James Joseph Brown[1] (May 3, 1933 – December 25, 2006) was an American singer and dancer. The founding father of funk music and a major figure of 20th-century popular music and dance, he is often referred to as "The Godfather of Soul". In a career that spanned six decades, Brown influenced the development of several music genres.[2]
Brown began his career as a gospel singer in Toccoa, Georgia. Joining an R&B vocal group called the Avons that later evolved to become The Famous Flames, Brown served as the group's lead singer.[3][4] First coming to national public attention in the late 1950s as a member of The Flames with the hit ballads "Please, Please, Please" and "Try Me", Brown built a reputation as a tireless live performer with the Famous Flames and his backing band, sometimes known as the James Brown Band or the James Brown Orchestra. Brown's success peaked in the 1960s with the live album Live at the Apollo and hit singles such as "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag", "I Got You (I Feel Good)" and "It's a Man's Man's Man's World". During the late 1960s, Brown moved from a continuum of blues and gospel-based forms and styles to a profoundly "Africanized" approach to music-making that influenced the development of funk music.[5] By the early 1970s, Brown had fully established the funk sound after the formation of The J.B.'s with records such as "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine" and "The Payback". Brown also became notable for songs of social commentary, including the 1968 hit "Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud". Brown continued to perform and record for the duration of his life until his death in 2006 from congestive heart failure.
Brown recorded 16 number-one singles on the Billboard R&B charts.[6] Brown also holds the record as the artist to have charted the most singles on the Billboard Hot 100 which did not reach number one on that chart.[7][8] Brown was honored by many institutions including inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame.[9] In Joel Whitburn's analysis of the Billboard R&B charts from 1942 to 2010, Hot R&B Songs, James Brown is ranked as number one in The Top 500 Artists.[10] Brown is ranked seventh on the music magazine Rolling Stone's list of its 100 greatest artists of all time. Rolling Stone has also cited Brown as the most sampled artist of all time.[11]

Early life[edit]
James Joseph Brown was born on May 3, 1933, in Barnwell, South Carolina, to 16-year-old Susie (née Behling; 1917–2003) and 22-year-old Joseph "Joe" Gardner Brown (1911–1993), in a small wooden shack.[12] Brown's name was supposed to have been Joseph James Brown, Jr.; however, his first and middle names were mistakenly reversed on his birth certificate.[1] Brown later legally changed his name to remove the "Jr." designation. His parents were both African-American; in his autobiography, Brown stated that he also had Chinese and Native American ancestry.[13][14] The Brown family lived in extreme poverty in Elko, South Carolina, which was an impoverished town at the time.[7] They later relocated to Augusta, Georgia, when Brown was four or five.[15] Brown's family first settled at one of his aunts' brothels and later moved into a house shared with another aunt.[15] Brown's mother later left the family after a contentious marriage and moved to New York.[16] Brown spent long stretches of time on his own, hanging out in the streets and hustling to get by. Brown managed to stay in school until sixth grade.
Brown began singing in talent shows as a young child, first appearing at Augusta's Lenox Theater in 1944, winning the show after singing the ballad "So Long".[17] While in Augusta, Brown performed buck dances for change to entertain troops from Camp Gordon at the start of World War II as their convoys traveled over a canal bridge from near his aunt's home.[17] Brown learned how to play piano, guitar and harmonica during this period. Brown became inspired to become an entertainer after seeing footage of Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five performing "Caldonia" in a short film.[18] During his teen years, Brown briefly had a career as a boxer.[19] At 16, Brown was convicted of robbery and was sent to a juvenile detention center in Toccoa.[20] Brown formed a gospel quartet with four fellow cellmates, including Johnny Terry. Stories differ as to how Brown was eventually paroled, including a story that Bobby Byrd's family had helped to secure an early release, while another stated that Brown got his parole after a car and motor manufacturing company owner, S.C. Lawson, agreed to be a sponsor after Brown had promised to look for a job guaranteed for two years.[21] Brown was paroled on June 14, 1952.[21] Upon his release, Brown joined a gospel group and worked at several jobs, including the Lawson Motor Company and as a janitor at a local school.[22] Brown and Bobby Byrd reportedly met following his release from prison and the two became friends.[23]
Music career[edit]
The Famous Flames[edit]
Main article: The Famous Flames
Brown joined Byrd's group, which highlighted under two names, as an a cappella gospel group called the Gospel Starlighters, and an R&B band known as the Avons.[23] Brown had allegedly joined the band after one of the group's members, Troy Collins, was killed.[24] Along with Brown and Byrd, the group consisted of Sylvester Keels, Doyle Oglesby, Fred Pulliam, Nash Knox and Nafloyd Scott. Influenced by R&B groups such as Hank Ballard and The Midnighters, The Orioles and Billy Ward and his Dominoes, the group changed its name, first to the Toccoa Band, and then to the Flames.[22][24] Nafloyd's brother Baroy later joined the group on bass guitar and Brown, Byrd and Keels switched lead positions and instruments, often playing drums and piano. Johnny Terry later joined while Pulliam and Oglesby had long left.[25]
Berry Trimier became the group's initial manager booking them at parties near college campuses in the Georgia and South Carolina areas.[26] The group had already gained a reputation for being a live act when they renamed themselves the "Famous Flames".[27] By 1955, the group had contacted Little Richard, who was idolized by Brown, while performing in Macon.[28][29] Richard convinced the group to get in contact with Richard's manager at the time, Clint Brantley, at his nightclub.[30] Brantley agreed to manage them after seeing the group audition. [31] Brantley then sent them to a local radio station to record a demo session, where they performed their own composition "Please, Please, Please", which was inspired when Little Richard wrote the words of the title on a napkin and Brown was determined to make a song out o

