Plastic has become pretty much a lifestyle here in America; We use plastic cards to make transactions every day, we’re given plastic bowls and utensils with our lunch and we collect a countless number of plastic bags from our local stores daily. These days, there is so much hoopla about banning these convenient little bags that many of us love. Opposers of these bags claim (or were misled to think) that they are not environmentally responsible. Before we take on a war against these plastic bags with hopes of saving the world one bag at a time, as citizens we should get the facts into perspective about alternatives being advertised before making earth saving decisions. Also, what happened to being presented with choices and choosing the ones we find to be more responsible?
Regularly, you may hear critics stating that yearly a billion bags are not recycled and filling up our landfills. This is in fact true. Plastic bags take . To remedy this problem, has anyone ever asked the question as to why we don’t just find a way to recycle the bags with all the technology available these days? Matter of fact, the truth is that these bags are already recyclable! Plastic bags can be recycled into things like plastic wood which can be used to make backyard decking components, shopping crates, park benches or even more plastic bags. The EPA reported that only 1% of these bags are being recycled? As responsible citizens we should all get together to push for new laws that encourage the manufacturers who can use this plastic to do do so rather than piling it up in the landfills.
Consumers have been misled to associate these new thick recyclable bags or paper bags as a mean of going “green”. Stores like Whole Foods print big bold messages on their paper bags stating that they are “REUSABLE RECYCLABLE”. Those facts are not to be refuted at all; however we must all be

The Selkbag was created in 2006 by Rodrigo Alonso, as part of a family of innovative, fun, and highly useful products. The name Selkbag was inspired by the Selk'nam natives of Tierra del Fuego, Chile, people who dressed sparingly despite the cold climate of Patagonia. Selkbag is a snowsuit and sleeping bag mixed into one, that allows for ease of mobility while sleeping, warmth during the day and night, and less things to carry for a traveller. I have created a Selkbag brand logo, shown to the right, that consists of the letters SB, which stand for Selkbag. The letters are in gold because it shows how Selkbag is the very best of its kind. Rites Of Passage In The Medicine Bag And The Apache Girl

...The two stories, “The Medicine Bag” and The Apache Girl, presented two different rites of passages. Even though they are two different rituals, they have some similarities. In “The Medicine Bag”, Grandpa traveled a long way to see Martin just to pass on the medicine bag tradition before he dies. During the Lakota rite of passage, the oldest male in the family will receive the medicine bag. In The Apache Girl, Dachina went through a long ritual to become a strong woman, and get her woman name, which was Morning Star Feather. During the Lakota rite of passage, the oldest male in the family will receive the medicine bag. First, the person who currently has he medicine bag will travel to the person they are passing it to. After arriving, he must give the bag to the oldest male child in he family. Lastly, the child must remove two things from the bag and replace them. After the bag is the child’s, he must never open it until its time to pass it on again. During the Apache rite of passage, thirteen-year-old girls will participate in the ritual that will transform them into strong women. Their family members will create medicine for them, and make sure they get enough sleep and enough to eat before the ritual. The ritual begins with the rising of the morning star. Southwest Airlines

... Kelley said, communication is the biggest key in being a leader. Kelly, who previously served as CFO, is an accountant by trade. When he became chairman and CEO, he said he found it to be very different than being a financial technician. I think that Gary Kelly is a very good leader because he listens to what his employees have to say and really values their opinion. I don’t think many CEO’s can say that. He knows that in running a successful company, one has to keep employees happy and make them keep wanting to work. Employees are the backbone of your company, they are the ones who keep the company going; sure the executives have to make some big time decisions but for the most part the employees help run the company. Gary Kelley has kept Southwest traditions by the low fares and great customer service. That is what made Southwest what it is today. He then made a decision that I think changed Southwest in the best way, by making bags fly for free. All of the other airlines make you pay to check a bag. This new strategy greatly gained them customers. Southwest has always been known for its point-to-point flights, but in recent years airports like Houston Hobby and Dallas Love Field have become de facto hubs. Southwest had evolved over the years, it flies longer routes, it flies...

Chip Anyone?

...acted out on a Friday March 27, 2015. I started my day out like I typically do. Prepped myself for heading to the gym. I start my workout around 9am and it can last anywhere between 45 to 70 minutes. On this day I did my usual strength-training exercises which lasted about 45 minutes. I was too excited and could not wait and act out my behavior. I headed to my locker, grabbed the BIG bag of chips and headed to the cardio room. I eye-balled the empty treadmill between two people. I felt very nervous because this is not what people do at the gym. More than that, I do not like sticking out of the crowd. As I approached the machine with my music still running through my earbuds (this was more to motivate me to keep up with this act) I jumped on the machine. I set the treadmill to a walking setting and cracked the bag of Doritos® open and began to munch away. The first minute or-so I was absorbed with my nervousness and did not pay much attention to anything or anyone that was not attached to my machine. I was already in the act so I finally started to look around nonchalantly while eating my chips and somewhat rocking out to the music while exercising. I noticed the two people next to me were trying to not give me attention. But curiosity is something that over-rides many impulses. I began to really feel more comfortable with this act. The lady next to me glanced at me and I made eye contact. I gave a head nod and gestured with my bag as to ask, “Do you want some?” She actually responded...

The Price for Plastic

...Composition I 30 October 2014 The True Price for Plastic Did you know that plastic bags are one of the largest sources of litter in the world? According to research discussed on “How Stuff Works”, plastic bags can take anywhere from two hundred to a thousand years to break down. They also give off toxic chemicals when burned, so burning is a hazardous way to rid of the material. Because of this it is difficult to safely dispose of plastic. According to the same site, less than 1% of plastic bags used in the US are recycled due to recycling costs being much higher than the recovered plastic is worth. States are attempting to find new strategies to reduce the number of plastic carry-out bags from grocery stores and other retail outlets to help with the issues arising. They believe regulating the use of bags can lower harmful impacts to oceans, rivers, lakes and the wildlife that inhabits them. Reducing bag use can also relieve pressure on landfills and waste management. One of the methods being experimented with is charging for the plastic bags given out at grocery stores. This is definitely something stores should try to help out both economically and environmentally. Economically, charging for plastic could help the world in a few ways. It would profit the community, it would put more money into recycling as more people buy reusable bags, and it could cut costs on manufacturing these bags, making it possible to put money elsewhere. Charging for plastic would create an extra...

...Mom had the day off because she wanted to stay home and help with our family business. When I woke up I felt very sluggish and sick to my stomach. Mom told me just to try to make it through the day, and to go to the nurse if it got any worse. When I went to school I tried my best to still be positive and said it was just a bug and kept doing my work. I went to lunch just like always, but I didn’t really have an appetite to eat. I put my lunch back in my bag and continued to talk to my best friend to keep my mind off of not feeling well. We went back to class and finished the rest of our day. I packed up my bag, slid my jacket on and walked to the bus to go home. I went to my normal seat and found that my seat partner went home so I had the seat to myself. I set my bag on the seat and put my head on it. I picked my feet up and curled up on the remainder of the seat. The bus started moving and I dozed off after the first stop. My best friend,...

His hair was wind-tousled and his fingers had gone numb, but he’d made it back relatively dry and in one piece — and not a moment too soon, either. A thunderstorm had been biding its time off the coast of Whale Island, clouds rolling in like high tide. Judging from the deep, threatening rumbles, it was going to be a bad one.
