail and utensils for my meals. Guess I will settle in for this ten day adventure across the Atlantic. Wednesday – I wasn’t lying about the people. I feel like a sardine in a can. There must be 500 of us crammed in this compartment. And the fact that the dining room isn’t separated from the rest of the area makes me sick...

We decided there was nothing left here in Poland; Pa cannot find work to be able to support ma and us kids. We have saved enough money to make the journey to the new world. People are saying we would have travel by boats across the water. I am scared because I cannot swim. Pa says we will be ok, there is a fee to travel and Pa has found odd jobs to do to earn the fee. The day has come to say goodbye to our family and friends. We board the boat after paying our fee there are so many people. I really hope that the new world is worth this long trip the person that allowed us to enter said the journey could take up to a month. WOW that is a whole 30 days. I have brought a journal to keep track of the events as it happens on this new traveling experience. Day 1: the excitement of the travel and there are so many children my age I have made a new friend his name is Edward, he is alone so we have taken him in with us so he is not alone. Paul Johnson Saybrook University Abstract Popular media typically portrays the myth of the Irish-American experience as the story of starving paupers fleeing Ireland in old broken wooden ships and arriving in some unwanted land, such as Boston or New York. Always remaining in their dockside slums, working dockside as longshoremen until they were able to become police officers. This same myth continues to hold that their descendants continue to live in three storied houses within ethnic ghettos where they have big parades of St. Patrick’s Day. The Narrator describes what is happening to Poole's actual mechanical body as if it had no person relying on it, as something that is simply replaceable. After Poole discovered that he was indeed not a human, his quest was to get rid of his reality tape in order to have the "opportunity to experience everything. Simultaneously. To know the universe and its entirety, to be momentarily in contact with all reality. Something that no human can do" (Dick 236). If someone does not value something, it suggests they do not believe in its worth, importance or usefulness. To begin with, Plato was not an empiricist; someone who believes that knowledge is derived from the experience of their senses.
