Healthcare is provided by a team of different professionals as there are many roles such as Paramedics, Nursing, Doctors, Surgeons etc, included in patient care depending on the nature of the illness or injury. It is important when working closely in an environment with people of various professions that a professional way of communicating is upheld to avoid misunderstandings. It is also significantly important to achieve successful interpersonal communication between patients and healthcare professionals to ensure the patient is comfortable and happy with their treatment but also informed correctly about their current condition and/or the treatments they must comply to receive. “Interpersonal communication is defined as a reciprocal, interactive, …show more content…
The key element to inter professional communication is respect for other professions, a successful conversation will occur between two professionals who recognise the contributions that each other provides, additionally with an ability to listen and consider the views of other persons, even if personal disagreement may be present. The term empathy defined as “Intellectual and emotional awareness and understanding of another person's thoughts, feelings, and behaviour, even those that are distressing and disturbing. Empathy emphasises understanding.” (Miller-Keane Encyclopaedia). Empathy is a term typically associated with patient care, however in order to retain successful inter professional communication there must be a level of empathy towards the healthcare worker. Williams, Boyle and Earl conducted a study of empathy levels using 94 undergraduate paramedic students. The following is a visual representation of the results. The results demonstrate that “The JSPE (Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy) empathy level scores were lowest among first-year paramedic students.” (Williams, Boyle and Earl, 2013) Drawing from this study it is interesting to observe that second year paramedic student’s levels of empathy were increased in comparison to first year students.
