...Personal Motivation My main strength is my ability to excel in sports. Since I was a little kid I have played a variety of sports, ranging from soccer, baseball, swimming, and track. I was always one of the best players on my team and it gave me pride to do well for my team. Other strengths that I possess are being organized, being on time, and giving things that I love doing 100%. I’m good at completing a large amount of work in a small margin of time, I’m good at listening to people’s problems, I excel when working in groups, I’m a fast reader, I’m generous when it comes to people in need, and I can put myself in someone else’s shoes. A big weakness I have is procrastination. I often, if not always, will save my tasks for the last minute. This has become a bad habit that I would like to kick, but am just to accustom to it to start trying. Some other weaknesses that burden my life are my inability to publically speak well, not studying subjects that I need to, and my very bad memory. Some smaller, but still annoying weaknesses I have are not having great dribbling skills in soccer, not being able to focus on boring things for long periods of time, not eating healthy (at all), not scheduling appointments when I should, not having enough tolerance for people with radically different views than me, and not being content with the good things that I already have. Design/methodology/approach – A sample of 608 supermarket shoppers in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam was surveyed to test the model. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data. Findings – It was found that SMA and HSM had positive effects on SLO. It was also found that the impact of hedonic motivations on SLO was different between the younger and older, as well as lower and higher income groups of customers. However, no such difference was found between female and male shoppers. Research limitations/implications – A major limitation of this study was the use of a sample drawn from one transitional market. Cross-national samples will be a direction for further research. To asses job satisfaction, “Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS; Spector, 1997)”, and for motivation, “Motivation at Work Scale (MAWS, Gagné, M., et.al, 2010)”, were used. The sample of the study consists of 80 middle managers (46 males; 34 females) from different banks of Karachi, Pakistan. A Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was calculated for the correlation between the work motivation and job satisfaction. In order to find out gender differences t test was computed. BERRY University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Although many scholars believe that intrinsic motivation fuels creativity, research has returned equivocal results. Drawing on motivated information processing theory, we propose that the relationship between intrinsic motivation and creativity is enhanced by other-focused psychological processes. Perspective taking, as generated by prosocial motivation, encourages employees to develop ideas that are useful as well as novel. In three studies, using both field and lab data, we found that prosocial motivation strengthened the association between intrinsic motivation and independent creativity ratings. In our second and third studies, perspective taking mediated this moderating effect. We discuss theoretical implications for creativity and motivation. As work becomes increasingly dynamic, uncertain, and knowledge-based, organizations depend on creative ideas from employees (George, 2007). This paper aims to develop a motivation-based perspective to explore how organisations resolve the social dilemma of knowledge sharing. Design/methodology/approach – The analysis builds on a three-category taxonomy of motivation, adding ‘‘hedonic’’ motivation to the traditional dichotomy of ‘‘extrinsic’’ and ‘‘intrinsic’’ motivation. It uses case studies gleaned from the literature to explore the interactive effects between the different motivators in two different types of knowledge-intensive organisations: professional bureaucracy and operating adhocracy. Findings – Within a professional bureaucracy, the social dilemma of knowledge sharing may be overcome through normative motivation, with provision of hedonic motivation through extrinsic incentives such as training and career progression. In an operating adhocracy where interdependent teamwork is vital, it may be overcome through normative alignment reinforced by intensive socialisation. Extrinsic motivators that align with hedonic motivation may also reinforce the propensity for knowledge sharing.
