In “Abuela Invents the Zero” the author, Judith Ortiz-Cofer, makes clear references to societal pressure being a big influence in many choices. The author states, “I just hope that nobody I know sees us together” (Ortiz-Cofer para. 11). Due to the standards that have been set for her make her not want to help. She cares so much about what her friends think of her, she doesn’t want to help her own grandmother. Based on what I read, “I just know that on Monday my friends[...] will have a lot of senile -grandmother jokes to tell [...]” (Ortiz-Cofer para. 14). An example of how Constancia treats her grandmother with disrespect comes from the text. The text says, “So since she’s only four feet eleven inches tall, she walks around in my mother’s big coat looking ridiculous. I try to walk far behind in public so that no one will think we’re together.” (Cofer 4) This shows that Constancia was so embarrassed to be seen by her grandmother just because of a jacket she was wearing.
