In today’s world, many business need to be sustainable or they will be left behind the curve. There are many business that are able to adapt quickly such as Microsoft or Apple. Then you have business that went bankrupt because they didn’t keep up with current trends. Intel company is a great example of their always trying to keep up with the consumers trends. Due to the rise of smartphones and tablets, the sales of PC’s have been declining in the past few years. Intel has created a product that will help them with their declining pc sales.
Intel had started from humble beginnings. Intel Corporation was formed in Mountain View, California in 1948. It was founded by Gordon E. Moore who was a chemist, Robert Noyce who was a physicist and Arthur Rock who was an investor/venture capitalist. Originally they wanted to name the company Moore Noyce but it sounded like “more noise” which meant that the technology was having some problems. It was initially call NM electronics then it was later called Integrated Electronics (Intel). In its early years, Intel were able to distinguish themselves by making semiconductors. Their first product was a 64 bit random access memory (RAM), which was able to outpace its competitors. In the same year Intel released their 1024 bit read only memory (ROM).
By the 1980’s Intel sales were declining because the growing success of IBM. Intel decided to shift it’s focus to microprocessors. For 10 years, Intel was the primary supplier to the PC industry. By 1991, Intel was able to create brand loyalty with customer selection. At the turn of the century, the demand for their high end microprocessors slowed down. Intel biggest competitor, AMD, had the biggest share of the market, so Intel decided to reinvent itself. The company decided to go beyond semiconductor and in the process they were not successful. They face numerous lawsuits when they were trying to reinvent themselves. In 2005, the company was reorganized and it decided to refocuse its core processor and chipset business. A year later Intel sold their Xscale Processor business for an estimate of 600 million. They sold the business in order to free up financial resources to able to research different innovations.
In the next few years, Intel was able to regain their momentum and was able to regain a majority of the market share when it introduces a wide range of successful products. Intel did stop with it’s innovative products but they acquire different companies. They acquire McAphee, Infineon Technologies, Altera and other companies. By 2010 they saw the decline in their pc sales. One of the reason why people weren’t buying as many pc was due to the popularity of the smartphones and tablets. In response to the declining sales in pc’s, Intel acted fast and created a product called Skylake. Intel knows that it needs to attract more customers to buy pc’s and they believe that skylake will help them boos their sales. Skylake is the sixth generation of their core processor family. Skylake will be able to boost performance and reduce power consumption in their portfolio, ranging from ultrathin laptops to gaming pc’s. A game changer will be that I will reduce the number of wires need for the pc and it will replace passwords with facial recognition. Intel believe that collaborating with Microsoft, they will be able to grow the pc industry. Analysts link the latest decline partly to customers waiting for Windows 10 and Skylake (Clark). Intel believes that in the next few years, more than 500 million customers will be using Skylake. Another benefit that Skylake will be bringing will be popularizing the new laptop models that will be coming out. Intel is able to keep itself be relevant because they are able to reinvent new products that consumers want. By giving the products that the consumers want, Intel will be able to regain their competitive advantage in the PC industry. 1. Open’s today’s issue of The Wall Street Journal and look for an article about new moves being made by a corporation. Specify those decision that are strategic.

In the past few years Intel has seen decline in their pc sales. They knew that they needed to reinvent the wheel or else they would their pc market share. This when they created Skylake, a product that will boost performance, create lasting power and among other things that will make pc more enticing. Intel knows that there is still a market for pc’s but they need to be able to compete with smartphones and tablets. Intel did research and development to figure what ways can they improve the pc. After finding out what needed to be done, they went and created Skylake. Strategically they were looking in the pc overall lifecycle. Intel knows that the pc still has a long way to go before they become obsolete even though there few bumps on the road. Intel knew in order to bring the sales up, they needed a product will need be able to stand out for years and be able to compete in the market. 2. At what level is each of the decisions that identified? Functional/ Business/Corporate? Why do you believe this to be the case?
All of the decisions were developed in the in the corporate level. After looking at their sales in the past few years, Intel knew that they had a predicament in their hands. We got their best engineers and figure out what product will be able to help them boost their sales. After years R&D, they finally were able to create Skylake. Skylake would not be successful if it was for their marketing team. The marketing team were working hard to inform the consumers of the new product that rolling out in a few months. In the end it was successful. They were able to create a hype around the product where consumers were waiting for the new product to roll out. 3. What is your assessment of these decisions? Will they be effective? Why? How do you decided this?
Intel made a create move in implementing a new product that can revitalize the industry. The way Intel can access their decision will be their pc sales. Another way they could assess their decision is if Intel is able to recollect all money the invested in Skylake. Their investment will do more good than harm. They will be effective in making pc be more enticing because Intel will be making more portable. If they are able to convince the early adopters that the product will benefit them tremendously then the early and late majority will buy the products which will lead to sales. Intel did a great job in their marketing campaign because it was able to create a hype behind the product. A few factors that can make the product successful will be if it’s easily accessible and initial price of the product. If the product is expensive it can deter consumers away, the same goes with how accessible the product is. I’m confident that Intel’s new product will help the company in the long run.
