K+12 CURRICULUM REACTION PAPER
Introduction When people used the word curriculum, it is usually referring to the content chosen to be taught – the official curriculum. In the K to 12 Basic Education Program of the Department of Education, a new curriculum was designed to develop a learner who possess a healthy mind and body; has a solid moral and spiritual grounding; has essential knowledge and skills for lifelong learning and self-actualization; engages in critical thinking and creative problem solving; contributes to the development of a progressive, just, and humane society; is proud to be a Filipino; and appreciates the beauty around him/her and cares for the environment for a sustainable future. This enhanced curriculum from the Kindergarten to the senior high school aims to produce holistically developed learners with the 21st century skills. How can all these mission and vision of the K to 12 programs be attained? It can be attained through the child centered or learner centered curriculum that high lights the said program of the Department of Education. Body As I was looking at the new curriculum of the K to 12 Basic Education Program of the Department of Education, I am beginning to appreciate the effort made by the government to uplift the kind of education in our country. The Curriculum that was made for the Kindergarten until the senior high school was quite satisfying for me because it is really the product of different researches to make the education system in our country a better one. The teaching of MTB-MLE as one of the subjects from Grade 1 to Grade 3 and as the medium of instruction from kinder to Grade 3 was implemented to develop well-rounded and life-long learners under the K to 12 basic education reform program. The given competencies for the Mother Tongue in the Grade 1 to Grade 3 comprises with the oral language, phonological skills, book

Education in the Philippines is managed and regulated by the Department of Education, commonly referred to as the DepEd in the country. It also regulates the construction of schools and other educational facilities and the recruitment of teachers and staff. From 1945 until 2011, the basic education system was composed of six years of elementary education starting at the age of 6, and four years of high school education starting at the age of 12.Further education was provided by technical or vocational schools, or in higher education institutions such as universities. It is also in the year 2011when the country started to transition from its old 10-year basic educational system to a K to 12 educational system, as mandated by the Department of Education. President Benigno “Nonoy” S. Aquino singed the K to 12 education into law in the year 2013. The K to 12 was not only made by the DepEd Central office but through the collaboration of the CHED, TESDA, DEPED and the different stakeholders like the parents of the children in schools. The complete human development of every graduate is at the core of the Enhanced K to 12 Basic Education Program. Every graduate holds an understanding of the world around and a zest for life-long learning, which addresses every child’s basic learning needs, including learning to learn, the acquisition of numeracy, literacies, and scientific and technological knowledge as applied to daily life. He believed that the nation with a hollistic mind will surely be a great nation. Change comes from within. Replicate the change within you to other. It starts within ourselves, within our family, within our school, community, afterwards our country and the whole world as well. This was envisioned by the Philippine Education through the Implementation of the K to 12 Curriculum, to develop hollistic filipino citizen, globally competetive one and God-fearing individual responsible for the change and challenges the world offers him. We are in a fast pacing world where change is inevitable. We have to upgrade ourselves. Upgrading means-developing ones skills and potentials to the fullest, adopting ourselves to this ever changing world and accepting challenge and modernization this world offers. Achieving these things, an individual must take the courage to change himself or herself. These changes if could not be meet become a hindrance to develop himself and be a successful one but if these changes were realized, one is climbing the ladder towards success. Critique Paper on the K to 12 Curriculum

...Critique Paper on the K to 12 Curriculum The central feature of the K to 12 Program is the upgrading of the basic education curriculum to ensure that learners acquire the relevant knowledge and skills they will need to become productive members of society. With the participation of the Commission on Higher Education and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, the program has the capability of offering professionally designed classes and apprenticeships in sports, the arts, middle-level skills, entrepreneurship, and applied math and sciences. It will take years, but we will have to start with basic prerequisites. Crucial is improving higher education. As for my arguments in favor of the K+12 educational programs, I offer these insights based not on controlled experiments, but on personal observation only. First, the quality of today’s science and technology graduates all over the world (especially in contemporary physical science and engineering, and increasingly in the life sciences as well) depends critically on the content of the most common technical pre-requisites: 1) mathematics, including calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, probability and statistics; 2) physics, including mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and elementary statistical and quantum theory; and 3) chemistry beyond the traditional molecular accounting taught in survey courses,  including some of what is otherwise  reserved for intermediate courses...

Reaction Paper in K-12 Basic Education Curriculum-Mathematics

...manipulative objects, measuring devices, computers, smart phones, tablet PCs and the internet is very essential for students’ development of critical thinking skills wherein they can explore and answer their personal problems or confusions by using appropriate tools allowed for them. If these tools can only be used correctly and effectively by students, we can produce students that are globally competitive and can bring pride to the Philippines with no doubt. The principles followed by the K-12 Basic Education Curriculum will ideally bring great change to the educational system of the Philippines. Students nowadays are very exploring especially in computer generated knowledge and experiences and make some self-study which I can say very effective in gaining vast amount of in-depth knowledge on their own. Therefore, I can strongly say that these principles are suited for them and if eternalized by the students and teachers can give a big change to our fact-finding students. The mathematics curriculum allows for students to learn by asking relevant questions and discovering new ideas. Lots of questions like how? and why? Can be answered this idea that students learn when they make use of personal experiences...

