There have been many concerns about the production of food in society. People always want to feel safe and secure when deciding on where and how to purchase their food. It has been said that food that comes from overpopulated factories are not so sanitized compared to the great food that is being produced at co-op farms. Ultimately, overfishing has become a major issue, fishing too much can affect the environment where the fish live at. The moral of the goal is to keep our farms and water environments more sustainable than they have ever been. There is one situation that should be examined in food production and it is the effects of having overpopulated farms that could ultimately affect the environment. Freshly grown food is often more nutritious because it is not being shipped long distances, which makes locally grown food delicious and healthy. Co-op food is not only good for your health but it is also good for the environment. In Opperman’s article he presents several reasons why society should support co-op farms, “including a preference for supporting local family farms, access to fresh, healthy food…the psychic comfort of knowing that our carnivorous tendencies are sustained by animals that live like, well, animals and not as cogs in some brutal industrial machine” (119). Opperman is very concerned and supportive of the treatment of animals that are inhabited at co-op farms, he wants to ensure that the animals are not only stable and surrounded by a sanitized environment, but also healthy enough to be a food source. He believes society should support local family orient farms that guarantee access to unimpaired food. Per Opperman, great food production starts within local co-op farms that can ultimately lead to a more healthier food chain and food distribution. She is basically explaining how the way of fishing effects the water environment where fish inhabit at. Some people in society do not think about the consequences behind overfishing, they only look at fish as some type of food source. Overfishing can completely destroy the food chain and have a major impact on ecosystems, biodiversity and economic.
