Individualism is the moral stance, political philosophy, ideology, or social outlook that emphasizes the moral worth of the individual. Individualism is something thats makes a person one, giving them the right to be an individual, the freedom to equality. In the novel Anthem By Ayn Rand individualism is a central idea explored through the story. The main character Equality 7-2521 is living in a society where the concept of individuality is non existent, he is very curious about the world he lives in and the science and nature that surrounds it. But unfortunately it's a sin to think/wonder such things and that it's not good to be different from his brothers but it is evil to be superior to them. In Ayn Rand’s novel Anthem the word “I” is lost and there is no individual. Just the collective people working for a common goal. The individual cannot survive in this world because it is a sin to set yourself apart as an individual. According to the text (Rand 36 ) it states”International 4-8818 and we are friends. This is an evil thing to say, for it is a transgression, the great Transgression of Preference, to love any among men better than the others, since we must love all men and all men are our friends. I think this is Rand’s way of symbolizing the way collectivism destroys the individual. Another example that supports my statement is the society that Equality 7-2521 is born, is a caricature of collectivist ideals. No member of society can have a conventional name, and everyone is instead assigned a name like “Freedom” or “Equality”. Before going to bed, men chant, “we are nothing. Mankind is all.” Here citizens are assigned to jobs unrelated to their skills, rather than being allowed to pursue their passions. Equality 7-2521, who is diffrent, has ambitions of being allowed to work as a Scholar. His hopes are crushed though. According to the text it states"A Street Sweeper! A Street Sweeper walking in upon the World Council of Scholars! It is not to be believed! It is against all the rules and all the laws!". This piece of evidence shows the all the
