1. UWS Parramatta Campus Tour

1) The design and architecture orphanage is quite deceptive. Through the contrast of relatively smaller windows increasing as the building ascends, the building as whole is perceived to much larger visually than what it is in physical space; essentially creating a spatial optical illusion.
Through observing the differing windows architecture among the psychiatric ward and also the orphan school, the purpose of the rooms and people who used those rooms can be identified as quite different. In example of this is the size of the windows as well as the shape of the window.
Another important room that as observed, was the common room, located in both the orphanage and the asylum. The features of these common rooms were the large and bold skylights; all of which were aligned in the middle of the buildings, proving the room with stream of natural light. There was architectural importance attachment to this. Most rooms of this era had the skylight located on top impeding the pathway of such a busy corridor and avoidance of the naked flame.

Those patients who were housed in the asylum were divided according to their personality and as such were split into two groups; those who were extroverted and loud and those who were introverted and quiet.
The quieter patients were accommodated together, due to the lack of fear shared among guards because of the quieter and less psychotic personalities. The patients were granted the privilege of having large windows with sashes, allowing patient’s access to open windows. However, the louder patients were kept in rooms by themselves, with the windows being quite and opening only slightly vertically.

3. Experiment Farm Cottage

i) The object selected is called the “Egg Holder”

ii) The sketch is attached on hard copy

iii) The Egg Holder was an old way to hold eggs and to keep them cool. The bowl was filled with sand to the top and the eggs were placed inside the sand, being wholly covered. This shows how people kept things fresh and cool before there was any refrigeration available.

4. Parramatta Architecture Walk

i) ‘Mansfield’ at address 46 Grose St Parramatta is an example of a house that is symmetrical.

ii) Mansfield architecture has been heavily influenced by late Georgian Architecture. The 2 chimneys on either side of the house and the presence of the windows on either side of the front door indicate its symmetry. The door is strategically placed in the middle to allow for symmetry as well. The roof is symmetrical and it was to be cut in half, it would look exactly the same. (The sketch is attached.)

iii) The house at address 42 Sorrell St is an example of a house that is asymmetrical in style.

iv) It was part of movement that The “Arts and Crafts” movement has greatly influenced the architecture of this house. There is no symmetry as the windows and the doors do not allow this.

v) 14 Isabella St and 56 Sorrell St are the two houses that have embellishment on them. There is the cast iron that is attached and also a garage that was not there. These embellishments have been added to allow the house to be more attractive and more practical as well.

iii) The river and the topography of the land are main natural features of the Parramatta area. The river would have been the centre of the town and the main area for trade to occur.

iv) The heritage of Parramatta reveals quite a significant amount of natural landscape. One of the main features of Parramatta is and was Lennox Bridge. The Bridge was constructed between 1836 and 1839. The Bridge was built at the time for ‘traders’ to come into Parramatta and make their business allowing the early settlers to take advantage and trade with those that would come to trade. Flooding was also a regular occurrence as is also seen in today’s day and age. The bridge was used to help, when flooding occurred allowing residents to cross over but more importantly animals and other cattle. Buildings/structures were built further away from the water because of its common flooding from time to time.

Keeping A Gratitude Journal

...Although this past week has been a roller coaster, keeping a gratitude journal has resulted in me being more grateful for the things in my life. It's easy to get caught up in a daily grind and not realize the factors that impact your life positively, especially if those factors have been present for a long time. For example, one common theme of my journal entries was the weather. I love the sound of rain and the freshness of the air after it's rained, but sometimes it becomes too much of a hassle for me to truly appreciate it. Negative life experiences over the years have also made me more pessimistic of a person and in result has hindered my ability to stop and truly appreciate what I have in life. Blackfish Film Analysis

...these animals endure. In the past, the documentary film Blackfish (2013) exposes SeaWorld and Sealand of the Pacific for their harsh methods of training and keeping orcas and other aquatic mammals. This film opens the eyes of its viewers to the cruelty that orcas are experiencing from living in these enclosures their whole lives. Before I viewed the film Blackfish, I had only heard about it from friends and acquaintances who have. They said that it changed their whole view of SeaWorld, and for the most part, everyone was against the training of animals for use in shows. For the past few years I have heard mention here and there of the controversy surrounding the film so I was very excited when I finally experienced it for myself. Besides the film, I generally do not care much for animal rights and things of that nature. Though I would never personally cause an animal unnecessary harm or suffering, you will never find me donating or volunteering my time to the organizations such as The Humane...

