The Problem and Its Background

Through the years, global economy is gradually increasing and therefore the competition for jobs will also increase resulting to the greater demands for fully-experienced workers. One of the major stepping stone for you to be able to compete against others is to have a quality that would suit perfectly to the job you are going to apply to. In order to attain these qualities, college universities, years ago has been preparing students by requiring them to take up internships as part of their curriculum. Internship has been proven as an effective way of preparing college students for their future jobs in the industry. Internship also exposes students to the real world experience so that they can gain more knowledge, skills and experience. And it’s also an aid in developing their abilities in order to be more qualified and to have a full potential in meeting a future employer’s expectations. They will be able to develop an expertise and be proficient and to bring out something good in them that they aren’t even aware of. It also helps the students to determine if what kind of profession is best suited for them and to choose from a wide variety of career options and take them as a full-time job in the future.

In providing future workers of today’s world, universities had been responsible in formulating internship programs that is effective and efficient. They basically developed it to be a part of their learning system. Universities, also, is responsible for providing reliable companies for students to where they are going to take their training. They need to recommend companies that are recognized for providing enough knowledge for the needs of the students.

This study aims to provide the readers the knowledge about internships and how it helps and affects students for their future careers. This is also a guide for them to be able to experience early the things that they might face in the future. This can help them distinguish the know-how in the company and specifically, in the job that their going to take in the near future. This is important because this is the stage of progress and advancement in knowing things further about their forthcoming job. It unfolds the abilities they possess deep within and how to be able to use the things they learned by the time they’re already working.

Statement of the Problem

This study was undertaken to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats subsisted on all tourism industry relevant training programs provided by the Polytechnic University of the Philippines to BS Tourism Management students.

Specifically, this study seeks answers the following questions:

1. What are the tourism industry relevant training programs provided by the Polytechnic University of the Philippines to BS Tourism Management students? 2. What is the current status of those training programs? 3. What perceived benefits and contributions do students derive from those trainings in terms of: a. Intellectual improvement b. Social skills c. Professional skills 4. What are the common problems encountered by the students before and during the implemented programs?

This study hypothesizes that the SWOT Analysis that will be conducted to the Industry-relevant training programs of the PUP BS Tourism Management has a significant effect to the improvement of the existing trainings concerned.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The coverage of the study was to analyze the existing training programs practiced by Polytechnic University B.S Tourism students and identify its common problems through its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. This study also looked into the intellectual, social, and professional benefits that the students thought they derived from these programs.

The study limits itself to trainings that follow: Travel agency and Airline operations, and Amadeus program. It does not attempt to intervene with the curriculum, its connected subjects and the like.

Significance of the Study (add something? Elaborate but not lose the thought)

Practicum and other related programs serve as a vital element in tourism industry. Aware of the changing effects of these practiced trainings, this study will be significant to the following:

Students. They will be knowledgeable enough in preparing for the actual operations of their chosen fields, conscious of the risks that can arise through the trainings that orient them on how to solve each difficulty and contribute to their growth intellectually, socially and professionally.

Faculty. This study will let them identify the possible threats that their students may come across before, during and after the trainings they provided. This will also help them maintain or improve the assistance they provide their students.

Department. They could confirm the effectiveness of the existing trainings they had implemented. With this, they could come up with the ideas of improving, maintaining or changing the standard practices if applicable.

Definition of Terms (depends on the intro. At least 7-10)

The following terms are defined operationally and lexically to provide a common frame of reference:

Internship is a method of on-the-job training for white-collar and professional careers. Tourism is the “activities of persons traveling to, and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business, and other purposes” (Walker, 2010, p.7)
