The Spartan’s Story In Messina, football is not just a sport. Football is the town’s mayor, the town’s mascot, football is Messina. “On Friday nights, the entire town of Messina waited for the gate to open, then rushed to the bleachers where seats were claimed and nervous pre-game rituals were followed.” (2) Messina brought ginormous pressure down on the football program, and a diamond was formed. John Grisham weaves together a set of embedded stories to construct a beautiful tapestry of not only the town, not only the glorified coach, but of the legend shared by the Messina Spartans.

In the novel Bleachers, John Grisham effectively employs internal conflict to reveal how easy it is to be fooled by fake happiness. Neely Crenshaw’s life has gone anywhere but where he originally dreamed. “I don’t want to talk about football okay? I don’t want to hear about how great I was.” (71) Crenshaw has gone through tremendous suffering, and it is visible here that he has spent much of his life milling over his high-school self, yearning for the years where he was a God in Messina, the years where he was truly happy with himself. Through these years Neely had nothing to be conflicted by; he was winning all of his football games, the hottest girl in school was on his arm, and every D1 school in the state wanted him. Neely left Messina with a vow to never come back, on his way to Tech University, drawn by the “fifty thousand bucks in cash,” (28) and not by the true love for the game. After Crenshaw is injured, his life quickly turns bitter. Grisham uses this scenario to convey to us that material items, the fifty thousand Tech paid him, the five grand every week, the new car, are not going to bring us internal happiness, but instead they will only bring you temporary joy. The happiness will fade as the money does. The girl leaves when you stop winning. When Neely was injured and taken off the payroll, when his brand new car got surpassed by newer and better cars, when his model girlfriend dumped him, and he realized his only love was the one he left in Messina, Neely was left with nothing. Nothing but his Spartans.

Grisham effectively uses round characters to prove to us that a football team is so much more than a ‘team’, but a brotherhood. Eddie Rake drilled the Spartans day in and day out. He worked them like dogs, expecting nothing less than perfection, nothing less than victory. Nat Stewardson was called the Spartan’s worst punter, being compared to an “ungainly gazelle.” (89) Rake cussed Nat out every game for his errors, game-costing mistakes. We originally see Rake as cold, a coach focused strictly on victory with no care for his players at all. Nonetheless, when Nat becomes the first openly-gay coffee/book shop owner in Messina, the bond of the football team brings them together. We see a different side of Eddie Rake, as he rounds out to be empathetic and friendly, as he strives to open up to Nat. Rake begins to visit Nat every morning, and in exchange for Rake’s company Nat influences him to read detective fiction, a hit with Rake. The past Rake and Nat shared allowed them to come together and bond so easily, ignorant to the fact that they were both outcasts in their own way. Rake’s snub-nosed, hold nothing back personality didn’t hold Nat back from befriending Rake, like it had for the rest of Messina. Rake knew Nat very well before he opened up, Rake had not been afraid to tear a strip out of Stewardson before on the football field, so Rake had no fear of offending Nat and his sexuality, even though any Messinite had been immobilized by the thought of saying something they should not.

The brotherhood of the Spartans reached far beyond the sidelines of the football field, and even further past the open doors of Nat’s coffee/bookshop, the love Spartans shared for each other reached as far as Mal Brown’s police cruiser could go. When Mal would lock up anyone who played for Eddie Rake, they got a special treatment; old Spartans would play a card game with the Sherriff, where Mal would reminisce, showing that a football team is a memory that sticks with you forever, the joy of playing with your brothers and then being able to share it years later. The prisoner would receive weekend passes, a better cell, showing that for this brotherhood, becoming a Spartan gave you near immunity.

