Johnson and Johnson Healthcare Success
Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) is the world's largest healthcare company. Founded in the United States in 1886, the company has been profitable for 75 straight years and currently operates 250 subsidiary companies in 57 countries (Johnson & Johnson [JNJ], n.d.). JNJ’s products fall into three segments: pharmaceuticals, with 39% of total sales, medical devices and diagnostics with 36%, and consumer products, with 25% (JNJ, n.d.). Additionally, the company employs 119,200 people worldwide and sells its products in 175 countries (JNJ, n.d.). A truly global corporation, Johnson & Johnson has securely positioned itself to overcome the challenges of its ever changing business environment, as well as take advantage of the opportunities presented. Johnson and Johnson strives to live by its Mission and Vision Statement, as well as provide a mission statement that touches all consumers in every geographical location.
Medical technology is one of the fastest moving industries in the world, and it is not surprising that competition within it is fierce. There are two major social changes on the horizon that will both affect JNJ as well as provide tremendous opportunities for consumers and stockholders. The first is the aging population. The large baby-boomer generation, consisting of those born between 1946 and 1964, has had a huge social and economic impact on the world since its birth. The influx of senior citizens will create huge demands throughout all realms of medical care. Johnson & Johnson can expect to see increased sales across all three of its segments, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and diagnostics (Global Pharmaceutical Industry, n.d.). Additionally, in order to cater to the aging population, JNJ is pioneering developments in preventative medicine as well as less invasive surgery techniques.

Buddha

...Lyndon B. Johnson took office during the 1960’s waging war with Vietnam. The people of Vietnam split into two different nations. The southern part of the country had a communist style of government and desired to take over the north. Unfortunately communism was the primary fear of American politicians and most American citizens. Although many Americans sided against going to aid North Vietnam, President Lyndon Johnson felt it was his duty as Commander and Chief of the United States Military to police the world and stop the spread of communism. America entered Vietnam in 1965; one of the first major battles was the Battle of La Drang. The Battle of La Drang took place from November 14-18 1965. The American troops were out numbered 3,000 to 300. The American army was led by Colonel Harold G. Moore. This battle was the first major battle in which constant air support was used. The strategy was helicopters would bring and take men in and out of battle every thirty minutes. This strategy would save over 200 American lives. The first wave of soldiers landed at approximately 10:48 A.M. Within the first thirty minutes of landing US troops had secured the landing zone and a creek bed. While setting up their perimeters along the creek bed the American troops spotted a SVA spy. After securing the creek bed Colonel Moore was informed that one of his platoons had been separated from the battalion. The leader of the cut off platoon Captain Herrick, he had a vital decision whether to attempt...

...JOHNSON & JOHNSON AND THE TYLENOL POISONING A bottle of Tylenol is a common feature of any medicine cabinet as a safe and reliable painkiller, but in the fall of 1982, this household brand was driven to the point of near extinction along with the fortunes of parent company Johnson & Johnson as a result of a product tampering case that has never been solved. On September 29, 1982, seven people in the Chicago area died after taking Extra-Strength Tylenol capsules that had been laced with cyanide. Investigators later determined that the bottles of Tylenol had been purchased or shoplifted from seven or eight drugstores and supermarkets and then replaced on shelves after the capsules in the bottle had been removed, emptied of their acetaminophen powder, and filled with cyanide. The motive for the killings was never established, although a grudge against Johnson & Johnson or the retail chains selling the brand was suspected. A man called James Lewis attempted to profit from the event by sending an extortion letter to Johnson & Johnson, presumably inspired by the $100,000 reward the company had posted, but the police dismissed him as a serious suspect. He was jailed for 13 years for the extortion but never charged with the murders. The response of Johnson & Johnson to the potential destruction of its most profitable product line has since become business legend and is taught today as a classic case study in crisis management at universities all over the world. Company chairman James...

Pricing Case J.C.Penney

...Case reflexing questions: 1- Evaluate the overall effectiveness of the "fair and square" repositioning strategy. How well or poorly do all of the elements work together or work at odds with one another to deliver a coherent whole? What elements are missing? In order to evaluate the strategy, its several elements need to be analyzed: The new name “Fair and Square” communicates honesty and simplicity to the consumers. It stands for a clearing up of the chaos the countless rebates and discounts, which were part of the past strategy. The new name aims exactly the perception consumers might had of being cheated by the department store. If JCP was able to give this huge amount of discounts (on average 40% off), what is the original price worth then? Customers might perceived normal prices as too high and the discount structure too complicated due to a lack of overview, which is the main idea of the new strategy. “Fair and Square” communicates trustworthy of the company. The new price strategy is therefore another key element of the new strategy and needs to be evaluated. By limiting the amount of discounts and special sales to regular daily prices increases transparency for the consumer and help to understand the new prices. Rounding prices from .99$ to the full Dollar communicates psychologically fairness as consumers can easier calculate their total expenses now and JCP doesn’t try to make their products seem to be cheaper as they actually are. But it also has to be mentioned...
