When one interviews another about their career path, one learns many things about a person. This paper will be an interview with a person to be referred as Michelle Smith for writing purposes. While interviewing Smith, I realized that my nursing experience has mirrored hers in many ways. Various universities have similar missions and viewpoints. Nursing is truly a lifelong learning process; age does not determine when nurses stop learning.
Summary of Nursing Career
Smith is currently a master’s prepared nurse teaching in an associate level nursing program. Smith adopted a life learning path early in her career. She was an adult student in an associate level nursing program with a husband and two teenage daughters at home. In 1990, she graduated and she began working as a registered nurse. At this point in history, according to Smith, it was highly recommended that two years of medical-surgical experience be obtained prior to working in specialty areas. After working her two years on a medical-surgical unit, she transferred to an eight bed intensive care unit. “It was a different environment back then. If we had a code during the night we ran the code until the doctor made it to the hospital from home. One night a physician was sleeping in his car because his wife was mad and locked him out of the house. He didn’t know we were calling him, so a security guard drove to his house and knocked on his car window” (Smith, 2014).
In 1998, though still working in intensive care, Smith wanted to further her formal education. She returned to college and over a three year

Nurse leaders have very busy schedules because of their organizational roles and finding time to grant a quality interview about their leadership style is slightly out-of-the-box for their daily routines. Interviewing a nurse leader is even harder when the interviewer is working from a remote area in Africa and has to do the interview by phone. The interview must take place so when finally MK, the Patient Advocate/Patient care services of St. Francis Medical Center consented and gave the interview, it became possible to report the personal in-sight of a good nurse leader. This interview report is a summary of MK’s perspectives on her leadership style, changes made because of evolving leadership role, challenges faced as a leader in today’s health care system and the effects of formal and informal power in the organization. Summary below are her answers to the questions asked by the nursing graduate student presenting this report. Evidence & Expert Interview Paper

...Evidence & Expert Interview Paper Kimberly Russell Chamberlain School of Nursing Instructor Sniffen NR 447 Collaborative Health Care Evidence & Expert Interview Paper Introduction I have chosen two SMART goals to research and put into action by the end of week six of class. SMART Goal 1 is the leadership development goal and will standardize the surgical time-out procedure to include all required elements as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and meet the requirements of the Joint Commission Universal Protocol. I chose this goal for myself to ensure that all nurses are consistently including all required information each and every time in the surgical time-out procedure and as a result will increase patient safety regarding wrong site surgery. SMART Goal 2 is the organizational planning goal which is to educate all staff on the required dry time for surgical skin prep liquids used in the operating room. I chose this goal after the sales representatives from Duraprep and Chloraprep gave an in-service and I realized that we were not allowing appropriate surgical skin prep dry time which puts our patients in danger for a surgical fire and increases the chance of post-op wound infection. Goal 1: Leadership Development Through my leadership development goal I will standardize the time-out procedure to include all the required elements as recommended by WHO. I will accomplish this by creating an “All Stop” for time-out...

BACCALAUREATES The progression of nursing was basically originated among women. After all, women were considered to be the caretakers and the nurturer’s of one’s family. Decades ago, nursing was not even considered as a career. Nursing was considered to be a job that was undesirable and unwanted. There was no education for nurses until Florence Nightingale created “Nightingale Training School for Nurses at St. Thomas’s Hospital in London in 1860” (Cresaia & Friberg, 2011, pg. 4). Today, there are different degrees that may be obtained through the educational profession of nursing, The Associates Degree of Nursing (ADN) and the Baccalaureates Degree of Nursing (BSN). There are differences in acquiring each degree just like there is a difference in competencies between the two. When a student decides to go into the program of nursing, that student will have to choose between the two degrees by learning about various education requirements * Not yet rated Anonymous - 10 minutes later In the United States, there is a plethora of job opportunities available for nurses.
