Importance of Eduactional Games

According to AJ Martin (July 13, 2013) in his case study entitled “Video Games as a Part of Life” he stated that, “Some parents see video games as a brain-damaging waste of time, but recent studies show the opposite, video games help people, no wonder why they use it for rehab, training and just plain fun. It’s no secret that the Philippines is addicted to video games, in fact if you’re in a city in the Philippines, you can find an internet cafe within walking distance, and if you enter that internet cafe, there are bound to be teenagers there playing DotA or Counter-Strike or some other game. This isn’t a bad thing because it develops friendship, teamwork and the ability to socialize.
According to Jason B. Almonte (June 22, 2011) in his case study entitled “Implementation of a digital game-based learning environment for elementary Education” he stated that, “Video games have gained high popularity nowadays that researchers have taken an interest in its use as an educational medium. Based on previous studies on educational game development, the project has developed video games for mobile handheld devices that cover Grade 6 Philippine Educational System Science curriculum topics. It aims to serve as a supplement to the student to further augment what they have learned inside the classroom and be able to use it in practical applications. Ethics and Entertainment

...------------------------------------------------- Introduction ------------------------------------------------- The video game industry is powerful and incredibly profitable. Its $18 billion in annual sales, large workforce, and even larger consumer base makes it a lobby one would not want to attempt to regulate unduly. Yet, violence in America, especially among young people, is a known problem. Some research indicates that video games are a part of that problem. Indeed, playing video games may be linked to antisocial behavior and permissiveness about violent behavior. For this paper I highlight the importance of that issue - that violence and video gaming may be linked, and censoring gaming to reduce that link is politically problematic - but turn to a lesser know issue. Educational gaming, a form of gaming assumed to be without controversial content, can also be the subject of public censorship. ------------------------------------------------- Video Game Industry ------------------------------------------------- With over $18 billion in total sales and a workforce of more than 213,000 the video game industry has grown from a somewhat small portion of American entertainment to an industry that influences the leisure and livelihood of many people (O’Holleran, 2010). There is power in having that standing, an any attempt to curtail that power would likely encounter a great deal of resistance. That means censorship of the video game industry would pit the real and perceived First Amendment rights of commercial...

...developing technology and the popularity of video gaming had been growing in recent years as well. Many people or institutions therefore investigate the negative impacts of video gaming. Since video games often include violence or aggressive language, people often think that video games lead to violent crime such as robbing, bullying and so on. However, Video games do not have direct impact on teenagers’ criminal behaviour because it is not proven that it leads to any criminal activities. This essay will examine the relationship between video games and teenagers’ aggressive behaviour and argue that video games do not assist to any criminal activities. Furthermore, video games also influence teenagers in a positive way. In recent years, many researchers found that teenagers tent to be more violent in behaviour after playing video games which might lead to crime for instance. Bösche (2010) states that video games lead to both aggressive behaviours and positive cognitions simultaneously. One of the positive effects of video games is securing players' attention and it can be implemented in education. Ferguson (2010) suggests that the violence and excitement of video games can draw players' attention easily, therefore video games can be used as a medium for spreading positive information. For example, educational tasks can be included in a first-person shooter game which appears to be a life saving mission. Besides conveying the importance of life, practical knowledge can also be spread...

Video Game Addiction

...Video game addiction An Assignment Submitted by ______ ITT Composition I (EN1320), _/_/_ Video game addiction Video game addictions is a rather new syndrome since the computer games are relatively young – the oldest being only slightly older than twenty years. Video game addiction is a dangerous phenomenon and is detrimental to the realization of reality by a human being. The official definition of the syndrome is the following: video game addiction is a severe compulsive use of either video or computer games. Indulging in using the games excessively may hinder one’s everyday life. Video game addiction may display itself in the following way: social isolation, excessive amounts of time spent on gaming, diminished imagination, irregular mood swings, too much focus on the in-game achievements, behavior, which is modeled by the rules and realities of any given game (Lindsey 2007). Video game addiction is not going anywhere, as it recently acquired enough infamy to make it worthy of inclusion into the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, under the “Conditions for Further Study” heading. It was deemed worthy of inclusion by the American Psychiatric Association, due to enough evidence, as well as, the fact that video game overuse results have similar symptoms and effects as seen in other psychological addictions. Computer Gaming Effects on Academic Performance

...computer and video game industry has grown considerably over the past decade. In 2005 a study conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation: "Generation M: Media in the Lives of 8-18 year-olds", showed that over 80 percent of teenagers had a video game player in their home. The widespread use of video games has led to a series of questions. The most common question discusses the effects that the video/computer games have on the academic performance of the gamer. Researchers have found that each situation should be handled independently because the effects vary from individual to individual. Positive Effects Many people focus on the negative effects of these games and fail to see the opportunity for learning and growth. According to Raise Smart Kids: “The Good and Bad Effects of Video Games” there are several positive effects that come from spending time playing video games. Most games do not teach kids math, history and other subjects, however, they do provide students indirect opportunities to learn principles that can help them in their academic pursuits. Certain types of video games can help train kids to follow instructions as well as helping them develop their problem solving and logical thought processes. These skills translate directly to the classroom as students are asked by teachers to complete tasks and are presented problems that require them to use logical problem solving skills. Kids can also learn inductive reasoning and hypothesis testing. Games will often...