Grisham does a great job of using embedded stories and the passage of time to show that in order to enjoy the future, closure is a necessity. Throughout Bleachers, many stories of the past, most involving conflict, are told by the characters. Neely is at the heart of many of these conflicts, but the main conflict in focus is the one between him and Eddie Rake, the conflict that made him go against the amount of times he’d “sworn to never come back” (6) After Neely was assaulted by Rake, he felt nothing but hatred for Eddie. Ultimately though, it is shown that unsolved conflicts came back to haunt Neely. He came back to Messina against all odds, he went to the one place he swore to steer away from for the rest of his life, because he subconsciously needed closure with Rake. These feelings were obviously subconscious, as Neely had plenty of time to physically go and talk it out. But the closure came when Neely gave his eulogy at Rakes funeral; it came through the final goodbye. When Neely had no option but to speak positively towards Rake, he realized that he forgave his coach. That he sympathized with his coach in the way that after Neely had time to mill over his mistakes, he could accept that Rake was only human, and he too made mistakes. On the other hand, Neely had yet another conflict he could not run away from. Cameron. The girl Neely dumped to make room for his new cheerleader girlfriend. When Crenshaw lost his chance of a football career, he lost his girlfriend. Now that he is back in town, and he sees that Cameron is too; there is no way Neely can live the rest of his life without at least talking to her. Neely makes a very weak attempt at conversation, doing nothing but prodding Cameron on to go up one side of him and down the other. Neely let’s her leave after the onslaught is finished, and he is content with how the conversation went. This proves that Neely needed nothing but to have one more conversation, to get one more chance to let Cameron know he is sorry deep down, and to reach closure.

Especially in a town like Messina, where in the town’s finest diner “the walls were covered with old football schedules, framed newspaper stories, pennants and autographed jerseys,” (63) the Spartans formed a family. Through the elements of fiction, Grisham walks us through the victories and failures of the Messina Spartans, a program praised by its fans, and through this we are shown that there are much more meaningful victories in life than the ones you win on a football field.

...have been able to improve on those things. The improvements came about from the different type of essays that we had to write and it brought a whole lot of strengths from it. Although in the past years we have learned on how to write a lot of these papers this year we dove a little more into them. We took different approaches to them to get more out of them than we had before, such as the personal narrative. I have written a personal narrative in the past but this time it helped me improve because i could not just be basic. I learned that i would have to write more in detail for it be a quality paper, that i couldn’t just get away with writing it like a 9th grader any more. The improvement was just as small as having to do with the intro and getting better with my attention getters. It benefitted me because we have to write intos in all of our papers and if you write an intro that can’t grab the attention, no one...

Intro to Psychology Paper

...While there are many behaviors in my life that I am not particularly thrilled with, there was one I want to change right now. So I decided to chose it for this paper. The behavior I want to change is biting my nails There are lots of reasons to stop biting my nails, but even knowing these reasons to stop it can be hard. Some of the main reasons I want to change are because my hands will look a lot better if I do not have jagged, short, obviously bitten nails. Biting nails can be painful too. Imagine that feeling when you pull a hangnail, except it is all across your nail. It sucks, especially when the nail is already short. After I graduate from Grand Canyon I plan to go straight into business, specifically communications. In the business world appearances are of the utmost importance, chewed and ugly nails would be unacceptable. Finally the biggest reason for me personally is the fact that girls notice bitten nails. I know girls who say one of the things they look at first is nail care on a guy. Being a teenage male, I do not want to jeopardize any chance that I might potentially have with a girl. Now that I have chosen a habit and listed some reasons to change, I need to look at what some of the triggers might be. I spent a lot of time thinking about what these could be and the ones I came up with were mostly along the same lines. I tend to chew my nails when I find myself in stressful situations. Math has always been a stressful subject for me and I find that when I...

Intro Italy Paper

...Discussion Board Forum 1 Located at the southernmost region of Europe, Italy is my chosen country of study for the Global Business Cultural Analysis research paper. With Rome as its capital, this fascinating Republic is full of rich history and Christian heritage. Lead by a Prime Minister, Italy boast being the seventh largest economy in the world (Thomas White International, 2013). The Italian peninsula is rich in the diversity of business, including world renowned automotive companies, fashion, textiles, tourism, and of course, the bounty of gastronomical wonders. Unfortunately, and adding to the flavor of this country, is the stronghold of corruption and organized crime that ultimately affects its own citizens and the further growth of their economy. Corruption has reached even as high as the Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, who “has since been convicted of tax fraud, banned from public office for two years, and handed a one-year sentence.” (Cohen, 2013). I would like to study and learn about their local and international financial system, and discover why such a blessed country has such high unemployment rates among its citizens. I would also like to research their business culture, the types of corruption within the Government, their financial potential for improvement, and how international companies view investing in this interesting and diverse economy. Despite many negative factors, Italy continues to be the romantic capital of the world, full of dreamy landscapes...

