“Monster”: Misogyny, Racism, and Popular Culture Kanye West is a prominent figure in popular culture nowadays and his reputation is quite complicated and conflicting. West is acclaimed as one of the best rappers of this era, and is celebrated as a successful entrepreneur and fashion designer. However, he is also frequently condemned for his outspoken personality and offensive attitude. From numerous acceptance speech interruptions to questionable interviews and statements, Kanye West has created a contradictory image for himself in the media and is often characterized as a misogynist. The music video for his single “Monster,” in which he collaborated with Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Bon Iver, and Nicki Minaj, was released in 2011 and almost immediately became known as deeply controversial: the six-minute clip, which depicts dead women hanging from ceilings and scantily clad in lingerie, was banned by MTV for its violence and explicit content toward women (Vassar). Undeniably, the misogynistic theme runs throughout the video, however, West has defended himself by stating that “the concept of models hanging or people being eaten alive or [other] type of visuals for a horrific video was purely artistic” and addressed the ignorance of misogynistic accusations by claiming that “they [women’s rights activists] couldn’t understand how a rapper can have a taste high enough to do something like that without being misogynistic” (Staff). This paper addresses elements of the “Monster” clip that depict elements of historical racism and sexual objectification through the animalistic and hyper-sexualized representation of women of colour in the video, while also drawing parallels between supernatural characters and thirst for consumerism. Undeniably “Monster” has sparked many discussions regarding misogyny and violence against women, however this video should also be embraced as a creative and artistic endeavour that addresses issues of the modern society: racism, objectification of women and consumer culture. Michel Mourlet stated, “Cinema is the art most attuned to violence.” (Mourlet) Kanye West’s clip is inspired by classic horror film genre and uses gothic and horror-related images. The artist, a voracious consumer of popular culture, references cult horror films such as “American Psycho,” “Saw,” and the allegedly haunted painting “The Hands Resist Him.” (McCall) The video portrays the quasi-naked, nameless corpse-looking models; some scenes depict black women as animalistic savages and demons. The video is set in a castle, with the setting being similar to that of Doctor Frankenstein. Jay-Z and Rick Ross appear in the video in darkly lit rooms, wearing expensive suits, and surrounded by half-naked corpses. Nicky Minaj performs two versions of herself in “Monster”: the vampire dressed in gothic-inspired outfit refers to her Roman Zolanski alter ego, and a pink-haired Barbie version, which is tortured by vampire Minaj, accentuates the qualities of a fun and girly girl, that loves all things pink (Figure 1). This scene represents the internal struggle over issues of identity and public image a young female artist faces: she is aware of her ‘Barbie’ image, yet recognizes it as fake and shallow. Ironically, the only member not featured in the music video is the Caucasian Bon Iver; the only Caucasians pictures in the clip at all are not only female, but also mostly dead.
Although horror is only one genre of film, horror movies can largely influence audiences across the globe in an effective manner. With the use of explicit images, artists have an opportunity to reach out to international viewers in order to raise awareness for a particular issue or social injustice. It is implied in the video that the ‘monsters’ that the rappers represent have killed the women. Lisa Downing writes in her article Beyond Reasonable Doubt: Aesthetic Violence and Motiveless Murder in French Decadent Fiction, “the murderer is set up as a privileged subject, while his victims are the mere matter from which he crafts his objects of art” (Downing, 191). Thus, the dead female corpses can be interpreted as the desire for African Americans to conquer white dominance and make up for the lack of privilege that they have in the Western society. Within the context of “Monster”, West positions himself as a black male that overcame the white domination as he is alive and white females around him are not; yet he is treated as a ‘monster’ due to the long history of black oppression that arguably projects a violent and aggressive stereotype on African American males in American society. The video portrays women as lifeless corpses and suggests that complete female passivity, lifelessness, and even death can be erotic. Such objectification of women is clearly problematic and is precisely what caused the final version of the video to begin with the announcement “The following content is in no way to be interpreted as misogynistic or negative towards any group of people. It is an art piece and shall be taken as such.” (Soderberg) However, one can argue that Kanye, as an aware consumer of culture himself, is pointing to a bigger issue of female objectification in our society at large. The modelesque white women draped on couches are fetishized not just by the video ‘monsters’, but by the monstrous consumer culture: they are dressed in expensive-looking lingerie, some are wearing jewellery, their nails are perfectly manicured and they generally serve as decorations to a particular scene, rather than as an active part of it (Figure 2, 3). Arguably, this is the artist’s vision of the modern society, where women are still underpaid, frequently sexually harassed and constantly bombarded with advertisement that provokes physical self-obsession. Brian Jarvis in his article Monsters Inc.: Serial Killers and Consumer Culture describes the importance of mannequins as “a crucial symbolic function” (Jarvis, 336). He states that they “epitomize the ideal of 1980s body fascism: tall, youthful, slim, impervious to wrinkles, scars and blemishes, untouched by illness and aging” (Jarvis, 336). Walter Benjamin in his book The Arcades Project describes the mannequin as “the model for imitation… Just as the much-admired mannequin has detachable parts, so fashion encourages the fetishist fragmentation of the living body . . . the woman mimics the mannequin and enters history as a dead object.” (Benjamin, 78) Therefore the fetishized images of dead women are merely a projection of consumerist society that we live in: females throughout past two centuries were the primary target of fashion and beauty advertising. This continuous bombardment by images and messages in various media outlets “aimed to promote an anxious policing of female body. The imperative was to manufacture that sense of inadequacy and self-dissatisfaction which is the essential psychological prerequisite for luxury purchases.” (Jarvis, 333) The white female smoking a cigarette (Figure 4) echoes the ‘heroin chic’ movement in modeling in the early 1990s: borderline anorexic, the girl is wearing dark make-up that covers up her inner beauty and does not let one see what is under the face she draws on. The woman looks confident, yet arguably, she is still a victim of consumerism and a lifestyle that advertising agencies are telling her to live. Female vampires in the video also echo the overarching condemnation of consumer-driven societies – it is common to use vampirism as a metaphor for capitalism. Jarvis traces parallels to Marx’s vampirism comparisons: ‘‘Capital is dead labour which, vampire-like, lives by sucking living labour, and lives the more, the more labour it sucks.’ (Marx, 342)
Black females in the video are contrasted to white women, as they are evil, cannibalizing and aggressive demons and savages. Although such depictions are reminiscent of historical racism and prejudice, one could argue that West has consciously played into the idea of racial segregation in his video. In the post-civil rights era mass media is encouraged to place black women as the subjects of race-gendered prejudices that are rooted in the history of oppression. The artist is therefore perpetuating the ideals of white supremacy: as black women are relegated to the background, and left to their own monstrosity, white females are the victims of hyper-sexualisation and eroticism, while they are still privileged by their race. Throughout Kanye West’s “Monster” video, the representation of women is conflicting and complex. Although the clip was regarded by many as racism and misogynistic, West has produced a piece of art that is provoking and sparks discussions on racism, sexual oppression and consumer vampirism. Sexualisation of women in the video revives racism and generally degrades females in general; being lifeless in the clip is a parallel to being silent in reality, be it regarding female sexuality, objectification of women, or addiction to consumerism that has projected norms on females for over a century now. Instead of condemning West’s video, critics and average viewers should instead ask themselves a question as to why the overplayed ‘dead women’ concept caused such a rift amongst people. Maybe it is time to readdress the issues of racial segregation and over-sexualisation of females, as the post-feminist and post-civil rights era still evidently has countless issues to tackle on its agenda.

