EVENT REPORT

INDORE MARATHON 2013- AN IIM INDORE INITIATIVE
We are pleased to inform you that Indore Marathon’13 was held on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 - Gandhi Jayanti. This was the 6th edition of Indore Marathon by IIM Indore and carrying forward the success story of the last five years, this year our aim was to make everyone run against the modern day atrocities faced by the women of India. The myriad of crimes against women is one of the biggest issues that are crippling India these days. Our small effort through this Marathon was to sensitize people about it and the discrimination that they face in life, and to spread this message to as many people as we can. Being a premier institute of education in Central India, it is our earnest endeavour to spread this message across. On October 2 Madhya Pradesh (not just Indore) ran Against Rape and Discrimination. From the bottom of our heart, we would like to express our thanks and gratitude to you for your support in making Indore Marathon a grand success. EVENT PUBLICITY As far as publicity goes, Indore Marathon has reached new heights. On social media, we have been actively promoting the event through our facebook page (Indore Marathon-An IIMI Initiative) and that of MARD (~150000 likes). The Indore Marathon website (www.indoremarathon.com) had 2500+ registrations before the event day which speaks of its popularity and reach. The event was powered by Nai Duniya which ensured statewide promotion of the event. The event was closely followed by the newspaper with almost an article everyday starting from September 15 and October 2. Our radio partners BIG 92.7 FM ensured that there was enough buzz about the event through the airtime of 105 minutes. This radio channel is immensely popular amongst the youth and helped us connect to them. Satyam Multiplex supported us as our Multiplex partners. Event promotions through stills and videos were done during the movie shows. Treasure Island is the most popular mall in the city and they helped us promote the event by giving us advertisement space. Apart from these traditional methods of promotions, the Indore Marathon team also came up with innovative ways of promoting the event such as nukkad nataks and flash mobs. The flash mob and the skit were received well; they were performed at some of the most crowded places in the city (Treasure Island, Chappan Dukaan and Rajwara). At this point we wish to say that in all our promotions we have made efforts on our part to ensure due visibility to all our partners without whom the event would not have been possible.

INDORE MARATHON 2013- INITIATIVES

In line with our promise to scale up the event and take it out of Indore, we took some initiatives.
BHOPAL MARATHON IN COLLABORATION WITH MANIT BHOPAL

For the first time in the history of Indore Marathon, a Marathon was conducted at NIT Bhopal. A marathon under the umbrella of the mother event and in a similar fashion was conducted in Bhopal on the 27th September, with the help of the management of MANIT Bhopal. The event was unfurled by Dr. Appu Kuttan, Director, MANIT Bhopal and the chief guest for the occasion during the pleasant evening hours of Thursday at the porch area of the prestigious campus. It was a 5.5 km run, conducted for both boys and girls category. The event was smoothly conducted with close to 700 people participating (550+ males and over 150 females). Apart from MANIT, other prestigious colleges of Bhopal especially Gandhi Medical College, Indian Institute of Foreign Management, School of Planning and Architecture, also participated in this endeavor.

For the first time we went outside Indore with our event; we wish to make this event a state wide phenomenon
TRAINING CAMPS

In line with our motive of promoting the cause and the marathon among the masses of Indore, Indore Marathon in collaboration with GOLD’s GYM (our fitness Partner) conducted training and fitness camps every morning over a period of 3 weeks before the event at 2 major parks in Indore, Meghdoot and Lalbagh. Good crowd turned out at both the training locations.

The whole purpose of this program was to make the common Indore-ian, marathon-ready. The agenda included a variety of health and nutrition guidance apart from general exercising. Special cardio-vascular training including breathing and stretching techniques was also covered; all of these are aimed at increasing stamina so as to enable a prospect to reach the finish line of the marathon without much difficulty. The regular sessions of this kind had been carried out since 12th September 2013 till Gandhi Jayanti (2nd October 2013) in the mentioned parks. The sessions were overseen by instructors from Gold’s Gym who had all been national or state level athletes and are now professional fitness trainers. With these training camps we ensured that our role is not limited to just organizing the marathon, but goes beyond that and helps us in achieving our goal of promoting the cause while also ensuring people are mentally and physically prepared to take part in the event.

The Poor and Their Money

...i The Poor and Their Money An essay about financial services for poor people Stuart Rutherford Institute for Development Policy and Management University of Manchester January 1999 The Department for International Development will be publishing this work in New Delhi during 1999. For further information contact Sukhwinder Arora at the Department for International Development, New Delhi, India. ii PREFACE Over the last 15 years initiatives to provide financial services to poor people (the ‘microfinance industry’) have come on by leaps and bounds in terms of size and reputation. Despite this, the industry is still only in its adolescence and our understanding of why and how poor and very poor people use microfinancial services ( and why many choose not to use the services that are available) remains partial at best. This essay takes the reader on a ‘voyage of discovery’ that seeks to both deepen her/his understanding and encourage her/him to apply that knowledge to the practice of microfinance. The voyage that Stuart Rutherford offers is a unique one based upon years of careful and detailed personal research. It does not take a deductive approach that develops a theoretical model of the financial behaviour of poor people. Nor does it follow the ‘case study plus best practice’ approach that has been favoured by many practitioners when they write of microfinance. Instead, it adopts an inductive approach - based on thousands of conversations and meetings with...
