Influencing Group Communication

The five bases of power are coercive power, reward power, legitimate power, expert power, and referent power (Stephen P. Robbins, Timothy A. Judge, 2009). The three types of formal power are coercive, reward, and legitimate. Coercive power, this source of power is also problematic and can be subject to abuse, cause unhealthy behavior, and dissatisfaction in the workplace. Reward power this source of power often give rewards for doing what they want with a highly probability they will do it. Legitimate power this source of power that provides social hierarchies, cultural norms, and organizational structure like the CEO, a minister, a president, people holding official positions. The two types of Personal power are expert power, and referent power. Expert power happened when demonstrate expertise and people tend to trust and respect what is say. Referent power this source of power is referent to a charisma, charm, admiration, or appeal, and one person respect another, and strongly identifying with that person in some way. (French and Raven's Five Forms of Power, copy)
These bases of power affect communication at ADT in different ways. My department FSC (field support services) holds 15 teams and each team has between 14 to 16 team members, some of the supervisors use different bases of power to accomplish the work. The most effective power is the reward power that give recognition to the members when accomplish the productivity. Some of the supervisors recognize every month the best member who gets 100% quality and performance with a gif card, something simple but motivates the group to be the first. At the same time the supervisors are motivated to be the best when manager give him or her juicy bonuses every month when the team obtain the best results in productivity and quality need it. This is like chain reaction if you give me what I need I give you something. Human Resources, give to the employees time off for perfect attendance in the month, their use this to motivated the employees not to call in. It is different kind the rewards the company uses to motivated the employees.
Coercive power is extremely use at my work, like any company ADT has their limits, you can get rewards but if you do not do well you will get fire if you do not provide with a quality and performance require by the company their give you a coaching, verbal, writing, and final. ADT use this to help the employee to be better. Some employees do not understand, and think is okay not to follow instruction and is how companies have turnovers, and use more time and money to trained new people.
Legitimate power is the one that has the power with specific position like ADT CEO, he has the power to change cultural norms, organizational structures, and have social hierarchies. He is in charge to run the company with the help of presidents in different areas.
Expert Power is when you demonstrate expertise, and people trust you and respect what you say, at ADT some supervisors I truly respect, every time I have a question their have an answer for, and you feel more comfortable in a workplace when you know you are not alone and count with people who can help you.
Referent power is hard to found in a workplace, as today at ADT with three years working for this company, I just found the charisma through the company from just employees to the CEO, ADT is committed to support in all the disasters and helping people who needs help, runs fundraiser within the company and give the same amount collected. This is a good way to support the community.
Anyone is capable of holding power and influencing others you do not need to have and important job (French and Raven's Five Forms of Power, copy), but just to recognize the different forms of power. You can have power if you know how to use it.

...is a summary of a paper presented at the 28th Annual Conference of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action in November 1999. This paper was submitted to the peer-reviewed academic journal Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly for consideration. ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬_______________________ Nonprofits’ Use of the Media in the Influence of Public Policy: Is there a correlation between exposure in the media and positive results? DAVID A. RICE STRATEGIC POLICY CONCEPTS Abstract: The extent to which interest groups and the media influence policymakers has been a popular topic of research. However, there has been little research on interest groups’ attempts to use the media for the specific purpose of influencing policymakers. This paper examines the attempts of nonprofit advocates in Massachusetts to use the media to influence public policymaking. The research was conducted through a survey of policymakers, the media, and registered lobbyists for nonprofit and for-profit interest groups in Massachusetts. The results of the survey indicate that the majority of nonprofit advocates do not use the media as a tactic to influence policymakers primarily because they do not believe policymakers are very influenced by the media. The results also found that policymakers would view nonprofit advocates as being more influential if they frequently obtained media coverage of the issues important to them. The paper posits that the ...

Social Influences Paper

...Abstract Kowalski, R.,& Westen. D. (2005).  Psychology (4th ed.). Hoboken, NJ: Wiley This paper will examine basic concepts of human interaction from a psychology perspective. It will describe at least two examples of how human behavior changes based on social situations. The two behaviors that this paper will examine are teenagers who drink in a crowd of their peers but don't drink when they are alone and taking part in bullying in a group but not alone. In both of these scenarios the individual who participates in the behaviors to fit in are “changing their attitudes or behavior to accommodate the standards of peers or group by a process called conformity (Kowalski & Westen, 2005).” The paper will also discuss precursors and consequences of both of these behaviors. Next, the paper will analyze and identify any associated phenomenon like social facilitation, social loafing , or groupthink. Last, there will be some discussion from the NIMH on whether or not these behaviors necessitate intervention. Social Influences Paper Introduction “Sociologist and philosophers have recognized that people behave different in crowds than they do as individuals and that a crowd is more than the mere sum of its parts (Kowalski & Westen, 2005).” Human behavior changes based on the social situations they encounter. Gonzaga, Marc Ian V. Dela Cruz, Jamella Mariz CHAPTER I I. Introduction “Smoking is dangerous to your health.” Despite of this warning printed on every box of cigarette, people still tend to buy these “cancer sticks”. People are aware of the costs of cigarette smoking, and we know for a fact that, behind a stick’s purpose of giving pleasure or relief, it slowly kills, not only an individual but also the environment. Yet smoking exists. It would have been tolerable for people in their middle adulthood to smoke since they have their personal and somehow dignified reason for smoking, but why did smoking have to invade the adolescent’s realm of pure inquisitive innocence? This research paper aspires to extract some of the factors that have a definite influence on why and how adolescents learn to smoke. Years of research about adolescent smoking have already been conducted, thousands of papers have been printed and many psychologists, researchers, students and professors went through stress just to gather data and information about adolescent smoking. These efforts are very helpful and it continues to spur great awareness among others...

Computer Mediated Communication Paper

...Communication Final Reflection Paper on Group Collaboration Project COMM.444 The online environment, and in particular, computer mediated communication is an effective medium to provide the social aspect of learning emphasized with collaborative learning. Collaborative and cooperative interactions can occur within virtual teams and groups based on how information is exchanged and requiring group members to formulate opinions and facilitate goals to accomplish. The utilization of a variety of CMC tools also helped our group establish a more collaborative and cooperative approach towards developing content and creativity, distributing tasks, creating a more cohesive online work environment. Through formulating certain ideas through our topic of CMC and its influence in online dating, we were able to give and receive feedback and evaluation from peers, gain greater knowledge into CMC principles, develop virtual interpersonal skills and critical thinking skills which are very important (Harasim et.al. 1995).
