I believe that internships are a crucial factor to getting students the real world experience that many college students lack coming out of graduation. Most students will get to do an internship but it may not be in the field that they would like to begin a career in. Even then it isn’t pointless but I think they could have put their time into an internship where they felt like they had something to work for or had something to prove. If I had an internship in the field that I one day planned to someday land a career in I would work my hardest every day to prove to the employer that I have what it takes and that I am willing to make sacrifices for the betterment of the company. Internships can help break the loop of college students having no experience because they can’t get a job because they have no experience. NSCS could be a tremendous help to all the chapters around the nation by providing events such as private career fairs, mixers, and different social events that will get students that face to face contact with employers. The purpose of this paper is broader and examines several characteristics of accounting internships: the frequency of participation, eligibility requirements, process for securing internships, level of participation, availability and amount of academic credit, area of assignments, nature of post-internship requirements, and benefits to students. Two random samples, one in 1998 and one in 2003, of 100 accounting programs were analyzed in the study. For each program selected, the survey was mailed to accounting program administrators. Responses were collected by fax. The results of this study should be of interest to accounting students, faculty program administrators, and practitioners. Gaining real-life knowledge of accounting tasks and obtaining insight regarding career planning were the two most important benefits identified.