Ict Notes

...connected with each other.  * However, ICT can also keep families apart. Imagine today's family gathered in the kitchen for dinner. Maybe the TV is on, a laptop on the kitchen counter and everyone has their phone with them. Mom and dad are keeping an eye on emails even though the work day is technically over. So this family is physically together, but they are not totally focused on and paying attention to each other. They are at least partially attentive to a ping or a beep indicating that there is a new text message, email or missed call. * So how can we use ICT to our advantage - for increased productivity, reduced stress, and better work+life fit? We'll need our organizations to pitch in by providing guidelines about expectations and strategies for effectively managing our devices. And we will need to confer with our managers and colleagues to figure out how our work groups can use ICT to promote collaboration and working smarter.  *  technology is the best way of learning because it's a convenient way to search a lot of academic information and technology makes me know my goals * A major change has occurred in personal communication and society due to the influence of the information technology. Learning Team

...LEARNING TEAM CHARTER – TEAM “A” |Course Title |GEN/195 FOUNDATIONS OF UNIVERSITY STUDIES 2 Team Ground Rules and Guidelines What are the general expectations for all members of the team? To at least acknowledge one another and respond even if it is ‘OK’. We understand how chaotic life, work school, etc. can be but what we all must remember is we decided to attend college (again). Keeping that in mind, contact with one another is a must also. We know we all are pretty much acquaintance and it might be a little difficult to do but to build a great team we need to start a foundation. When it comes to turning in assignments as a team we think it will benefit everyone if we summit to our thread at least a day in advance so one of the other team member (or leader of the week) can put together a draft for all of us to turn in or just decide what name gets what question. We’ve never been much of a team player but this is a learning experience for me and probably other students. We should all remember that we have our team depending on us to pull our weight and make the right choices. 4 Expectations for Time Management and Involvement (Participation, communication with the team, accessibility, etc.) Each individual person should be required to post a general update once during the week in order to keep communication strong. In addition, everyone is...

It Is Easier to Maintain Health in the Modern World Than in the Past.

...Health is important to human beings, since only by keeping a healthy body can people do thing whatever they want. As the technology is progressing, the awareness of people, and the occurrences of more and more organic foods, I strongly believe that it is easier to maintain health in the modern world than in the past. First of all, with the development of technology has advanced, more and more food supplements sold in the market, such as vitamin A, C, E or omega 3, 5, 7…etc. Hence, it is easier to complement the nutrition in the body. Take me for instance. I always eat vitamin C and fish oil every day in case that I do not obtain enough nutrition from foods. Moreover, the medical equipment is much better than the old times. Even if people have injuries or infect serious disease in the modern world, body can be cured by taking the medicine or using the medical equipment. Hence, it is better to say that maintaining health is easier now than the past. Secondly, the occurrences of organic foods made human beings more easily to keep a healthy body. For instance, my neighbor Jean is the wholesaler of organic food. She often gives my family a lot of vegetables, fruits, and eggs that are planted or fed on without using pesticides. Besides, there are many super markets that only sold organic foods instead, such as Trader Joe’s. Therefore, it is easy to maintain health, for organic foods are simple to acquire everywhere. Finally, it is rather to say that people are more...

Immigration

...growing powerful nation was built up on the countless backs of undocumented immigrants. Beginning with the first settlers emigrating from England in hopes of finding freedom from religious persecution, to the countless South American immigrants only hoping to look and find a way for a better life for themselves and their children. President Obama’s illegal immigration reform is not celebrated but applauded by its many supporters in that it not only holds illegal immigrants accountable for years of unpaid taxes, not only helping the national economy but also giving immigrants a chance in citizenship presented that they pay off all their taxes, also keeping the American dream alive in guaranteeing immigrants who have been in the U.S for longer than five years, in ensuring no deportation given a clean background check and also keeping these hard working American Immigrants families alive. In his most recent national address, President Obama argued that this nation’s immigration system is “broken” and further proposed a strengthening of our border security, streamlining legal immigration, earned citizenship, and the exploitation of the undocumented worker by hiring employers. Although I agree with President Obama’s ideas of addressing the outdated and dysfunctional migratory system, I believe his proposal will bring forth more harm than good. It imposes stringent requirements on illegal immigrants without providing any defined guarantee of citizenship. The reform proposes that all...

