Job Discrimination among minorities in the US

Many establishments today pride themselves on welcoming all communities, cultures and backgrounds to their businesses as a way of showing non- discrimination or prejudice to customers and potential workers. However, we see instances of discrimination on the news amongst our minority celebrities who have been mistreated on the account of the color of their skin. For example, Oprah Winfrey well known African American TV mogul reported to entertainment tonight that she was discriminated against just last year when she tried to buy an expensive purse at a store and was denied by the teller who stated that the purse was too expensive and that she should choose another less expensive purse. Also, in 1994, the well-known restaurant chain, Denny’s, were sued in race bias suits for 54 million dollars to customers that were discriminated against while dining at their restaurant. Some customers complained that they were made to pay higher prices for food than white customers and in some cases minority customers were treated rudely. The same discrimination can be seen in the workplace today and could be the reason for high unemployment in the US among young minorities. The unemployment rate among young minorities in the US is higher than those of white Americans. As you walk into establishments from as early as the 1960’s to the post Great Recession more white employees than minority employees will be seen in the work force. I believe that the Great Recession has made impact on many workers in the US but studies will show that minorities will suffer two times more than their white counterparts. According to an article, “Black unemployment rate is consistently twice that of whites” written by Drew DeSilver states, “The unemployment rate among blacks is about double that

...DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE? Exodus 3:9-14 9 And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. 10 So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt." 11 But Moses said to God, "Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?" 12 And God said, "I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain." 13 Moses said to God, "Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, 'What is his name?' Then what shall I tell them?" 14 God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.' " Hmm. I have to be honest. As I rested my spirit on these verses, the lord asked me this question “do you know who I am?” I said “yes lord” I have to be honest, at that point nothing came to my spirit. this has been one of those weeks where I've had a hard time resting my spirit to hear from the Lord.... but I am pretty sure I know who my lord is... I said again "yes Lord" The Lord asked me again… “do you know who I am? I said…. “yes Lord” Again… know further response to the Lord. Theaetetus

...DIALOGUE: SOCRATES; THEODORUS; THEAETETUS Euclid and Terpsion meet in front of Euclid's house in Megara; they enter the house, and the dialogue is read to them by a servant. Euclid. Have you only just arrived from the country, Terpsion? Terpsion. No, I came some time ago: and I have been in the Agora looking for you, and wondering that I could not find you. Euc. But I was not in the city. Terp. Where then? Euc. As I was going down to the harbour, I met Theaetetus-he was being carried up to Athens from the army at Corinth. Terp. Was he alive or dead? Euc. He was scarcely alive, for he has been badly wounded; but he was suffering even more from the sickness which has broken out in the army. Terp. The dysentery, you mean? Euc. Yes. Terp. Alas! what a loss he will be! Euc. Yes, Terpsion, he is a noble fellow; only to-day I heard some people highly praising his behaviour in this very battle. Terp. No wonder; I should rather be surprised at hearing anything else of him. But why did he go on, instead of stopping at Megara? Euc. He wanted to get home: although I entreated and advised him to remain he would not listen to me; so I set him on his way, and turned back, and then I remembered what Socrates had said of him, and thought how remarkably this, like all his predictions, had been fulfilled. I believe that he had seen him a little before his own death, when Theaetetus was a youth, and he had a memorable conversation with him, which he...

On the Night of Your Birth

...On the Night You Were Born II Kings 17:6-14 and Luke 15:17-24 Rev. Dr. Zina Jacque August 29, 2010 Beloved of God, do you know, have you ever wondered what happened on the night you were born. My family story holds that somewhere around the end of August in 1956 Dr. E.L.C. Broomes told my Mother not to get her hopes too high. After all, this was her fifth pregnancy, and though she had finally moved beyond the 30 week mark, she still had many weeks to go and she should not get her hopes too high. There was no guarantee this baby would make it. But then, on the evening of October 30th, sometime after dinner, something within my mother moved, something within her said, it is time and all the world stood still for my parents, all of the world held its breath. I do not know what thoughts ran through my mother’s mind or my father’s heart in those hours before I was born; but I know once I had arrived, once they held me in their arms, they began to rejoice. Nancy Tillman, in her book On the Night You Were Born, gives voice to the rhythm of words that might have been spoken on night you and I were born:1 On the night you were born the moon smiled with wonder. The stars peeked in to see you, all safe and tucked under And the night wind whispered and called you by name And said with a sigh, life will never be the same So enchanted with you were the wind and the rain They too whispered the sound of your wonderful name. Your name sailed past houses, high on the breeze Over oceans and mountains...