American Dream - Death of a Salesman

...The play Death of a Salesman greatly portrays a specific ideology in regards to values, dreams, goals, and success in our consumer-driven society. It helps showcase the American dream that society tends to strive for even in the early 1900’s (the play is set in the 1940’s). That dream of being a successful business person or vendor. As well as the theory that image and physical attributes are most important to gaining fruition. Willy Loman plays a man in his sixties who has strived for this American dream for over 30 years but realistically has failed miserably on his goal in life – a wealthy salesman like his idol Dave Singleman (a fellow who could make a fortune selling without even leaving his hotel room). He spends his entire life in fallacy starving for that success. Plenty of individuals in society search for this similar success in life and career. They may spend there whole lives trying to fall into the category of an “American Success” . This may lead them to never knowing what true happiness really feels like. When searching for something that was never intended to be leads to inevitable unhappiness. One can’t find something that was never really there. Near the end of the play Biff states “He had all the wrong dreams. All, all wrong; he never knew who he was”. This is a very true statement. Willy along with many other people in this world follow the wrong dreams just because they see fit as being successful. Willy quoted: “realized the selling was the greatest career...

...The Effects of hip hop/rap Music on The Younger Generation Today The dynamic era of hip hop emerged in the 1970s through the streets of Bronx, New York City. Now twenty five years old and still counting, the world of hip hop is at a new level. Lil’ Wayne, Kanye West, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, and Plies are just some of today’s biggest icons in the world of hip hop. Having record hitting tracks that jump off the charts, these rappers are definitely the image the younger generation looks up to. Though, having these amazing tracks, these same iconic figures are said to be the cause of our teenagers heading down the road of destruction. The effects of these lyrics on the teenage society are said to provoke violence, foul language, and enhanced sexual behavior. To begin, the effect of hip hop or rap music on the younger generation today has encouraged youth to become more violent and aggressive. Ever since the rise of rap music, teens have been turning to music to help solve their problems. However, this music cannot be helpful but very destructive. Encouraging raging acts of violence, these lyrics influence and damage the minds of children, teens and young adults. For instance, rapper Plies states, “Don't tell me shit about what them niggas said, Them niggas just raping, Fuck niggas be bluffing, Killers make shit happen,” in his track called Naan Nigga. The breakdown of these lyrics: It does not matter what another individual states about one, if a person is “real” one must make violent...

