“One in five people who resign from their roles do so because of a lack of opportunities within their company, according to research by Penna.” (Hrmagazine.co.uk, 2014) Most people have some type of goal or aspiration they hope to reach in their future. This article tells about the negative effects of not having opportunities to advance in an organization. If employees see that they have no chance to advance within the organization then they may be willing to find another job where they can excel and move up the ladder. Employees that understand that they have a chance to advance will stay with the company longer. I am sure that most people have some sort of long-term goals or some type of dream job they would love to obtain. The utilization of a career plan will make nearly impossible goals reachable. A career plan acts as a roadmap and will lead anyone in the direction they plan on going. The article states that 20% of employers admit they have no formal approach to succession planning. (Hrmagazine.co.uk, 2014) It is important to have a formal approach to succession planning because every organization will have some type of job open up in the future and it keeps organizations from losing key employees. Succession planning should be performed at all levels in the organization and not just the top management positions because it will be more effective. Career Management Skills

...Reflective essay ------Career management skills In recent years, the world of employment market has changed quickly and significantly. Technological, social, culture and economic development and changes tell us that the career market is more actional and complex. More than that, changing organization structures and forms is influencing the different kinds of jobs which graduates look for, as well as the skills needed to do those jobs. Holden and Hamblett (2007) state that the graduate labour market is complex, with the developing of “new graduate jobs”. Therefore, for the best economic and social outcomes, graduates should be able to flexible understand the world of work and self-manage the career development process. In my opinion, there are three important career management skills that I need to improve for my employability development. It can help me to find out what kinds of jobs will suit me and ensure future happiness. However, building a career is not only about finding a suitable job and keeping it, but about taking continual career choices in answer to a changing labour market (Arnold, 1997). You can select different career exploration tools such as: ability profiler, computerized interest profiler, career exploration tool, work importance locator and Interest Profiler. O*NET is the nation’s primary source of occupational information. I liked that this database contains hundreds of standardized and occupation-specific descriptors. It is perfect for me because I am looking to change careers and while I have an idea of the career direction I want to go, I don’t have a specific job title in mind. This search database will open the door to descriptions of numerous and different travel occupations even some I never heard of. The Interest Profiler helps you discover different types of work activities and occupations that you might like and find exciting. The other career tool I found to be very useful was the Work Importance Profiler, which helps you determine what is important to you in a job. One area, I looked into was Event Planning and found some interesting job titles and descriptions. If you are called an Event Planner, the requirements depend on the experience level and a bachelor degree is strongly preferred, but not necessary if the experience is there. The higher the job level such as Assistant Director, Director, Executive Event Planner the higher the experience and education level needed; some require a masters’ degree in addition to the work experience. ...future leadership development. The importance of business leadership is well articulated with the observation, a good leader can make a success of a weak business plan, but a poor leader can ruin even the best plan. That’s why developing effective leadership using a consistent talent management program at all levels across the organization can return significant business value.
