On the island some time ago, a group of boys were stranded with nothing remaining. On the island, the group decides to elect a leader, the boys select Ralph. Ralph leads the group with help from Piggy and a little from Jack. While time passes the group starts to split into two separate factions. This soon leads into a gruesome war. After death, savagery, and brutality, they soon get rescued.

Golding portrays Jack’s appetite for hunting pigs, dominance over the choir boys, and desire for absolute leadership to not only demonstrate the deterioration of the boys’ society, but also to depict the intimidation and fear that jack receives for the boys. At the beginning of the book Jack arrives to the survivors in command of his Choir. Jack then loses the election and then chooses his boys to become hunters. Along the book every move Jack takes, his hunters are always by his side. “Ralph, I’ll split up the choir–my hunters, that is–into groups, and we’ll be responsible for keeping the fire going–” (56). In this quote Golding expresses Jack’s personality at the beginning of the book through his generosity, but he also hints at what type of kid Jack is. When Jack wants his Choir to become hunters, he also says he will keep the fire going, but he doesn't. Even Jack himself is set up on the mountain and leaves the fire to go out.
