After reading the assigned text I have come to find out the juvenile court system differs from the adult courts in many ways. However, the juvenile court system has many similarities as the adult system as well. The difference between the juvenile courts and the adults courts are, the juvenile courts emphasize helping the child, rehabilitating the child. The juvenile courts are informal, rules of evidence and rules of procedures have little relevance in juvenile proceedings. Juvenile courts are based on civil law, this is the key notion that juvenile courts were intended to rehabilitate, not punish. Juvenile courts are secret, crime victims and ordinary citizens are not allowed in the court sessions and it is illegal for law enforcement personnel and court officials to release the names of juveniles to the media. However, by statue, juveniles also have the right to a transcript and a right to counsel for their first appeal. In contrast, the adult courts seeks to achieve punishment for an offender. The adult courts are formal and adversarial in nature, rules of evidence and rules of procedures are important. Adult courts are based on criminal law, concerned with the punishment of those who commit crimes. Adult courts are open to the public, except for grand jury proceedings. Adult courts allow the accused the rights to a jury trial by their peers. Lastly, adults have no right to counsel in the appeal process. Some similarities of the two courts are, both juvenile and adults have the right to an attorney, both have the right to confront and cross examine witnesses, both have the privilege against self incrimination, both have the right to notice of the charges, and both have the right that the prosecution must provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt before a person can be