Medical Records

...Medical record keeping has change in the last couple of decades. In the past patients records were kept in a file on paper taking up excessive room. In the past, paper charts were the only means of keeping a patient’s medical diagnoses documented. Some of these charts are still used today in healthcare facilities, lately; there have been great advancements in the medical field involving the creation and maintenance of patient records. There are electronic medical record computer systems and internet-enabled doctor correspondence methods. All of this is to make the experience better for the patient and easier for the medical provider. In 2009, the 111th Congress allocated $19 billion of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, toward the creation of an electronic health record (EHR) for each person in the United States by 2014. The recent debate over EHRs has focused largely on the economic, logistical, and political consequences of implementing such a system; however, the country should also contemplate the ethical ramifications of EHRs. Addressing these concerns requires the application of ethical principles such as autonomy, justice, beneficence/non-maleficence, and privacy and confidentiality. The use of electronic technology for the management of health information presents expanded security risks due to increased capacity and mass storage. A single breach in security could lead to the unauthorized disclosure of private health information. Both health care organizations...

...because dedicating my time to a nearby college means taking away from my children’s needs. There are many people out there that don’t take the time to teach their children the basics but my almost three year knows her ABC’s, numbers to twenty, a variety of animals and can write some letters. I feel that these past nine weeks have taught me to stay motivated so I can complete my degree. It has taken some time to adapt to taking classes online but it’s always good to challenge yourself with something new. Attending classes anytime during the day seven days a week along with help from my graduation team is going to help me achieve my goals. There are advantages and disadvantages to distant learning, but what makes it so manageable is not being afraid to ask for help when needed. I can contact my instructor whether it’d be through email or picking up the telephone. One disadvantage is for the students who are used to being in a classroom setting, learning best by seeing and hearing the instructor. It may take a little while longer for these students to adapt. I feel that being able to review feedback and assignments that have been posted has been really helpful throughout these past weeks, along with discussions with the other students. Being able to discuss with other students whether in the chat room off topic or in the classroom makes it easier because I can see other people’s views. Appomattox Statue Research Paper

...The Appomattox Statue - Stay vs. Move? It has recently been debated in Alexandria whether or not the infamous statue of a southern soldier known as the Appomattox Statue should remain in its prominent location on Washington and Prince Streets, or be moved to a less visible location in front of the Alexandria Lyceum. I believe that this statue holds with it decades of our country’s history and should not be taken down to make people feel better about our country’s past. The Appomattox Statue should stay in its current location due to historical, financial, and logistical reasons. The strongest argument for keeping the statue in its present location is that we take pride in our past and should not rewrite it. Alexandria’s youth and tourists...

Electronic Health Records

...Abstract I am a complete advocate for switching to computer-based medical records. This is done completely electronically, versus the other paper method of dealing with medical records. Using hard copies of patient records are still commonly used in hospitals and doctor’s offices, but are quickly becoming a thing of the past. Healthcare professionals are trading in the traditional pen and notepad for electronic data entry and storage devices. Keeping records electronically allows all healthcare professionals involved to have access to all of the patient’s medical history, status of immunizations and lab results as well as x-rays. A record of the patient’s known allergies and medications, and billing and personal information such as height and weight. Electronic Health Records The submission of medical health records electronically has been helping the medical field, hospitals and doctors offices greatly since being implemented. Using electronic health records offers much better continuity, communication, coordination and accountability of patient records. I read in an article about EHRs and sums up what people using the computerized electronic health records feel, it seems that building a virtualization of EHRs can be very expensive, but ultimately works well. And does everything that they need it to. Hudson, NY-based Columbia Memorial Hospital has used an EHR to support its clinical works system since early 2010, one that serves 26 clinical locations and...
