It’s Personal! A Look At Privacy In The 21st Century
There is no doubt that there is a lack of privacy in the 21st century, but is it our choice? How much is under the control of our own actions and how much is implemented by the government? Surely there is good that comes from having an “invisible” eye watching and recording certain daily actions, but are we more susceptible to threats because some of our privacy is literally stripped from us? I never got a choice if I wanted google earth to take a picture of my house to display to the world, or my name and family history to be available to anyone that googled it. Criminals are off the street because of cameras, terrorists are being tracked by computer, and it sure is nice to find old friends by looking online. The 21st century has introduced us to new technology that makes our lives a little easier however, privacy seems to diminish with every click of a mouse. Perhaps we can argue that the use of advanced technology is threatening our fourth amendment rights.
Privacy is a concept that has been interpreted in many different ways. “In the United States, the concept of privacy has evolved since it was first articulated by Justice Brandeis in 1898. His definition of privacy-"The right to be let alone" (as cited by Berman & Bruening, 2001, Para 6)- has been influential for nearly a century (Berman & Bruening, 2001). This definition seems to give a good definition of what we would like privacy to be. For centuries, even before the internet the government has had secret ways of following individuals that may be a threat based on groups they were a part of, religion, and political expression. It was brought to the attention of Christopher Pyle, a professor at Mount Holyoke College while he was teaching in the Army in 1967. He focused on teaching law at the Army’s intelligence school, showing maps, configurations of parks, etc… One day he was approached by an officer with more information than he could believe. The officer showed him what they called the “black list”, which held reports of some fifteen hundred Army operatives about demonstrations of twenty people or more. Pyle realized that they were creating files on millions of Americans engaged in completely lawful activities. In 1970 he wrote an article that brought so much attention and scrutiny to the U.S. Army intelligence agency that they shut down domestic surveillance. This would result on other agencies being watched and soon a series of laws aimed at curbing government abuses were implemented (Robert O' Harrow, 2005).
The Privacy Act of 1974 gave some privacy rights back to the people. The Privacy Act allowed people to know what the government was collecting and sharing about them. Some felt that this law along with others put up too much of a wall between law enforcement and criminals. Unfortunately, the acts of September 11th would not only loosen those laws but change our right to privacy completely. Congress enacted the USA Patriot Act in 2001, this allowed for law enforcement and FBI agencies to use information that was already available to follow terrorist activity, drug trafficking and criminal activity any way possible (www.justice.gov). The government was now able to ask employers to provide them with employee e-mail information. In attempt to catch criminals and terrorists, cameras were placed on streets, in shopping malls, and even embedded in products and clothing. The public was unaware of where and what was being monitored, nowadays it’s a better assumption that you “are” being watched rather than “if”. Names were run through a data base for any type of activity that could be a potential threat. Most Americans were more than willing to give up some amount of privacy in trade for more security. However, no one knew the outcome and trials it would put millions through as a result.
We have all heard of the “no fly list”, a list documented by the government of people that are on a watch list for terrorism or criminal activity. A name would be put into a database when someone wanted to fly, if it came up on the no fly list, they were excluded from flight. This seemed to be a good idea however, many Americans were targeted because of having a similar name of someone that is a threat, past charges, or even due to identity theft. Voters were turned away in the 2000 election because of inappropriate accusations and untrue information provided to the government. It took years for most people to clear their name from the list, but they still lost their right to vote, which is a right that was fought for. It seems that instead of targeting the people that should be being watched, we became a society of having to prove ourselves innocent without even knowing our guilt. There is a fine line between defending our country and targeting law abiding citizens. In a country of freedom and pride we of course want to be safe, but unfortunately it seems that some of the technology that is supposed to keep us safe has, at times, turned against us.
“The Fourth Amendment, originally intended to protect citizens from physical searches and seizures, establishes an expectation of privacy in communications as well. New technologies that enhance the ability of law enforcement to monitor communications and compile an array of information about an individual test the limits of Fourth Amendment protections and require that we revisit and redefine our established ideas about this constitutional protection” (Berman & Bruening, 2001). The argument exists that while giving law enforcement the ability to find out information on any individual may violate privacy, it also could and has kept us safe by keeping criminals off the street. As the above example shows, the problem is that some of the privacy we all feel is gone is not always being used for good. Perhaps a more innocent example; a lady at the mall fell into a fountain while texting, the tape was put on YouTube and shown to the world. A mistake that may have been funny and easy to get past, is now something she is recognized for. What about that red light you accidentally ran and so grateful no cop was around , well these days you get a ticket in the mail with your picture and a fine to pay. In both situations maybe there were lessons learned such as, not to walk and text or to run a red light. Ten years ago these things would not have been an issue and would have been brushed under the rug. This also brings up the subject of social networking and how things can be shared with others within moments, all by going online.
Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks have the ability to use any information, pictures or quotes that are posted on the web site. In the beginning of social networking we did not think of the issues and problems these specific sites could impose. Social networking became a fun and easy way to share our lives with family and friends. With the concern of privacy being taken away from us, it seems with social networking we are doing the exact opposite of trying to protect ourselves. By posting our everyday actions on Facebook, or even by participating in online surveys we open ourselves up to the world. With time we have become more and more relaxed about what we share with whomever has access to the internet. There have been numerous lawsuits, complaints and even lives that have been destroyed by social networks. Laws and legal sites have been created in some cases to protect the site itself, and even ways to make things “private” on your own page. The question is if privacy is such a concern wouldn’t posting family pictures, daily thoughts and even ones relationship status violate those concerns? What is our definition of privacy these days? Society seems to have an unbalanced idea of privacy and where the responsibility lies when it is violated.
Companies offer discounts to people that sign up as a member, or participate in online surveys. By doing so you are giving away information about household income, employment, family members, addresses, and phone numbers. “Many commercial Web sites carry privacy notices which are supposed to explain how customer information is used. But even if dotcoms claim they’d never sell user profiles based on cookies to unaffiliated third parties, what happens when that dotcom is bought by somebody else” (Mur, 2005). Great question, any information obtained could be used by anyone that has the ability to get their hands on it. Even if a site does have a privacy notice it does not guarantee that your information will remain forever safe. Society seems to be okay with giving out information that may help in the long run with a discount, or maybe even the social circle, but when it is used for something we did not intend it becomes a violation of the Fourth Amendment. “When the Veterans Administration lost a laptop with 26.5 million Social Security numbers on it, the agency felt the lash of righteous indignation from the public and law makers alike” (Sullivan, 2011). It almost seems impossible to find a healthy balance between privacy and technology use.
Technology has become a way of life in America, and as Americans we continue to accept anything that makes our lives a little easier. Navigation systems, smart phones, laptops, Skype, this list could go on and on. I enjoy these things myself, but it is a little scary to look at the reality of it all. Think about going to your favorite coffee place, or that place in the park you like to go study “alone”. Ever notice the little black boxes that may look like nothing at first glance, but you soon realize it is a camera. How about driving in your car that has GPS, every place you are driving past is being recorded, every moment. Smart phones have the same capabilities, by logging themselves into every cell tower just about every movement and phone call can be found. Have you ever purchased a pass on the BART in San Francisco with a credit card, or any transportation for that matter, well that is being recorded too. Many people may say that if they are not doing anything wrong, there is no reason to be concerned. If the invisible eye is doing us good and just keeping us safe, then in legal terms I would agree. However, what about the invisible eye that is no good at all? One of the voters turned away in 2000 was a salesman named Matthew Frost. As he stepped up to the toll booth to vote he was told “Sir, you have a felony and cannot vote today.” He stood embarrassed and confused asking her to check again, but was turned away. Frost found that he was added to the list of excluded voters because he had been the victim of identity theft. A man living in Taiwan used his name and was convicted of a felony in 1995 (Robert O' Harrow, 2005). Once he complained to officials, his identity was finally regained but he still lost his chance to vote. Identity theft has been around long before the internet was born, but if you think of each piece of your identity as a part of a puzzle you start to realize how much easier the internet has made it for people wanting to find information about others. I remember in the 90s my parents being nervous about mail fraud and news bulletins about people stealing mail from others in an attempt to gather information. Back then that was scary, but it would take more than just one bill or letter to know what a person does day to day. Now all it takes is information getting into the wrong hands, a couple google searches, and you watch your life and identity go down the drain. Information that is kept in computers and data that is saved in an unlimited file in cyberspace, may never become a problem. Knowing it could and is potentially out there forever, is a problem.
The amount of privacy we have as individuals will continue to diminish with the use of technology. It is getting to the point that no matter what age you are you cannot avoid being found online somewhere, somehow. In many ways we have to blame ourselves for trusting our lives to a computer screen. “Americans may be able to make a constitutional argument for our privacy, but our real lives show that we do not take our right to privacy very seriously” (Dezzutti, 2013, para.4). There will never be a perfect balance where everyone is completely happy, but by finding new ways to protect ourselves and implementing blocks on our information it may give us a chance, at least with some things in life, to “keep it personal”.

