E-book development prospect in Hong Kong

INTRODUCTION

Nowadays, the majority of Hong Kong people use E-book in their daily life. However, why the people and the society need the E-book?

In the report, I will introduce different information about E-book, including the background of E-book development, the trends of E-book in global and HK, the pros and cons of using E-book, what do Hong Kong people think about E-book and also some methods to promote E-book in the future

DEFINITION

what is E-book?

E

-book[1], which is called electronic book, is a book-length publication in digital form. It also includes text, images, or both and readable on electronic devices. The most common are personal computers and smartphone.

E-BOOK’ S HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT

[pic]

Figure 1 The history and development of E-book

Figure 1 can show that the first generation of E-book is in 1990 to 1998. In that day, there was only one publisher in the society and the E-book was controlled by keyboard. The content in the E-book just included text and it can only save on the hard disc or CD. The function of E-book was for education only.

The second generation of E-book was in 1999 to 2006. In that day, E-book can be controlled by using mouse and there was more than one publisher in the society. The content also can be saved on the internet and it was not only included text, but also added some sound and picture in it. The function was changed to reading book.

The third or latest generation of E-book was begun. The E-book can use in computer, mobile phone and some electronic devices. It can use fingers to control and added some cartoon and video in it. The function was changed to life enjoy.

THE TREND OF E-BOOK

IN GLOBAL

The first E-book library was opened in USA on Jan, 2013. According to USA survey, the number of people having laptop from 16% in 2011 is increased to 33% in 2012. In addition, the E-book market shares keep increasing too. The main reason of this phenomenon is the development of technology level all over the world. Therefore, we can see that the market of E-book is become bigger and bigger in the world.

IN HONG KONG

HK government is developing the e-book market especially in the recent years. Take schools as an example, the government set up some wi-fi in school, develop e-school bag and provides some learning website to the students. The government also hopes that students can learn effectively. In the society, the smart-phone users also keep increasing, it leads to the development of E-book too.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF USING E-BOOK

ADVANTAGES

There are six main advantages of using E-books.

1. It can control the increasing price of the test books

- The price of test book keeps increasing because of the inflation. E-book is the substitute of test book. When parents use E-book to replace test books, the demand of test books will decrease and it will make the price of test books decrease too.

2. Using E-book is more convenience

- Because the people can read book and find information everywhere and every time. And also it is time saving because it can save the time of finding books in the library.

3. More attractive for the kids.

- Because E-book includes more images, games and videos. The colorful pictures and cartoons can make the kids to be more interested in the study.

4. Reduce the weight of school bag.

- The students only need to bring the E-book because all test books including different subjects were saved in the E-book already. When they do not need to bring different test books to the school, it will improve children’s health.

5. Can update the information anytime.

- Because the text-books may just have some old information and data.

6. Environmental friendly

- According to the Mainland china survey, using E-book can save 33 million tones paper per year. So that it not only can reduce the pollution, but also benefit to the long-term economy.

DISADVANTAGES

There are four main disadvantages of using E-books:

1. Affect users’ vision and eyes’ health.

- Because they need to watch on the screen for a long time. If they do not have enough rest, it will hurt their eyes easily.

2. It may affect students’ writing ability.

- The students may rely on the E-book, for example only typing on the e-book and print out.

3. Some family unable to bear the price of e-books

- One notebook or E-book around $3000-$5000. Some poor family cannot afford it, if without any subsidy.

4. Some parents think it cannot solve the problem of increase price in text-book

THE METHODS OF PROMOTE E-BOOK IN THE FUTURE

There are three promotion methods:

1. Promotion

– Advertisements and some promotion events in school or office. It can solve the public’s misunderstanding on E-book. And it can change their mind to E-book is not only for entertainment, but also learning.

2. Governmental support

– Government can provide some grants to the poor family and also can provide the education or training in the schools.

3. Information explaining

– The school or government can provide more information to different parties in the society e.g. how can benefit from e-book, how can use E-book probably and how can avoid the bad effects of using this.

DATA COLLECTION METHOD

I use several methods to collect the data about the topic:

COMMON SEARCH ENGINES

The use of search engines is convenient and time saving. These two engines also is the most frequent method I use in daily life especially collecting data and finding information.

Influence of Music to Language Learners

...The Effect of Music on Second Language Vocabulary Acquisition This Document Originally Appeared in NATIONAL NETWORK FOR EARLY LANGUAGE LEARNING Volume 6, Number 3 Spring 1993 Suzanne L. Medina, Ph.D. School of Education Graduate Education Department California State University, Dominguez Hills 1000 East Victoria Street Carson, CA 90747 Fax: (310) 514-0396 E-mail: smedina@forefrontpublishers.com It is currently a common practice to use songs in the classroom to support second language acquisition. The literature abounds with positive statements concerning music as a vehicle for first and second language acquisition. At the same time, empirical support for music as a vehicle for second language acquisition is lacking and there is concern that music may be simply a supplemental activity with little instructional value. In this study, the effect of music on the acquisition of English vocabulary in a group of second grade limited-English proficient children is reported. Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition In recent years, second language researchers have concerned themselves with the acquisition of vocabulary and have distinguished between vocabulary that is acquired incidentally and vocabulary that is acquired intentionally. During the preschool years, children rely exclusively on the oral language they listen to in order to acquire their first language. This acquisition of language takes place before children can read and without explicit instruction of any...

Why is the new grid computing system at Advance America much easier to install, manage, and maintain than its old system? In the older system of Advance America each of the centers had their own software and hardware installed in their premises, and every night all the centers around the country you to send their data to the main hub. Because of the growing numbers of the data and the centers around the country there was not enough time for all the data to be transferred to the main system plus the maintenance cost of the older system was much higher. In the new system Advance America switched to grid computing. “Grid computing is the collection of computer resources from multiple locations to reach a common goal.”{1} They installed a Client machine in every center which connects to the Web from a fault-tolerant server running Oracle database software. Banana Used as Fertilizer

...THE EFFECTIVENESS BANANA (MUSA X PARADISIACA) PEELS USED AS FERTILIZER APPLIED IN DIFFERENT KINDS OF PLANTS SAMPLES RESEARCHER: BERLENE GAIL H. LAMA CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Background of the study A banana peel, known as a banana skin in British English, is the outer covering of the banana fruit. As bananas, whether eaten raw or cooked, are a popular fruit consumed worldwide, with yearly production over 145 million tonnes in 2011, there is a significant amount of banana peel waste being generated as well. Banana peels are used as feedstock as they have some nutritional value. Banana peels are widely used for that purpose on small farms in regions where bananas are grown. There are some concerns over the impact of tannins contained in the peels on animals that consume them.[3][4] Banana peels are used as feedstock for cattle, goats, pigs, poultry, rabbits, fish and several other species. The specific nutrition contained in peel depends on the stage of maturity and the cultivar; for example plantain peels contain less fibre than dessert banana peels, and lignin content increases with ripening (from 7 to 15% dry matter). On average, banana peels contain 6-9% dry matter of protein and 20-30% fibre (measured as NDF). Green plantain peels contain 40% starch that is transformed into sugars after ripening. Green banana peels contain much less starch (about 15%) when green while ripe banana peels contain up to 30% free sugars. Banana peels are also used for water purification...
