...Journey's End, a play based on the author, R.C Sherriff, experiences, portrays the condition of the First World War. The characters in the play each symbolized different aspects or ideas different people had when facing the same situation in the trenches. In the play, Osborne's role is very important because he showed the feeling of calmness despite any conflicts that were going on. His reaction to the war, his relationship with Stanhope, and how he settled down the conflicts between other characters in the play supported this. Osborne dealt with the war situation, the real physical conflict in the play, in a more mature way than any other characters. Besides from being the oldest, "about forty-five", and the most experienced, Osborne is married and has two children. He spent most of his free time in the trench reading "Alice in Wonderland" and he talked about "making a rockery" and gardening during his civilian life. This showed that he is rather a family man. Osborne said that he looked at the war in a "romantic" way; there is no point of looking at things in a "black sort of way" because everything will seem to be even worse for him. ...Poetry Essay: "Storm Warnings" & "Diving into the Wreck" In "Storm Warnings," and "Diving into the Wreck," by Adrienne Rich, both have the same idea of creating a place of sanction and comfort. The main lesson to learn from both of these poems is that one must create a place of sanctuary, where one can go back and look back on the past, and finally they learn to move on rather than to try fighting it. Specifically in "Storm Warnings," the narrator is comparing her emotions to the storm brewing outside. To illustrate, "weather abroad and weather in the heart alike come on regardless of prediction," literally means the weather is unpredictable. Also, it means that a person's emotional long haul is hanging by a thread and is erratic. Furthermore, the poem goes on saying that no matter what, you cannot change the weather, "Which clocks and weatherglasses cannot alter." Which just goes on to say that the person will have to come into reference with their emotions, and settle all the little issues. For example, the weather, pain, and sadness you feel inside you can be pretty unpredictable and can surprise you when you aren't careful. Pilenz and Mahlke also represent both animals: Pilenz the cat as direct or indirectly contributes to Mahlke's destruction, and then again the love and hate relationship that he feels towards Mahlke creates in him such dependence that later turns him into the mouse. Mahlke is the mouse. An animal which is also represented by Mahlke's apple of his throat because he is eternaly humiliated even though he keeps trying to be accepted by the Nazi society all the time, making all kind of feats to pay people's attention. Mahlke is also a cat because of the feelings of dependence and of inferiority that he awakes in Pilenz. The reader is not expected to share Pilenz admiration for Mahlke', due to the way Pilenz tells Mahlke's story.
