International Financial Management – 6E - 2011
Chapter 19

1. An effective cash management system should be based on a cash budget that projects expected cash inflows and outflows over some planning horizon. It provides for the orderly receipt and disbursement of cash. It also provides for funds organization, where cash shortages are covered by borrowing at the most promising rates and surplus funds are invested at the most beneficial rates. Within an MNC the complexity of the cash management process is compounded because the firm does business in a variety of currencies and the cost of foreign exchange transactions. is an additional measurement to be accomplished.
2. Under a centralized cash management system, the cash manager will have a global view of the cash necessities of the MNC. There will be less chance that funds will be misallocated, like, denominated in the wrong currency. Additionally, under a global view, transaction exposure for the MNC can be more professionally managed. A centralized system readily allows for investing excess cash at the most beneficial rates and borrowing to cover cash shortages at the most favorable rates. Under a decentralized system, the local cash manager is given more responsibility for managing the cash needs of the affiliate than under a centralized system. Consequently, the local cash management position serves as good training for higher level positions within the affiliate or MNC. Also, under a decentralized system, local bank relationships are better developed since the affiliate conducts more of its cash management functions at the local level. This may prove important if funds need to be borrowed locally. But overall, the benefits of a centralized cash management system tend to outweigh its disadvantages.

Management Airlines

... Providing its main service of transport, with little importance paid to luxuries and more focus was put into perfecting customer service and time for money. As more budget airlines such as Jetstar Singapore and Tiger Airways Singapore started to come into competition, AirAsia had to start changing their management plans in order to be able to be the first choice for customers, in terms of rates and service. AirAsia stuck to one aircraft type to minimize training and maintenance costs. Tony Fernandez also started off his team of employees to work as one. This created a strong bond between the employees that in turn shows in customer service. Despite the fact that they were a budget airline, employees were shown respect and awarded for performance, thus creating a sense of pride in working for AirAsia. Sustainable Development

...Sustainable development is appearing with increasing frequency in trade union discussions around the world, as concern mounts over the deteriorating state of our natural and man-made environment. Such threats as global climate change have caught the attention of trade union members, especially with publicity given to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2001),1 the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP, 2000), the Worldwatch Institute (2001) and other high-profile reports. Trade unionists in unprecedented numbers are joining the search for solutions that go beyond environmental issues to embrace such related social and economic conditions as poverty, dysfunctional subsidies, unfair trade and price structures, corruption and unemployment, all of which reflect longstanding trade union concerns. It is significant that concern over sustainable development should be occurring just as the world’s trade unions are coming to grips with the notion of globalization. For although the nature of this phenomenon has yet to be adequately analysed and clarified, it has taken on its own meaning in trade union discussions and policy papers. What is significant for this paper, however, is the extent to which the trade union perspective on sustainable development incorporates its concerns about globalization. Trade union discussions about sustainable development invariably turn to current social and economic developments, and their implications for workers. Throughout history...