...Individual personal statement Over the course of the facilitation module I have learnt many things, whether it be through work in class, through my own wider reading or my own personal experiences being a participant. One thing that has become clear through my reading of Boal's games for actors and non-actors is that facilitation is a platform to allow anyone to experience drama. I found this very interesting as using facilitation in this way shows the positive ways in which drama can be used. I felt that this was an important idea, especially as the purpose of our workshop was to bring drama to an age group that might not have had a chance to experience it. Although our group was not on the same calibre as the groups that Boal's in the theatre of the oppressed it is still just as important for them to experience drama, “Even if they had all been homogeneous groups I feel that this introduction would have been necessary” (Boal,1992) this clearly shows that it is important that we use facilitation in this way. Although I missed a section of this module, due to health reasons, I feel that I have tried my best to put in an equal effort towards to outcome as my peers. I have tried to use my own experiences being a participant in workshops myself and also my experience being a facilitator at a local drama school to influence my decisions in the planning and development process. As I was working with children of a similar age, I felt that this influenced the way I worked in this...

Personal Responsibility

...Personal Responsibility and College Success Personal responsibility is something that can help an individual. I believe that if a person has the sense to be responsible in their everyday life, then being successful in college will be a breeze. To be successful, one has to make good choices to get good results. The choice I made was to attain my college degree. In order to pursue that goal, I need to be personally responsible for the work ahead and make it through any obstacles. Furthering ones education and personal responsibility have many things in common, especially if it helps that person get their priorities in order. Personal responsibility is accepting the actions chosen and the consequences from those actions. I take upon myself to set my personal responsibility as succeeding in college. Haskins (2009) wrote, “When applied to education, personal responsibility means that students accept the responsibility to study hard and to learn as much as they can in courses that press against the limits of their capacity.”. In other words, I am going to push myself until I can no longer push. Move forward, do not look back – only look at what the future holds. I want to set an example for my children that if you find the motivation that helps you be that better person, go for it. According to Ellis (2011), “Motivation can come simply from being clear about your goals and acting on them.” My personal motivations are to provide my children with a future that I can give...