...READINESS OF GRADE IV TEACHERS IN TEACHING K TO 12 CURRICULUM Background of the Study The implementation of the K to 12 education plan in the Philippine Basic Education Curriculum is the key to our nation’s development. Though the government will face many problems in the long run of the implementation of the program, there really is a need to implement it because the enhancement of the quality of our education is very urgent and critical. Teachers will be given sufficient in-service training on content and pedagogy to implement this program. Currently the Deped Grade 4 teachers have been trained to meet the content and performance standards of the enhanced K to 12 Curriculum. Both public and private schools participated on 5 days training thru sending their teachers to be ready and well prepared on the opening of classes. Although the Grade 4 teachers are said to ready for the K to 12 Curriculum, there is another challenging part for them to battle with. It is insufficient teacher’s guide, books and teaching material to facilitate learning process. May be the government take alternative plan to meet the target in implementing the program without suffering the quality of education every learner should get. Statement of the Problem: This study aims to find out the level of readiness of the grade IV teachers in teaching k to 12 curriculum in Sta. Barbara District I. The Percetive of Ys10 Learners to K12

...THE PERCEPTION OF YS-10 LEARNERS IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE K-12 CURRICULUM A research presented to In Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for CAE, Economics and Mathematics 11 CHAPTER I PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING I. Introduction Education is a basic human right and a significant factor in the development of children, communities, and countries. (Herz, B. and Sperling G.B., 2004) It is valued by a lot of Filipinos mainly because it is the start of economic improvement and it is the key to a brighter future. The Philippines was one of only three countries in the world and the only one in Asia that still had 10 years in basic education. This has always been seen as a disadvantage for the learners who are competing in an increasingly global job market and also reason of having a high number of unemployment in the country. The government asserts that with the implementation of K12 program, the problem of unemployment in the country will be resolved. In as much as employment in the Philippines is concerned, the K12 education also responds to the fact that most countries in the world already have the same plan in their educational institutions. With this, the standards of these countries go a notch higher than what the country has, thus, creating an expansion in the global competency. (DepEd, 2010) President Aquino aforementioned that we needed to add two more years of basic education in the country. Those who can afford to pay up to fourteen...

Difference Between K-12 and Non K-12

...that we need to achieve are some elements that need to be looked upon. A similar set of constraints when applied to education in schools and colleges gives birth to curriculum. A curriculum is a set of courses, including their content, offered at a school or university. The curriculum often contains a detailed list of subjects and the elements of teaching them. John Franklin Bobbitt’s “The Curriculum” published in 1918 mentions curriculum as an idea that has its roots in the Latin word ‘race-course’. He also explained “The Curriculum” as the course of deeds and experiences through which children grow up into adults and get going for success in the society. A curriculum is more than putting together a set of academically required subjects. It must consider all aspects of the student life, the learning needs of students, the time available for the sessions and the teachers’ idea, capability and workload. At high school levels, teenagers can take their own liberty in choosing their path. Though complete autonomy does not rest with a student, a level of choice is very evident. This helps in the development of the teenager, with added importance of being given the field of his own choice. At this stage, the development is more focused and rampant, enhanced through a proper curriculum. Without an effective curriculum, a student would not be able to understand or meet the challenges of the society. In 1995, consultations about the Philippine...

Supapo West Visayas State University College of Education La Paz, Iloilo City, Philippines brazamelanie@gmail.com swedensupaposobrevega@gmail.com ABSTRACT This study was an attempt to find out the problems and solutions of one rural grade 7 teacher in a Philippine public high school in the implementation of K to 12 Mathematics curriculum. It is believed that knowledge is constructed when learners are able to draw ideas from their own experiences and connects them to new ideas while cooperative learning puts premium on active learning achieved by working with fellow learners as they all engage in a shared task. There were three main problem categories/themes including administrativerelated, teacher-related and student-related. The findings include: (a) lack of trainings, seminars, unclear standard operating procedures, (b) late arrival and lack of modules, (c) developing/weak teaching skills and strategies, (d) teacher’s difficulty in teaching the subjects or contents, (e)lack of time to tackle the content efficiently, (f) unavailability or lack of instructional materials, (g) non-mastery of the basic concepts and skills, (h) poor problem solving and critical thinking skills (i) indifferent student behaviour. The solutions are sharing of modules or guides, conducting cooperative learning class,...

Spiral Progression Model

...Spiral Progression Model (Summary and Reaction) The Department of Education Order (DO) no. 31, series of 2012, describes the new curriculum this way: “The overall design of the Grades 1 to 10 curriculum follows the spiral approach across subjects by building on the same concepts developed in increasing complexity and sophistication starting from grade school. Teachers are expected to use the spiral/progression approach in teaching competencies.” One thing notable about this progression model is that it will provide a beautiful continuum of learning for the student from kinder until he or she graduates from basic education curriculum. At the onset of the continuum the learner is given a good start by having a good grasp of the basic concepts or the foundational objectives through the use of mother tongue-based learning to the students. This would make it easier for the students to learn the concepts because their attention is not divided into learning the English language and understanding the concept itself. Now, the students may focus on learning the concept first and later on learn the English language on a spiral growth rate. It should also be noted that this curriculum with the spiral approach would not only be introduced in science and math but in all subject areas from grades 1 to 10. But what is the spiral approach? The Spiral Progression Model is an approach in teaching which provides to its students first the basic facts of a subject without worrying about details...

Six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of Senior High School (SHS) to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners. In 2011, the Department of Education started to implement the new K-12 educational system, which also included a new curriculum for all schools nationwide. The K-12 program has a so-called "phased implementation", which started in school year 2011-2012. According to the DepEd Sec. Armin Luistro said that there is no stopping the implementation of the K to 12 Program, particularly Senior High School (SHS) Program which will be implemented nationwide starting school year 2016-2017. The President lauded the DepEd and its partners for the continued implementation of the K to 12 Program. The Republic Act 10533 or the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 also known as the “K to 12 Law” which was signed by Aquino in May 2013. The summit was attended by teachers, school heads, students, parents, local government units (LGUs), and representatives from the private sector with other stakeholders. Department of Education maintained that it is not giving President Benigno Aquino III wrong information on the government’s readiness to implement the K to 12 program, contrary to claims made by a senator. In a statement Communication Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said that “The K to 12 program is important for the country’s...