The Necklace vs. the Story of an Hour

...Week 4 Assignment Sandra Kemp INF 103 Theodore Fekete Augusta 6, 2012 INTRODUCTION Computer Literacy Computer literacy is defined as the knowledge and ability to use a computer and related technology efficiently, with a range of skills covering levels from elementary use to programming and problem solving. Computer literacy can also refer to the comfort someone has with using the computer and other applications that are associated with the computer. Arthur Luehrmann was one of the first to popularize the term computer literacy, when in 1972, he realized the important role that it would play in the educational environment ( Moursund, 2003). Computers are everywhere, our home, work, and schools. When I think about it my nieces know how to use them better than I do. With everyone having access to a computer these days, you can’t help but wonder if everyone is playing nice. Cyber Bullying is a serious issue in today‘s school and business I think this problem can be solved if people are educated on Netiquette, when cyber bulling happens it is important to document and report the behavior so it can be addressed. Something else we need to think about is making sure our online students are not ‘’flaming each other in a way that can cause damage. Flaming, this is a term that describes an increasingly intense and vicious debates. One way to handle this problem is for instructors to monitor classroom discussion board, and if it appears that a discussion...

Policing America

...Policing America by John Stossel EN3220 Isabel Ambriz ITT Technical Institute – Tempe, AZ Abstract Most of us think that living in America is living in a free country. You think that being on your cell phones, nobody is listening, your computers, nobody is controlling it but you, or even being in your homes, nobody can see inside because your doors and windows are closed. What about when you are driving from one town to another, you would think that there is no need to carry your citizenship, because you are not crossing any borders. You think that the police is protecting you, so there is no need to fear them. What about our neighbors, can we trust them at all? Our children, are they safe in the schools, will they release them if there is a bomb threat? Policing America by John Stossel Most of us think that living in America is living in a free country. ...Process: I began the writing process by making an outline. I thought about the reasons and how much support I would need to validate. I don’t think more outline could have made my essay better simply because I think I did an efficient amount of work on outlining the essay. Also given the time constraint of writing the essay I don’t think it would be best to spend more time than I did on the outline because I barely finished the essay. Introduction: I think my essay has an engaging hook by using a quote from the prompt we were given. I take a position firmly not discrediting everything Thomas Paine says just that America isn’t together. I don’t really address the prompt’s background information just saying that America then is different from today. I think with saying that the audience can assume when Thomas Paine wrote that quote it was in a different time period. I think my thesis does effectively address the prompt. I think it just shortens the quote which I think makes the argument better by not fully disagreeing with Thomas Paine on all front just with one thing. Body: I think my body paragraphs flow logically. I chose to order them by the time period I deem the issue fits. Since fighting over religion is a thing you see time and time again throughout history I chose to put that since it not only a problem in America but lasting problem in the world. Then I put the systematic problems we have in the lower class people of America’s neighborhood and since so many things...

