Introduction:
The objective of this lab was to witness the change in temperature of cyclohexane with different substances added. The process of phase change is usually being witnessed in the different weather changes we have. When snow begins to fall in the winter it falls as a liquid, starts to freeze from the atmosphere, then fully freezes when it is set on the ground from the winter temperature. It then begins to melt and turn back into a liquid as the temperature begins to heat up, then evaporates as the liquid starts to boil and steam up. (Phase Change, 17). In this experiment, we hypothesized that our trial three with 0.612 grams of benzoic acid would have the greatest effect on temperature change since it held the greatest …show more content…
In trial one, 4.947 grams of cyclohexane was measure out on a scale in a large test tube and was placed in the beaker on the hot plate with a thermocouple that is connected to a LabQuest to collect your data. Once the sample hit 50 °C, we began to record the temperature data on the LabQuest. After the temperature leveled out while it was in the beaker on the hot plate, we then transferred the test tube to a beaker filled with ice water to finish off our data of the temperature change. This process had been continued for the rest of the trials. In trial two, 5.024 grams of cyclohexane was measured out and placed into another large test tube. We measured out 0.300 grams of benzoic acid and poured it into the same large test tube as the cyclohexane, and then began to test the temperature change. In trial three, 0.612 grams of benzoic acid was measured out and placed into are large test tube filled with 4.947 grams of cyclohexane. We then started the process to test the temperature change. In trial four, we tested the temperature change with 4.902 grams of cyclohexane and 0.394 grams of camphor in another large test tube. Although due to a LabQuest error, our trial four did not start to record the temperature change until it reached 60 °C. Trial three had a higher mass at 0.61 grams of benzoic acid than with 0.38 grams of camphor, but had similar reactions between the two. In this experiment the methods could have affected the temperature measured, for instance, the different amounts of substances added to the cyclohexane in each different test tube. The additives of benzoic acid and camphor had a slight difference in the effects on the measured point. In trial three with 0.612 grams of benzoic acid added had the greatest amount of temperature change. As it started to level out after increasing while it was in the heated water, we moved it to the ice water and it had a major decrease in the temperature change. Whereas in trial four with 0.394 grams of camphor, as it was in the heated water it began to increase its temperature like our trial three, but when it was moved to the ice water it began to decrease similar to trial three but started to level out sooner. Although, the effects in trials two and three could have been based off an error that may have happened throughout the experiment.
