Failures in the Media During Columbine Shooting

Judgment Day April 20, 1999 marks the day of one of the bloodiest and most horrific school shootings in American history. Until the 2007 shooting at Virginia Technical Institute, it was the worst school shooting to date. On this day, two seniors, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, entered Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado and went on a killing spree for approximately 49 minutes, leaving 24 injured and 15 dead, including themselves. The two students had been planning this attack on the school for over a year. Had their plan gone accordingly, the carnage would have been far more severe.
The boys skipped their first period that day, arriving just before the lunch hour dressed in black trench coats carrying “several CO2 bombs, one semi-automatic 9mm handgun, a 9mm carbine rifle, a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun, and a sawed-off 12-gauge pump shotgun” (“Columbine”). They were also each carrying a duffel bag containing a twenty-pound propane bomb (“Columbine”). They placed a bomb in the cafeteria, set to explode at 11:17 a.m., the time when the most students would be in one concentrated area. The homemade bomb was strategically placed in the cafeteria to blow the ceiling of the room out, bringing the library crashing down upon explosion, killing another room full of students and faculty simultaneously. The two boys would be located outside the cafeteria, ready to shoot any student able to escape the explosion. Each of their cars were fully equipped with explosives set to detonate shortly thereafter, killing any fleeing individuals as well as any law enforcement officers, journalists and parents who would have undoubtedly flocked to the scene by then. Ironically, the only bomb that exploded properly that day was

Day of Judgement

...DAY OF JUDGMENT By Amr Khaled Start thinking about Judgment Day! But I don't want to be just telling stories, I want you to start imagining, with all your senses that you are there now. I'll try as hard as I can to draw a picture just as if you were really standing there. But please, forget that I am giving a lecture now, I'm not. We are just sitting together, imagining together what will happen on Resurrection Day (Judgment Day). My aim today is not to scare you. My aim is to tell you the facts about that day. How will it begin? "The Trumpet will just be sounded, when all that are in the heavens and on earth will swoon, except such as it will please Allah (to exempt). Then a second one will be sounded, when, behold, you will be standing and looking on!" "The trumpet shall be sounded, when behold! From the sepulchers (men) will rush forth to their Lord!" Today we will only speak about one topic– the standing on resurrection day waiting for judgment. After the trumpet is blown, your body parts start to join together, and your bones start to merge once more. Your brain starts thinking, your eyes open and you start to have life back again. Imagine what this great blow will do? It will bring back all the sand of earth that you were made from thousands of years ago. Imagine the greatness and power of this blow? The trumpet width is like the width of earth and skies together. Your grave cracks and opens from the mightiness of the blow. Are you visualizing this great...

Day Of Judgement In The Novel, Then There Were None By Agatha Christie

...In the novel Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, the author tone towards the story is dramatic The story takes place on an island where all the characters in the book are sent to an island to a’ special resort’ but turns out to be a trap to kill all the characters. Agatha Christie shows this town when one of the main characters, Mr. Blore gets warmed by someone on the street warming him the day of judgement is upon him. The author illustrates "Watch and pray. The day of judgment is at hand." He collapsed through the doorway onto the platform. From a recumbent position he looked up at Mr. Blore and said with immense dignity: "I'm talking to you, young man. The day of judgment is very close at hand." Subsiding onto his seat Mr. Blore thought to himself: "He's nearer the day of judgment than I am!"...

War Futility as Depicted by Ts Eliot

...them are not fated to reach their own country but would die in another man's land. Nevertheless, the land on which they sacrifice their lives for a great and common cause, gets to be their home while the land that was their home now ceases to be the same. Their great action would bring its own reward though they would not know of it 'until the judgement after death.' Another salient theme of the poem is the doctrine of Karma. Through the selfless action of the Indian soldier and his likes in Africa, the philosophy of the Bhagavad-Gita is echoed that - "To action alone has thou a right and never at all to its fruits; let not the fruits of actions be thy motive; neither let there be in thee any attachment to inaction". T.S. Eliot says in the last line of the third stanza that wherever he dies bravely that soil is his. It occurs to the poet that the soldiers of different countries fighting for a common objective may not know the outcome of their strivings. Nevertheless, this possibility does not diminish the worth of their sacrifice. They become immortal as they are glorified in the memory of their people through their sublime act. The judgement after death shows the poet's preoccupation...

Deprivation

...AO1: Values and Individual Rights Who were my Service Users? My work place was conducted in a nursery called Lilford Day Care centre. I knew about the placement because I used to attend the nursery when I was younger. This meant I was already familiar with my surroundings, and knew majority of the staff which it made it easier for me to get along with them, and feel comfortable around them. As being a part of the staff for 2 weeks I had various tasks that I had to complete. I had to think of creative and imaginative activities that I could involve the children with that would help them with their learning skills whilst having a fun time. So activities such as baking, going to parks and constructing puzzles helped to engage the children. As the children I worked with were aged 1-3 I couldn’t make the activities too challenging so that they could take part. I had to make sure that I fully engaged with the children, getting on the same level as them so that they saw me as a friend rather than towering over them and displaying threatening body language, I always made sure I remembered this when speaking to the children. What are ethics and values? Values- “Values are a set of beliefs or views that people hold about what is right or wrong and reflect a person’s sense of what is good or bad” (skillsforcare, 2015) Values are elements within your life which you find personally important, we use values as a core guide in which to conduct your life in a way that is meaningful and...