I’m glad that they have a class called Intro To Mass cause it kind of helps u find out if u are in the right major or not. It introduces u Intro Mass Communication and gives you information on what this major is going to be about. I learned a lot in chapters 1,5, and 6. In chapter one I learned a lot about digital natives, digital immigrants, and mass media. Digital natives are people who grew up in a world where digital technologies and the Internet were already in place. Then you have your digital immigrants who are transitioning into the digital age. I thought that was pretty cool how they had two different groups, and mass media is the exchange of information and meanings between individuals and groups. In chapter 5 I learned about sound recording, speakeasies, and commercial radio. Sound recording is the recreation of sound waves including voice, music, and sound effects. A man by the name of Thomas Alva Edison is the one who created sound recording. Then I learned about speakeasies, which are illegal saloons and dance halls that quickly sprang up all over the country. After that came the commercial radio which is advertising backed radio that helped to increase the radio's financial base. Chapter 5 helped me a lot cause this chapter focused on my career so I learned a lot. In chapter 6 I learned about hybrid films, sound-on-filming technology, and...

Ancient Chinese Contributions

...first water powered blast furnace, gunpowder, medicine, paper money and certificates of deposit, printing, helicopter rotor and propeller, etc. Among, undoubtedly, many inventions, four stand out above others that I believe and nominate for are: (1) Iron technology (cast iron), (2) papermaking/currency, (3) guns and gunpowder, (4) medicine, all of which are still utilized by modern humanity. The first nominate greatest Chinese invention is the development of iron and steel. The development of iron and steel led to other advance. In the 5th century BC during the Zho Dynasty (1122-256BC), the Chinese had developed the blast furnace to obtain cast iron from iron ore. The Chinese had access to large amount of clay; clay was the most important ingredient in making blast furnace. The Chinese also figured out that by adding a substance the called “black earth” they could lower the melting point of iron; today iron and steel are used in many things from cars to buildings. The second nominate and the most important Chinese contributions to the modern world are papermaking. The earliest known piece of paper with writing on it was discovered near the 2nd century B.C, some say about 150 B.C. Although it is recorded that the Han Dynasty (202 BC –AD 220) court eunuch Cai Lun (b.c. 50-AD 121) invented the pulp papermaking process and established the use of new raw materials used in making paper, ancient padding and wrapping paper artifacts dating to the 2nd century BC have been found in...

...writing. In fact, the three universities that I have attended in the past have all required me to use the APA style of writing. As I recall my high school years, the APA style of writing also seemed to be a favorite amongst my high school teachers. They all required that term papers be written in APA style as well. This type of writing actually does not differ much from the ones included in the text reading. The text mentioned the APA style of writing several times. In my opinion, it appears to be the most popular style of writing, especially amongst college students. Based on the results of the quizzes, my grammar skills were actually a little better than average. I actually had expected to do better, but I guess my grammar skills are not as good as I thought they were. In any event I feel very confident when it comes to spelling, as I have always been a great speller. Even in grade school, I was a good speller. I learned at a very young age to challenge myself when it comes to spelling. Challenging my-self in that area really paid off as I became older, as I’ve never had a problem with spelling. However, I feel that I need more help with run on sentences and with thought patterns. Though I proof read my paper several times, it’s hard for me to see that I have several run on sentences until after I get my grade back. In general, I feel that my writing is just mediocre. However, I also believe that when it comes to writing, I am my own worst critic. Reason being, I am never...

How to Write a Good Academic Paper?

...How to Write a Good Academic Paper? That is a question which most students ask and most of them are new to academic writing. Academic writing if taken as a whole, then it would help you figure its significance and what is more important is, it would help you understand the purpose of it. Any good academic writer’s quality is his/her mind is loaded with creative set of ideas that help him navigate through the whole topic of academic paper. Ideas lead you to somewhere and only a few good students are gifted by nature and if you are not then you can also build up a good rhythm of academic writing. Secondly, you should also have a good sense of your audience; you should know what element of your academic writing would entice them and also create some space for your write-up for reading in their schedule. You then research for resources and data that would be of great use to enlighten your readers. Knowing what you audience wants, should be in your priority because readers enjoy what they seek in your writing. Usually what they look out for is something that could either bring them a smile or get them to think over the subject. Having creative ideas doesn’t guarantee a good and well-researched academic writing. You need to able to figure out ways of putting your research in a proper format so that readers don’t feel deviated from the focal point of your write-up. You should use your sources with proper attentiveness else it would completely ruin your efforts from top to bottom....