Thrasymachus, Socrates, and Justice

...From book one of the Republic of Plato we find various renditions of what specifically justice is. Socrates begins the conversation of justice with an elder statesman by the name of Cephalus and furthers the discussion with the son of Cephalus, Polemarchus. Socrates is seemingly “toying” with or having fun at the disposal of Polemarchus by challenging his argument and every point and he identifies various inconsistencies in the stories of both men regarding justice. By now the story turns to Thrasymachus which is where this paper begins. I will attempt to dissect Thrasymachus’ s argument and demonstrate where Socrates finds his argument lacking. During the course of book we hear various meanings from various characters regarding the true meaning of justice; Thrasymachus seems to take the view of a pessimist regarding the topic. Both Cephalus and Polemarchus are rather defeated in their arguments with Socrates and are unable to adequately provide Socrates with a satisfactory answer regarding what justice is. Thrasymachus enters the conversation and is seemingly annoyed or upset about the discourse between Socrates and Polemarchus. Moreover, Thrasymachus reverses the question to Socrates by demanding to know what his version of justice is. Thrasymachus seems to be frustrated with the audacity of Socrates of questioning everyone without providing and real answers himself. Thrasymachus then asserts his view of justice and in so doing, questions...

This 13 song collection that he put together in, "Khalifa," shows once again that Wiz is planning on staying authentic and is going back to what made him one of the most respected hip-hop icons in the game. As expected, with this album Khalifa didn't shy away from any, "stoner," references. But, what you also get from this album is album quality, and motivational anthems as well. Good Life Research Paper

...When my alarm rings every morning at 6:30, I know I have two choices; continue to slumber in my dreams or wake up and chase them. The good life starts with the desire to jump out of bed every morning with your chin up and spirits high to take on whatever may be thrown your way. It does not matter what type of car you drive, or what your wearing. The good life is based upon striving to reach the goals you set for yourself, performing kind, compassionate acts for others and making sure you leave behind an honorable legacy. In my mind, the good life consists of having knowledge, happiness and justice in one's soul. Knowledge is a key ingredient in leading a good life, because knowledge is power. No man woman or child will change the world by sitting on the couch watching cartoons. To make a difference, one has to not only read countless books and study hard but to pursue a number of opportunities with passion and desire. There can be no opportunity too minuscule or too broad. Wether it be reaching out to a stranger to learn from them or having a professor provide a life experience that can prepare me for a solution to a problem that I may face. Happiness stems from virtue, or morally good behavior and character. Recognizing the good in life, wether you are living "the good life" or not is the way to be happy. By others standards, some people are living "the good life" but are not recognizing the good, therefore they will never be happy. Everyone has positives at their disposal...

B: I can say my wife and I have finally found contentment here in the country after years of frustration with the city and suburban living. A: Could you talk about your life here? B: Well, it is a self-reliant sort of life, and a satisfying life too. We grow nearly all of our fruits and vegetables. Our hens keep us in eggs. In the summer we canoe on the river, go picnicking in the woods and take long bicycle rides, and we ski and skate in the winter. We get excited about sunsets. A: How nice it is! It’s really a desirable life. Then have you encountered any /some difficulty? B: Yes. The good life can get pretty tough (15). In the first winter, we were buried under five feet of snow from December through March. One storm after another blasted huge drifts up against the house and barn (33). When spring came, it brought a flood. The river overflowed, covering much of our land for weeks (37). A: You are so busy, then do you have time for writing? Menahknow

...End Time Music Now Music has always been an outlet for artists to express themselves and a way to reach the masses. Music is defined as, “An art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color.” It has a way of touching people from various backgrounds, ethnicities, and religions on an intensely deep emotional level. It is rare to find one who does not have a favorite song or at least a few that they know they can relate to, or that play when they are happy or sad. According to Ezekiel 28:14, before Satan’s banishment from Heaven, he was the director of music, therefore if anyone is to know anything regarding music it would be Lucifer himself. Soon after, he devised a strategy for revenge against God to use secular music as a tool to persuade those of “the world,” as Christians would call them, to follow him. His strategy was lived out through the influence of the Illuminati. Illuminati, means “Enlightenment” and their god is Lucifer, also known as, “The Light Bearer.” Their goals are to create a new world order and manipulate and influence the masses by occult practices. They are said to be, “the Top players on the International playground belonging to thirteen of the wealthiest families in the world,” this is including the Rockefeller’s and the Kennedy’s (Tapestra). Many Biblical texts in and outside of Revelation relate to Satan’s plan to conform the music industry for his work....
