Katniss Everdeen was a sixteen year old girl that lived with her mother and her little sister Prim in District 12. Katniss’s family depended on her to hunt for food ever since her father died in a mine explosion when she was only eleven years old. At the reaping, the mayor gave a speech about how the government in North America fell and the country of Panem took over. There was a war between the Capitol and the districts, and the Capitol won. To remind the districts not to rebel, the Capitol created the Hunger Games. Every year, two tributes (one girl and one boy) from each of the twelve districts are chosen to fight to the death in an arena and only one person can win. The mayor then introduced Haymitch, District 12's only living Hunger …show more content…
Katniss searched for Peeta and eventually found him injured from his fight with Cato. Katniss took care of him and soon realized that playing up the romance can help them get gifts from sponsors. Eventually, Cato is the only other living tribute and Katniss and Peeta defeat him. They thought they finally won but the announcer came back and said that the rules changed back: only one of them can win. Katniss and Peeta refused to kill each other, so they decided to eat poisonous berries. Just as they were about to eat them, the announcer came back once more to declare them as the winners of the Hunger Games. When they came out of the arena, Haymitch warned them that they were in danger. The Capitol took their stunt with the poisonous berries as a sign of rebellion. The Capitol thought that they were trying to outsmart them. They had to keep up the starcrossed lovers act to keep from getting punished by the Capitol. Peeta did love Katniss and got angry and hurt when he found out that Katniss didn't really love him back, but as the train got to District 12, they took each other's hands and put on a smile for the

In the arena, Peeta pretends to join the group of violent and practiced “career” tributes, while Katniss befriends young Rue. Rue is killed and Peeta injured; Katniss finds and nurses him. The Hunger Games Compared to "The Heroes Journey"

...The Hero’s Journey: A Summary of the Steps. These steps begins with the character in just his/her ordinary world and ending with that character, having gone through the most traumatic moment if their life, returning home and achieving what they set out to do. The book The Hunger Games, written by Suzan Collins, is a wonderful story about a girl who becomes a hero in a short amount of time and doesn’t really realize it. In The Hunger Games, the main character, Katniss Everdeen, experience most of these steps. One of the first steps in “The Hero’s Journey” is Call to Adventure. This step is the point in a person’s life when he/she is first given notice that everything is going to change, whether they know it or not. Katniss begins this step when she takes Primrose’s, her sister, place as the female tribute of District 12. “I volunteer! I volunteer as tribute.” (Page 22). Once she said that she realized that her whole life was about to change because she entered the Hunger Games. Soon after she volunteers, she meets up with her mom and Prim. She gives them her final goodbye as she says to her mom “You can’t clock out and leave Prim on her own. There’s no me now to keep you both alive.” (Page 35). Katniss knows she won’t make it out of there alive so she tells her mom to take care of Prim. This yet another example of how she knows her life is about to change forever. “Here’s some advice. Stay Alive” (Page 56). This quote is said by Haymitch Abernathy, Katniss and Peeta’s mentor. He...

Hunger Games

...Collins Plot Summary The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic North America, known as the new country of “Panem”, with a government known as, “The Capitol”- a metropolis, that exercises political control over its society. The Capitol has an annual event, “The Hunger Games” to remind the citizens of Panem of the “Dark Days”, and to ensure that they never return. The story begins in a poor, coal-mining district, following a young 16-year old girl, Katniss Everdeen and her fellow tribute, Peetah Mellark. Critical Review In “The Hunger Games”, “Katniss Everdeen”, who was played by Jennifer Lawrence, was portrayed exceptional well. Not only does Jennifer’s appearance resemble all of those of Katniss, her attitude does as well. Instantly, you find yourself attached to Katniss and her family, as you feel sympathetic towards their poverty and situation. After you see Katniss volunteer as tribute for her sister at “The Reaping”, you automatically set your hopes high for her to win the games. Throughout the film, you feel all of the same emotions as Katniss, her fear at the beginning of the games, her miss-trust in everyone around her, and her relief when finally winning the games. “Peetah Mellark”, played by Josh Hutcherson, I do not think was played very well. Throughout the film I could not get a grasp of what Peetah was thinking or feeling. During “The Reaping” you could see the fear in his eyes but could not feel it. As the story mostly follows Katniss I did not get...

