Over the past several decades, the TESOL community in general has seen an increase in the interest in the use of data-driven learning approaches. Most of these have focused on the acquisition of vocabulary items, including a wide range of information necessary for their correct usage. One type of vocabulary that has been investigated has been that used mostly in academic writing. However, there has been little empirical study into the acquisition and use of two types of vocabulary common in academic writing, linking adverbials and reporting verbs. In addition, most studies into data-driven learning and academic vocabulary acquisition have assumed that the acquisition of this vocabulary will automatically lead to better academic writing. However, there have been no studies which have confirmed these assumptions. This study will attempt to fill these gaps in the literature. It investigates the acquisition of linking adverbials and reporting verbs, two sets of vocabulary that are difficult for ESL writers to master, with the use of data-driven learning techniques. In addition to looking at the acquisition of this vocabulary specifically, this study investigates whether these approaches also contribute to students’ progress in their academic writing. Results indicate that data-driven learning techniques do in fact help students acquire and better employ linking adverbials in their writing, although they do not help in the case of reporting verbs. No correlations to increases in student essay scores were found. However, this study still shows the possible value of data-driven learning approaches to students’ academic

...friends. They may also feel they lack the ability to fully express themselves through their native language. As teachers we need to take extra time and effort to understand that these students originate from diverse backgrounds, and some ELL students will have the learning skills that will enable them to pick up the English language at a more rapid pace than others. The reason for this seldom coincides with the student’s intelligence or motivation levels. Instead, we need to consider all the various learning strategies that can potentially help shape ELLs in becoming more confident in learning and speaking English. Throughout this assignment, I will thoroughly identify the different strategies that are presented throughout the classroom scenario, explain whether or not they are effective, describe how instructional input and scaffolding are used to support ELLs, discuss current theories and research in ELL development, identify and describe a standard, identify and explain several standards-based interventions or activities, and describe how I used fundamental theories of ELL instruction that help support my overall thinking. After reading the scenario, I determined that group solutions, paired summarizing, implementing writing...

...1.1 Analyse how types of assessment are used in lifelong learning Assessments should be a regular process; it might not always be formalised, but you should be observing what your students are doing, asking questions and reviewing their progress throughout their time with you (Gravells 2012). It Is a way of finding out if learning has taken place .It enables to ascertain whether the student has gained the required skills, knowledge and attitudes needed at a given point towards their programme of learning. This knowledge can be used with confidence to guide leadership practice, policy, and research. It also can provide a good starting point for dialogue with diverse audience about the future of educational leadership. Like other complex human activities, leadership is difficult to pin down. It might even be unwise to narrow it unnecessary. Nonetheless, a working definition can provide a useful frame of reference. ...implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared and supported by the school community. The effective administrator: 1.1 Uses research about best professional practice. Cooperative Learning       "Cooperative learning is the instructional use of small groups so that students         work together to maximize their own and each other's learning." WHAT IS IT? Cooperative learning is a successful teaching strategy in which small teams, each with students of different levels of ability, use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject. Each member of a team is responsible not only for learning what is taught but also for helping teammates learn, thus creating an atmosphere of achievement. WHY USE IT? Documented results include improved academic achievement, improved behavior and attendance, increased self-confidence and motivation, and increased liking of school and classmates. Cooperative learning is also relatively easy to implement and is inexpensive. HOW DOES IT WORK? Here are some typical strategies that can be used with any subject, in almost any grade, and without a special curriculum: Group Investigations are structured to emphasize higher-order thinking skills such as analysis and evaluation. Students work to produce a group project, which they may have a hand in selecting. STAD (Student Teams-Achievement Divisions) is used in grades 2-12. Although my family moved to the US before I entered high school, I have always kept my eyes turned north, especially in recent years as I began to read journal articles about research conducted on John Evans Glacier, located about 80° N latitude. Graduating next semester with a B.S. in computer science and engineering and a minor in geographic information systems, I am interested in attending the University of Alberta for graduate study. Geographic information systems (GIS) is a field especially suited to investigating spatial patterns, modeling diverse scenarios, and overlaying spatial data. This semester, in my advanced GIS course, Spatial Data Structures and Algorithms, I am part of a team developing a temporal database and program for tracing historical trading data. My computer science skills have also been put to use in two summer internship projects, where I acquired proficiency with using LIDAR (light detection and ranging) technology, now favored by NASA in its current 10-year study of Greenland and changes in the ice cap extent. Through my coursework and project experience, I have also accrued skills...

Critical Review

...Minh City Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature A critical review on an article: STUDENTS’ L1 USE: A STUMBLING BLOCK OR A FACILITATOR IN L2 LEARNING (Yukie Saito, Temple University Japan) Instructor: Nguyen Thi Kieu Thu, Ph.D. Student: Huynh Tran Vuong Chan Class: MA in TESOL 2014A HCMC, 04/2015 INTRODUCTION The development of English has been so dramatic over the past centuries, especially in countries where English is treated as a second language. It is undeniable that for those countries, the chances for students to be exposed to English are limited due to both objective and subjective conditions. The biggest obstacle is mostly counted on L1 intervention and its long standing impact on L2 learning. Therefore, in order to increase these chances, some schools, institutions and even universities have applied the English only policy in English classes for the better learning. And Japan is one these countries. Being interested in the application of this policy and driven by the controversial issue of L1 impact on L2 learning, Yukie Saito, a lecturer at Rikkyo University, has conducted a study on this problem which is later posted on a website for academic teaching and learning: Journal of Second Language Teaching and Research. Yukie’s study on “Students’ L1 use: A stumbling block or a facilitator in L2 learning” is conducted in the situation in which Japan is strictly applying the English-only policy institutionally. As a lecturer who concerns with language policy...