Anzia Yezierska's Poem 'The New Colossus'

...what it means to be American What defines an American? An American is someone who is free to go on their own path and strive for what they want, knowing that they can accomplish their goal. One of the great things about America is the freedom to choose your own path and live your life to your standards. To be free of the restriction and oppression of the former land. Many immigrants from this land were people with dreams and hopes of a future to be free of what they had left behind. in the poem “The New Colossus” when the author says “give me your tired your poor your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”she saw the statue of liberty she saw freedom and opportunity to start living the life she wants. An example of of this would Goerge from Of Mice and Men. The author quotes that george's dream is to “Have a little house and a couple of acres and a cow and some pigs.” He believes in his dream as much as lennie does but he also knows the challenges that are going to go along with it. Something that relates to becoming an American dream is you have to be independent how you have to be your own master. One thing that Americans need to show is that they can be in their own way useful before they are accepted. Anzia Yezierska a russian immigrant states she “would give out America. The hidden sap of centuries would find release and colors that never saw light.” her dream is to show the Americans herself her potential as quoted. But as she started living in America she started...

Throughout, my visit to the Augusta Museum of History the most rewarding experiences that I’ve gathered are quite intriguing. One of which is the exhibition of the late Mr. James brown, known as “The Godfather of Soul.” “World-renowned music star James Brown (May 3, 1933 - December 25, 2006) called the Augusta-area home his entire life. Born in Augusta and maintaining a home in Beech Island, South Carolina until his death on Christmas Day in 2006, Brown maintained a business presence in Augusta while managing a steady international touring schedule. Local honors to the legendary musician include the renaming of the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center to James Brown Arena in September 2006, the renaming of 9th Street to James Brown Boulevard in 1993, and a life-size statue of the singer installed on Broad Street in May 2005.” (http://chronicle.augusta.com/topics/people/james-brown#more) The exhibition featured rare memorable and personal artifacts which vividly tell the story of Brown’s rise to worldwide fame. The exhibit...

Circle of Faith in Action

...12/8/09 Christian Service Learning Essay: Circle of Faith-In-Action Through the story of the king and the sparrow, we come to realize the implications that social justice has on a community. In following the circle of faith-in-action, we realize the king became aware, analyzed, and acted only after his death. The circle of faith-in-action began with the king's awareness of his people's suffering, then he analyzed his options to help, finally he acted by removing his jewels to help those in need. Although the king directly supported those in need through monetary donations, he effectively neglected their long term needs to survive. In relation to the story of the king, American society and culture can be used as a counterpoint to such generosity and kindness. America's materialistic and selfish society evokes a sense of disdain and contempt for those who are truly in need. However, when the materialistic age of the wanton spending of wealth comes to an end; Americans may become aware, analyze, and act. The capitalistic culture of America demands a constant stream of funding through materialistic nature of the American public. Through the public's purchasing of unnecessary goods, American businesses are able to grow and expand, a necessary factor of all capitalistic corporations. However, the fundamentally flawed idea of materialistic needs is drilled into the brain of every American at birth, inevitably leading to a mass consensus. Through advertisements, Americans are...

The American Dream

...The American Dream The grass is always greener on the other side. Many people have gone to America in search of “The American Dream”. Many have succeeded, but even more have fallen flat on their faces. Apparently the grass is greener on the other side, but you need a lawnmower to handle all the grass. What I mean with my last sentence is that you can’t just go to America and get rich. You have to have a skill, something you are good at. The lawnmower is the skill and the grass is America. I have read about lots of people who wanted to get rich and famous and so they thought that they just could go to America and become rich overnight. What they don’t realize is that you have to have a skill because you need to earn your money and earn your respect. ...Running Room Individual Assignment What do you think about the train-the-trainer approach used at the Running Room? What are the advantages and disadvantages? The train-the-trainer program teaches subject-matter experts how to design and deliver training programs (264). They are often asked to do training programs because they have unique knowledge and the needs of a particular group of trainees. I am not sure if a store manager would really be considered a SME with unique knowledge and skills. A store manager who is new to the company may not know how to train other employees in general. A manger may also not have the best customer service skills, but knows how to sell or do merchandizing. I think the Running Room may want to train the managers of the various Running Room stores more than once a year possibly. I do think it is an advantage that the Running Room provides a forum for managers to discuss training issues, initiatives and challenges. The only problem is that they have 111 managers, and I think having one training program once a year for that many of them is not a good idea. For one, since there is such a large the amount of managers that are there, I highly doubt every single one would be able to voice their opinions about their training problems and concerns. If you think about it, if every manager had only one minute to speak, that would be almost 2 hours of managers just voicing their concerns before the training day really begins. For two, due to the vast...