Soulmates

...find your other half. You will not know who your other half is until you have time away from your other half. In my opinion, your other half is found after a long time away from each other. You must accept, know and love yourself before another can accept, know and love you. When you are in love with your other half it’s not all about the love, it’s about being with them and trying to do as much for each other as you can. Helping others and doing things together to benefit not only you two, but the world. I believe that you can feel when you are with your soulmate. You feel it from within and you can feel a change in the way your surrounds seem. Knowing who your soulmate is takes time. I believe that everyone has a soulmate and that we must not look for our soulmate, but wait. Waiting around and living life while waiting are two different things. Kierkegaard knows that soulmates are bound for somewhere after life. Kierkegaard believes that they will be joined with God. If the two souls were split in Heaven then they will be reunited on their way back to Heaven. Kierkegaard knows the delicate process of soulmates finding each other and joining. When soulmates are found it is often like a miracle-Kierkegaard describes the joining of two souls as a mystical, romantic experience from within. Whether you believe in God or not it doesn’t matter when it comes to blending with your soulmate. As long as you are aware of who you are the power of the love, you two are bound together...

Being in a new place with new people, new faces it is hard to fit in. And this especially when the others know each other already. And they'll start tailing me. And I don't mind. I realize some people want to see if you're real. The teenagers, the little kids, their faces light up. They say, "Gee," and they can't wait to tell their friends. And old people come up and say, "Wait till I tell my wife." You've changed their whole day. In the morning, the garbage men that go by 57th Street when I come out the door say, "Marilyn, hi! How do you feel this morning?" To me, it's an honor, and I love them for it. The working men, I'll go by and they'll whistle. At first they whistle because they think, oh, it's a girl. ...set before us on our mortal journey. All of us are blessed with responsibility for others. To hold the priesthood of God is to be held responsible by God for the eternal lives of His children. That is real, that is wonderful, and at times that can feel overwhelming. There are elders quorum presidents listening tonight who know what I mean. Here is what happened to one of you. It has likely happened to many of you—and more than once. The details may vary, but the situation is the same. An elder you do not know well asked for your help. He had just found out that he had to move his wife and young baby boy today from the apartment where they have been living to another one nearby. He and his wife had already asked a friend if they could borrow a truck for the day to move their household and personal belongings. The friend loaned them the truck. The young father began to load all they owned into the truck, but in the first few minutes, he hurt his back. The friend who loaned the truck was too busy to help. The young father felt desperate. He thought of you, his elders quorum president. By the time he asked for help, it was early afternoon. It was the day of an evening Church meeting. You had already promised to help your wife with household projects that day. Your children had asked you to do something with them, but you hadn’t gotten to it yet. You also knew that the members of your quorum, particularly the most faithful, the ones you usually called on to help, were likely...

OBAMA:  Yeah?  Exciting?  It’s good.         Well, I want to start by thanking Vice Chancellor Price for, number one, that very kind introduction and for his words, but more importantly for all the work that he’s doing at this phenomenal university.         I also want to send greetings and say hello and thank you to Dr. Ramphele.  She is fabulous.  (Laughter.)  We got to talk outside.  We could have been talking for hours, but we’ll do that later.  (Laughter.)  But I am grateful to have her join us today and more importantly for her lifetime of leadership and sacrifice for this country.  She is a true model.  Her generation is the generation that we all will be standing -- whose shoulders we will stand on.  So I am excited to have her talk to all of you.         But before I begin, I want to recognize yesterday’s passing of Kader Asmal, and I want everyone here to know that the thoughts and prayers of my family and my country are with all of you as you mourn another of this nation’s great anti-apartheid leaders.           As I just said, his generation fought its battles so that today’s young people, all of you, no matter where you come from or what you look like, could have the opportunities to shape your own futures and the futures of this country and this world.         And that's why I like to talk with all of you young people, and that's what I want to talk with you about...
