Integrative Network Design Project II Communications protocols are where the rubber meets the road when discussing communications between computers. These protocols set the parameters for computer communication and allow them to communicate in an organized manner. Without protocols a network would be worthless and very ineffective. The protocols help not only in preventing errors but they also provide a way of tracking down errors by giving the user a systematic process to check for possible repairs. Some of the main things protocols do are:
1. Provide private communication capabilities.
2. Give users the ability to authenticate traffic.
3. Organizes packets (Packets are data organized in a specific format containing user information/ handling instructions).
4. Provide a way to pinpoint errors in communication.
The proposed changes to the system are based on the technical vulnerabilities caused by using hardware/software and wiring that is old or not optimal. The current protocols used are acceptable but need to be overhauled in order to provide Kudler with faster communication over long distance. Uniformity of the network is obvious in the current Ethernet network set up built over T3 100 base connections and the versatility of the Novell 4.11 server is a plus; but the Novell uses an Internet Package Exchange/Sequence Package protocol (IPX/SPX).
This protocol is generally supported but not globally supported like TCP/IP. The IPX/SPX protocol works great with Intranet/Intraware and Kudler desires a system that can link customer via several media platforms to products that they would be interested in purchasing. In order to accomplish this ideally the Intranet server would go but purchasing three new servers is not an option when the main goal is optimization. Switching technology must be used in order to give each user device hooked to the switch a full 10Mbps of bandwidth. Just by switching the current 100 base T cables to a switched hub it would give Kudler a significant boost in service times. This can be done without purchasing any special hardware. The diagram below depicts the changes in the network:

There are several differences from the original network setup but basically most of the same hardware can be used. The first big difference is that the router is a Cisco 7505 which if purchased refurbished from the router mall with a 24 month warranty would run anywhere between 159.00 to 3,000.00. Another big difference is the switch technology made available by a cisco series 300 switch. Security in the system has not really been a problem but a good network traffic analysis would afford the company the opportunity to identify any possible abnormalities and form a base line for the system. This would in turn help identify possible threats easier.

The main focus of Kudler is to optimize their current network and this means addressing:
• Latency- The time it takes a packet to travel over a network from the device that created it to the device that receives it. A good example of Latency is a railroad time table. If network/application latency is graphed properly problems can be identified and mitigation steps can be taken ("Network Latency", 2014).
• Response time- The length of time it takes to get a response from a system after a request has been completed. Time starts at the end of the command and ends at the beginning of the answer. Good graphing of response time is needed in order to assess you networks future carrying capacity ("Network Response – Correlsense Online Glossary", © Correlsense Inc. 2015. All rights reserved).
• Jitter- The variation in latency and response time. Jitter is measured in milliseconds and can give a good indications of other problems. Excessive variations or Jitter is a sure sign of problems. ("What Is Jitter?", Copyright 1998-2015 Pingman Tools, LLC. All Rights Reserved).
These factors coupled with throughput, retransmission, and packet loss are some of the top culprits of a slow network. Understanding how they impact the system will ensure proper mitigation steps are taken to reduce the effects of each of them.