Personal Credo

...Psychology Major Module 2: Assignment: Instructions and Grading Rubric DIRECTIONS: Personal Credo: Psychology is a science that pervades nearly every moment of every day of our lives. To provide just one small example, consider the complex psychological and physiological processes involved in forming thoughts, communicating with others, and remembering both happy and sad memories. The very manner in which you engage (or do not engage) with others in the world around you has been derived from a series of influences on you, both genetic and environmental, that have shaped you into the person you are today. Thus, we are the amalgamation of collective influences on us, from our families and friends to our coworkers and larger society. It is my firm conviction that to appreciate who we are and what we stand for, it is important to periodically self-reflect and consider our life experiences, those things important to us, and our current direction in life. To assist you in doing this, I will ask that each of you complete a “personal credo.” This term may be somewhat alien to you, so I will explain what materials are to be included in this brief summary of who you are. Submit your assignment via the Dropbox no later than Sunday 11:59 PM EST/EDT. (This Dropbox basket is linked to Turnitin.) The word “credo” relates to a personal set of values or beliefs. For this class, conceptualize your personal credo as a brief autobiographical statement that details not only important background...

...Running head: PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY Personal Responsibility Julie George GEN/200 June 25, 2012 Monique Mesa Personal Responsibility Although many people are involved, college success depends greatly on personal responsibility. The definition of personal is “of, pertaining to, or coming as from a particular individual” and responsible means “answerable or accountable, as for something within one’s power, control, or management (Dictionary.com, 2012).” As a result, personal responsibility is an individual being accountable for the things he or she can control. Learning different strategies for success will not only be responsible, it will set up a routine that can be used beyond my college career. What is done now affects the outcome of the experience and personal responsibility is accepting the results of those actions. These concepts do not only apply to college but will be valuable in the workplace. Strategies Often times, people begin college thinking it will be like high school. In some ways they are right, but college takes much more personal responsibility, especially when taking classes online. There is not a teacher constantly reminding you of the tasks you must complete, or to encourage you to get things done. It is the student’s obligation to stay involved in the class, and get their school work accomplished. Some strategies to stay on track may seem simple, but can be very beneficial. The first strategy is setting clear and definite goals before starting...

Personal Responsibility

...your own individual personal responsibility. How you deal with your own personal responsibility factors into each and every one of those decisions you make on a daily basis. Personal responsibility to me is, living and leading a successful lifestyle as an individual. When you learn to lead a successful lifestyle then you start to gain credibility to take on other responsibilities in life. Also, for the majority of time, how well you do with your own personal responsibility factors in on your college success. To obtain college success you need a certain maturity level. In today’s society, when you finish high school we go straight to college. If you have good enough grades, test scores to get into college doesn’t justify being able to live the lifestyle of a college student. Without being personally responsible it will be very difficult on your path for college success. After reading an article on a website by Brian Tracy, I took this quote pertaining to personal responsibility. “The acceptance of personal responsibility is what separates the adult from the child. It’s the great leap forward into maturity. Responsibility is the hallmark of the fully integrated, fully functioning human being.” (Tracy) This quote should be on the front of every college catalog. To me your opinion of that statement, will define you as a person. If you can’t accept personal responsibility then you will never progress past an adolescent’s maturity level. Personal Respsonsibility Cause and Effect

...because the words are so profoundly true. In the end we cannot blame anyone but ourselves for the way our life turns out. As I began writing this paper, I really had to think about how I felt about my own personal responsibility. I had to consider how my decisions affect those that are in my personal circle. Realizing the choices that I make now or in the future could have a paramount effect on my family and closes friends. Yes, I am responsible for how others view me and take into account the person that I have come to be. Being personally responsible means; being accountable for everything that happens in my life, including my actions, attitude and the decisions I make about such things as my health, how I handle myself on my job, being a good parent and being an excellent student. Personal responsibility also means that for every cause there is an effect, every action has a reaction. Is this reaction positive or negative? Well, that depends solely on how one handles the situation life throws your way. My true happiness depends on the degree to which I recognize and accept the consequences of my actions and realize that each action has a direct impact on whether I reach my goals, accomplish my dreams and make my life meaningful. I have recently decided to take personal responsibility for my life and finish what I started so many years ago. You never turn anything in on time, you don’t feed your cat, and you do not wash your socks. You would fail your class, your cat would be hungry, and you would stink. That life would be a chaotic one, so while it may seem difficult to learn personal responsibility, it is most important because the choices you make early in your education, influence your success in your academic career. Everyone needs clean socks, right? “Response-ability” Personal responsibility is simply a person’s “response-ability,” that is, the ability of a person to maturely respond to the various challenges and circumstances of life (Thomas, 2012). Look at it this way, if you are not willing to take personal responsibility, your giving up your opportunity for personal growth. Personal responsibility is also taking responsibility for your actions. In an article written by Ron Haskins, who is a senior researcher in economic studies, he stated “students accept the responsibility to study hard and to learn as much as they can in courses that press against the limits of their capacity” (Haskins, 2009). We as a student need to realize that we control what grades we make, what and how much information we take in, and how much time and effort we want to put into our academic careers. Personal Computer