The first way is offer onsite day care facilities. The study suggests that on-site daycare is not only affordable; it is in many cases profitable. Further, the study found that a majority of workers would be willing to contribute to the cost of employer-sponsored daycare whether or not they used the benefit. "There are several kinds of employers who typically have on-site childcare, such as high-tech and healthcare industries, and others who need 24-hour workers, such as airline reservation companies," notes Connelly. "The few studies that have been done on on-site childcare focused on those companies with highly educated workforces. We were particularly interested in another group of companies - those who weren't offering daycare as part of a whole package of family-friendly benefits or because of a corporate philosophy, but rather because they had done an economic analysis of their particular set of workers and had decided that on-site childcare would be economically beneficial to their company." The second way is pet-friendly offices. Not all companies are created equal when it comes to the acceptance of dogs in the workplace. Some readily welcome your best friend while others...

...Vaughan Cohen Musical Copyright Infringement October 23, 2012 Prof. Hichborn Dillinger Four's "Doublewhiskeycokenoice” vs. Green Day’s “American Idiot” On September 21st, 2004, Green Day released their album “American Idiot,” a work that many believed to the catalyst for their comeback in the early 2000s. The album, released by Reprise Records and produced by their longtime partner Rob Cavallo, achieved huge success worldwide, charting in 27 countries and topping at number one in 19 of them, including the United States and the United Kingdom. American Idiot has sold over 14 million copies worldwide, over 6 million copies of which were in the United States alone, including 267,000 in its opening week (Gunderson, 2008). The album went on to be such a huge success, that in 2010 a Broadway musical was created based on the album, creatively entitled, “American Idiot; The Musical.” Five of the singles on this smash-hit album reached Platinum certification by the RIAA, possibly the most popular being the song entitled “American Idiot.” Among an array of other accolades, “American Idiot” was nominated for four Grammy Awards and was a number one on the charts for an impressive thirteen weeks, and in turn, no doubt brought a huge amount of financial success to the writers and composers of the composition. According to The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), there are three original writers of this composition, being Billy Joe Armstrong (singer), Mike...

Day Care Center - Philippines

...Overview Child care feasibility studies provide information critical to evaluating the potential of a new child care center, based on a complete review of the market dynamics, services, customers, competition, and pricing. This information can be used to determine if a child care center is feasible, and if so, what type of center to build, services to offer, and pricing levels. Since no two child care centers are the same, Perspectives Consulting Group, Inc. focuses on identifying and providing relevant information for each center using a customized research process. Our research process includes telephone interviews, contacting various city and state agencies, and researching the child care industry as a whole. Once the information is obtained, Perspectives Consulting Group, Inc. analyzes the information and provides direction for making effective and efficient decisions. Child Care Feasibility Studies Although each child care center under consideration is unique, generally, child care feasibility studies profile five areas: • Market Dynamics - General information on the child care market • Services - What type of child care services are being sought out • Customers - Who currently purchases child care services • Competition - Who provides the current child care services offered • Pricing - What pricing levels are there for child care services Often, the most productive information is found by talking directly to customers and competitors in the market. The Power of Small Wins

...WHAT IS THE BEST WAY to drive innovative work inside organizations? Important clues hide in the stories of world-renowned creators. ItturnS out that ordinary scientists, marketers, programmers, and other unsung knowledge workers, whose jobs require creative productivity every day, have more in common with famous innovators than most managers realize. The workday events that ignite their emotions, fuel their motivation, and trigger their perceptions are fundamentally the same. The Double Helix, James Watson's 1968 memoir about discovering the structure of DNA, describes the roller coaster of emotions he and Francis Crick experienced through the progress and setbacks of the work that eventually earned them the Nobel Prize. After the excitement of their first attempt to build a DNA model, Watson and Crick noticed some serious flaws. According to Watson, "Our first minutes with the models…were not joyous." Later that evening, "a shape began to emerge which brought back our spirits." But when they showed their "breakthrough" to colleagues, they found that their model would not work. Dark days of doubt and ebbing motivation followed. When the duo finally had their bona fide breakthrough, and their colleagues found no fault with it, Watson wrote, "My morale skyrocketed, for I suspected that we now had the answer to the riddle." Watson and Crick were so driven by this success that they practically lived in the lab, trying to complete the work. Throughout these episodes, Watson and...

A Second Chance

...Harold Ramis’s film, “Groundhog Day” and Franz Kafka’s story, “The Metamorphosis”, both main characters are faced with a life-changing event because of the way they live their lives. In Groundhog Day the main character Phil is an arrogant, sarcastic weatherman absorbed in his own discomforts, without hope, and cut off from other people. He is forced to relive the same day, groundhogs day, over and over again. In “The Metamorphosis the main character is Gregor Samsa, a man who spends his time working to pay off a debt for his father. Gregor wakes up to find that he has turned into a beetle. Throughout these two works the main characters try to go back to living their life as before not realizing that this is their second chance at life to make things right. Phil manages to do so only by breaking through and becoming a person of intimacy, creativity and compassion which sets him free from his exile of living in the same day over and over again. As for Gregor, going from someone everyone depends on to something no one wants to care for, he doesn’t get a chance to have everything go back to normal. He dies and his family, for once, is relieved. Groundhog Day lets us experience what it would be like to make a breakthrough like this in our own lives. The movie shows us a character that is like the worst in ourselves. Like us, he finds himself in an inexplicable situation, something like fate. But, unlike us, he gets the luxury of being stuck in the same day until he gets it right. Where...