How Much Is Too Much Tv and Video Games

...Internet and TV: How much is too much for young children? Na’Shaye Lewis English 112 How much TV and gaming, educational or not, is too much for young children? In the USA, 47% of children ages 2 to 18 years old have a television set in their bedrooms. On a typical day, they spend an average of 5.5 hours using media; including television, computer games, and the Internet. (Kaiser Family Foundation Newsletter, 2001) While there are a lot of different television and online educational sites that can be beneficial to a child’s education, parents should often monitor or regulate the amount of TV and Internet young children watch because it inhibits social development, shortens children’s attention span, and sometimes it is not always intellectually stimulating. Social development can simply be explained as improving the well-being of an individual in society so they can reach their full potential. A society success is directly linked to the well-being of each individual citizen. With so many things on TV that can be negative there are so many shows and internet games that get your children up and physically active and wanting to learn. Shows such as Yo Gabba Gabba which teaches children how to eat healthy, get up and move around, how to help take care of the planet you live on and how to care about what others may feel. Ni Hoa Kai-Lan teaches the importance of social development as well as discovering new ways to recognize and deal with their emotions. As it is said children...

They do so in many different ways and in many different settings. One important area is education. Conducting research in an educational setting should be an important aspect of every educator’s professional life. Best and Kahn (1993) describe research as “the systematic and objective analysis and recording of controlled observations that may lead to the development of generalizations, principles, or theories, resulting in prediction and possibly ultimate control of events” (p. 27). Education in a research setting is done to improve school practices and at the same time to improve those individuals who strive to improve those practices (Best & Kahn, 1993). The importance of research in an educational setting is often overlooked, however. Those in academia often consider research as a way to earn tenure or remain in favor by the university that employs them. Faculty who wish to thrive in the university setting must publish or perish in order to remain employed. Educators often forget that they are failing to fulfill their pedagogical responsibilities if they do not remain current in their...

Playing Computer Games and Study Habits of Hcdc Students

...children today tend to choose staying at home playing computer games or any other gadgets instead of playing outside, making friends with other children and exercise their mind and body which is very helpful to their health. One of the main reasons why students are attracted to computers is because of computer games. Modern technology is now very accessible to people especially students, they can easily go to computer shops near the school to play and most of them spend the whole time with it and forgot their responsibilities as a student which is one of the disadvantages of playing video games. There are also good things that a student can benefit in playing computer games because there is also other types of video games that are educational which can help them enlighten their minds, discover new knowledge, improve their thinking skills, stuffs that they think it never existed and experience new things that they have never encountered in their entire life. Educational computer games can enhance students’ motivation to learn, but only depends on how they play. Some students get hooked on to playing computer games so much so that they tend to lose interest in other more important things like studies. Some of them who don’t have any knowledge about computer games before are now addicted to it because they are easily affected by peer pressures and also because of ignorance which tends them to play games they have never experienced before. ...THE EFFECTS OF COMPUTER GAMES TO THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF THE GRADE VI PUPILS IN ___________ELEMENTARY SCHOOL S. Y. 2010 - 2011 A Research Proposal Presented to the Faculty of the College Department ________________________________ Quezon In partial fulfillment of the Requirements for Research 2 ________________________ October 2010 Chapter I INTRODUCTION Background of the Study Computers are ubiquitous. As computers have become less expensive they have been purchased by more and more families for their homes. Because of this, many children begin to use computers at an early age. Even if computers are not available in their home, children almost certainly will begin to come into contact with computers in school. Some adults are amazed by how readily young children use computers. Many children find that using computers gives them a sense of power and accomplishment. And, unlike many adults whose first or primary contact with computers is work related, most children first use computers for entertainment purposes and games. This is by no means the only use that children have for computers. Because computer use is promoted in schools, and because computers are so ubiquitous, children have a great deal of exposure to them. Not everyone, however, is comfortable with the use of computers by young children. Some, including the Alliance for Childhood, have called for a halt to the...

Video Games: Learning Process

...Video Games: Learning Process In this modern age, society is overrun by the latest entertainment available, video games. Across the world, many people find their time consumed by a game on their phone, computer, or television. Video games have been in daily lives since 1958, although not being as extreme as it is today. Nowadays, these games are associated with violence, gore, and anger; however it shouldn’t be stereotyped because of one genre. Like movies, video games have different genres (action, adventure, puzzle, simulation, etc…). In a way, video games are movies with a few exceptions: there's a controller, the player is in control, and in some cases, there aren’t any characters. Essentially, the player is the main character, but with extra perks. Video games provide players of all ages to learn and adapt to surroundings to proceed to the next level. Video games give people an improved perception, develop cognitive abilities, and help disabilities. Video games as stated before, came out in 1958 with a simple table tennis game. This game just provided entertainment to college students and helped innovate programming as society knows it. Many companies wanted to gain profit in video games during the 1980’s, producing many different devices and genres to entertain society. A company known as Nintendo gathered the first copyright for the games they were producing, causing other businesses to shut down because of lack of creativity. Different genres started popping up, and...