...Personal computers are now a very common item in many houses yet in 1955, there were only 250 computers in use throughout the world. In 1980, more than one million personal computers had been sold and by the mid-1980’s, this figure had risen to 30 million. How did this come about? A computer in 1955 was very large and could not have fitted into a normal room in a normal sized house. They frequently burned out and had a tendency to attract moths into the system which short-circuited them. (Getting a computer ‘bug’ now refers back to the time when moths were a problem to the early computers). In the late 1950’s, computers got smaller because one of its main components - the valve - was replaced by the much smaller transistor. These made computers far more reliable and therefore businesses took a much greater interest in them. Firms such as IBM could sell a mainframe computer for just under £½ million pounds in today’s money. By the mid-1960’s, the microchip was replacing the transistor. A microchip could have several transistors on it. But being smaller, it lead again to a decrease in the size of computers. By 1965, there were 20,000 computers in the world. The most famous was the IBM System/360. The microchip also leads to computers being made that were small enough to get into the average sized room in a house. By 1970, one microchip could contain 1000 transistors on it. In 1970, a home personal computer would have cost nearly £70,000 in today’s money. In 1971, the microprocessor...

...Personal Responsibility with Time Gen200 Personal Responsibility Success in college today is a balancing act of time; without balance between the academic career and a personal life, one will sometimes falter. Most people attending college today have a personal responsibility to a family as well as an academic career. For a person to be successful in college the right balance in both academic and a personal life must be found. Devotion to one without the other can often lead to neglect. Personal responsibility is in knowing the commitment required to reach the goal. It is about accountability for the impact a commitment to goals has on others. This commitment is time. A person often believes success in life when being able to manage a balance between time devoted to both family and career. Success in a person’s career is by support and encouragement from the family. This support and encouragement is available provide the time spent in the career does not overtake the time spent with the family. I see the relationship between personal responsibility and college success defined by a person wants to achieve in college and to what point a person allows it to encompass life. The people around a person, such as teachers, advisors, and even family members can encourage success, but it is the individual who has to put forth the efforts to make time available to achieve his or her goal. In the 19th century, Charles Babbage invented the first computers. They were very big and they occupied a big space. The computers were not that efficient but technological advancement led to more and more researches be conducted in order to increase the efficiency and reliability of these computers. The evolution of the personal computers took place in three major stages where each stage is said to have had a positive improvement in terms of the performance and physical size of the computers. The stages were; First stage (1937-1946) - Clifford berry and John Atanasoff were the pioneers of first electronic digital computers. The computers had no any operating system and they used vacuum tubes for processing. They were so heavy and are believed to have produced a lot of heat. They almost weighed 30 tons and consumed a lot of power. Second stage (1947-1962) – at this stage, everything was perfectly improved. Vacuum tubes were replaced with transistors and this made the computers more reliable. Programming languages were also invented in this stage as well as memory storage media. The computers were used commercially. Third stage (1963- present) – it’s at this stage that the integrated circuits were invented which brought much impact on the...
