Individual Glow Sticks Research

III) Methods and Materials
To test my hypothesis, I used four individual glow sticks, which was my independent variable. Two of the glow sticks were green, whereas the remaining two were red. However, in order to test the effect of bright colors against dull colors, I wrapped one green and one red glow stick in wax paper in order to make their colors dull, and left the other two unwrapped to give off a brighter color. I conducted one trial per glow stick, ending with four trials in total. I also used two male Betta splendens, both of which were contained in their own twelve ounce glass jar filled with water. To monitor the initial temperature of the water inside the jars, as well as to keep the water at a constant temperature, I used two …show more content…
First, I set up the hotplate and allowed its temperature to rise to 78°F. When the hotplate finished warming, I placed the two twelve ounce glass jars side by side on top of it, and positioned the cardboard barrier between the two jars. I then proceeded to fill both jars with an adequate amount of water to comfortably hold each fish. I placed a thermometer into both jars to monitor the water until it reached 78°F. Once this temperature was reached, I removed both thermometers as I knew the hotplate would not allow the water to rise above 78°F. I then encircled the hotplate with the white construction paper. Once both jars were properly set up, I first transported the control fish to its jar in a fish net. I then completely submerged the fish net into the jar, and let the fish swim out. I repeated this step with the experimental fish, transporting it in a fish net and letting it swim out into its jar. Once both fish were settled in their jars, I wrapped one green and one red glow stick in enough wax paper to dull the colors they gave off, but not too much as to completely mask them. To ensure the wax paper did not fall off its respective glow stick, I taped the paper together and onto the ends of the glow sticks. Completing this task also gave the fish some time to acclimate to their surroundings before the experiment began. Once both glow sticks were wrapped, I continued with the …show more content…
For instance, I could use two pieces of both green and red colored paper. There would be bright and dark green, as well as bright and dark red paper. However, rather than just situating the paper in sight of the fish like I did with the glow sticks, I could modify the paper to be more visually appealing to the male B. splendens. With each piece of paper, I could cut out the size and shape of a male B. splendens. If the paper were to look like a male betta, it is possible that it could initiate an aggressive reaction from the experimental fish, as male B. splendens have a tendency to behave in such a manner between one another (Snekser et al. 2006). After cutting out the shapes, I could then attach each one to a stick. By doing so, I would have the ability to freely move one paper fish around at a time in front of the white background provided by the construction paper, and in view of the experimental fish. The presence of the paper fish would also eliminate the problem of the fish seeing its own reflection in the jar, as it was found that male B. splendens opt to react to other male bettas rather than to mirror representations (Craft et al.

...Effective cancer screening methods are used to detect or identify the presence of a specific cancer before the individual displays any symptoms of cancer. Early detection of a cancer through screening can save the life of a person who may have died without screening detection. Early detection of cancer can also provide a less costly and more effective treatment than if the cancer progresses requiring more advanced or drastic treatment. Screenings tests for the more common cancers such as breast, colon, prostate or cervical can be non-invasive or only slightly invasive. The majority of screening procedures are non-invasive which is more cost effective, patient convenient, and does not require any patient aftercare. Screening tests usually have a recommended age and frequency. As people age there is a higher risk of cancer and more screening is recommended. There are some considerations on whether to screen or not to screen such as; is the cancer common or fatal, are there detectable symptoms, and how reliable are the test results. There are currently two slightly invasive screening tests used to detect prostate cancer. They are the digital rectal exam (DRE) and the prostate-specific antigen blood test (PSA). The DRE is a quick exam that can check the prostates health. A doctor inserts a gloved and lubricated finger into the rectum to feel the back portion of the prostate for size, irregularity or abnormal areas (www.cancer.gov, 2012). DRE is the only method in which a physician...

Forget What You Know About Good Study Habits by Benedict Carey

...Forget What You Know About Good Study Habits By BENEDICT CAREYSEPT. 6, 2010 retrived from :http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/07/health/views/07mind.html?scp=1&sq=Study%20Skills&st=cse Every September, millions of parents try a kind of psychological witchcraft, to transform their summer-glazed campers into fall students, their video-bugs into bookworms. Advice is cheap and all too familiar: Clear a quiet work space. Stick to a homework schedule. Set goals. Set boundaries. Do not bribe (except in emergencies). And check out the classroom. Does Junior’s learning style match the new teacher’s approach? Or the school’s philosophy? Maybe the child isn’t “a good fit” for the school. Such theories have developed in part because of sketchy education research that doesn’t offer clear guidance. Student traits and teaching styles surely interact; so do personalities and at-home rules. The trouble is, no one can predict how. Yet there are effective approaches to learning, at least for those who are motivated. In recent years, cognitive scientists have shown that a few simple techniques can reliably improve what matters most: how much a student learns from studying. The findings can help anyone, from a fourth grader doing long division to a retiree taking on a new language. But they directly contradict much of the common wisdom about good study habits, and they have not caught on. For instance, instead of sticking to one study location, simply alternating the room where a person...

The Decline and Fall of Literature

...The Decline and Fall of Literature November 4, 1999 ANDREW DELBANCO E-mail Print [pic]Share [pic] [pic]In Plato’s Cave[pic] by Alvin Kernan A couple of years ago, in an article explaining how funds for faculty positions are allocated in American universities, the provost of the University of California at Berkeley offered some frank advice to department chairs, whose job partly consists of lobbying for a share of the budget. “On every campus,” she wrote, “there is one department whose name need only be mentioned to make people laugh; you don’t want that department to be yours.”1 The provost, Carol Christ (who retains her faculty position as a literature professor), does not name the offender—but everyone knows that if you want to locate the laughingstock on your local campus these days, your best bet is to stop by the English department. The laughter, moreover, is not confined to campuses. It has become a holiday ritual for The New York Times to run a derisory article in deadpan Times style about the annual convention of the Modern Language Association, where thousands of English professors assemble just before the new year. Lately it has become impossible to say with confidence whether such topics as “Eat Me; Captain Cook and the Ingestion of the Other” or “The Semiotics of Sinatra” are parodies of what goes on there or serious presentations by credentialed scholars.2 At one recent English lecture, the speaker discussed a pornographic “performance artist”...