Independent Novel: the Hunger Games

...Olivia Mokler Mr. Burgner English II 5 April, 2012 Independent Novel: Journal #1 Summary- As punishment for a previous rebellion against the Capitol in which a 13th district was destroyed, one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each district are selected by annual lottery to participate in the Hunger Games, an event in which the participants (or "tributes") must fight in an outdoor arena controlled by the Capitol, until only one remains. The story follows 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen, a girl from District 12 who volunteers in place of her sister, Primrose, for the 74th annual Hunger Games in place of her younger sister, Primrose. Also selected from District 12 is Peeta Mellark, a baker's son whom Katniss knows from school, and who once gave her bread when her family was starving. If she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity, and life against love. In the terrifying events that follow, Katniss must marshal all her skills to stay alive, and all her emotions to remain a caring human being in the face of the Games. Quote Analysis- “Look how we take your children and sacrifice them and there’s nothing you can do. If you lift a finger, we will destroy every last one of you. Just as we did in District Thirteen.” Taking the kids from the districts, forcing them to kill one another while people watch, is the Capitol’s way of reminding the districts how their in control, and we are at their mercy. How little chance...

The Life

...The Hunger Games: Action-film feminism is catching fire  Lisa Schwarzbaum Burning up Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen is both strong and vulnerable – a new kind of action heroine who has powered The Hunger Games: Catching fire to a $158m US debut. (Lionsgate) Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen is a new type of female action film icon, and moviegoers should be very excited about that, writes Lisa Schwarzbaum. As Catching Fire ignites on movie screens around the world, this is what we know about the 21st Century heroine called Katniss Everdeen: she is strong but also soft. She is brave but she has doubts. She is a phenomenal fictional creation, yet is real enough that moviegoers can draw inspiration from her values, her resourcefulness, and her very human inner conflicts. And she is played by Jennifer Lawrence, who appears not only to be handling her current duties as Hollywood’s finest model of well-adjusted millennial female stardom but doing so with charm. Everdeen and Lawrence: golden girls both. Personified in Lawrence’s lithe movements and cool, focused gaze, Katniss is a brave, resourceful and independent-minded fighter; but she is also a troubled and vulnerably guilt-ridden human being. Nina Jacobson, the producer of the Hunger Games film franchise, puts it this way: “She is a singular heroine in that the burden of survival weighs on her. She has a ton of survivor’s guilt.  And she keeps surviving.” Girl on fire It is strange that behaving like a well-adjusted...

...CONTEXT Growing up, Suzanne Collins was a military brat. Her father was a career airman in the United States Air Force, as a result, Collins and her siblings—two older sisters and an older brother—moved around frequently, spending time in numerous locations in the eastern United States as well as in Europe. The military, in fact, played a leading role in the family’s history. Collins’s grandfather had served in World War I, her uncle served in World War II, and the year Collins turned six, her father left to serve his own tour in the Vietnam War. War, consequently, was a part of life for Collins, something very real and not just an abstract idea. While her father was gone, she would sometimes see video footage of the war zone on the news, and she recognized that her father was there fighting. Though her father returned after a year, Collins’s connection to war didn’t end. In addition to being a soldier, Collins’s father was also a military historian and a doctor of political science. That knowledge and experiences serving in the Air Force and fighting in Vietnam had a profound effect on his relationships with his children, and he made sure they learned what they could about war. While other girls’ fathers were telling them fairytales, Collins’s father educated her about military history. When the family was moved to Brussels, Belgium, for instance, her father educated her about the region’s violent history and took her on tours of the country’s historic battlefields. Eventually...

...PRACTICAL ACCOUNTING 2 1. Katy Perry developed an interesting idea for marketing sailboats in Death Valley. She interested Lady Gaga in joining her in a partnership. Following the information you have collected relative to their original contribution. Lady Gaga contributed P 30,000 cash, a track of land, and delivery equipment. Katy Perry contributed P 60,000 cash. After giving special consideration to the tax bases of the assets contributed, the relative usefulness of the assets to the partnership versus the problems of finding buyers for the assets and contributing cash, and other such factors, the partners agreed that Katy Perry’s contribution was equal to 40 percent of the partnership’s tangible assets, measured in terms of the fair value of the assets to the partnership. However, since marketing idea originated with Katy Perry, it was agreed that she should receive credit for 50 percent of the recorded capital. Recent sales of land similar to that contributed by Lady Gaga suggest a market value of P 40,000. Likewise, recent sales of delivery equipment similar to that contributed by Lady Gaga suggest P 40,000 as the market value of the equipment. These sales, of course, were not entirely representative of the particular assets contributed by Lady Gaga and therefore may be a better indicator of their relative values than their absolute values. In reflecting on their venture, the partners agree that it is a rather risky affair in respect to anticipated profits...
