Introduction
Career College XXX is a “for-profit” vocational college with nine campuses located in California. It is part of the larger XXX Colleges Group which has eleven additional campuses in seven other cities in the Western United States. XXX College has a variety of career choices in the medical and technical fields, and also offers degree programs in the online environment. Prior to 2010, XXX College was known as WWW Career College, and was originally established in California in 1967 under the name NW College of Medical Assistants and Dental Assistants. Over the years, the company expanded and underwent a handful ownership and name changes. During that time, they received both national accreditation from the foremost leaders in education for the various programs they offer, in addition to regional accreditation by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACCJC-WASC). The then Western Career College was acquired by Big University, Inc. in 2008 and underwent its most recent name change in 2010 to XXX College.
Description of problem
Even though XXX is owned by Big University, Inc. and is part of the XXX Colleges Group, it still operates autonomously, with a few exceptions in regards to Human Resources and employee benefits. As part of their accreditation process, XXX has developed a communication policy to ensure there is adequate flow of information in their organization, and that information flows both up and down the organizational hierarchy. I began my career with XXX in 2010 as a part-time instructor. In 2012, I was promoted to Program Director and now supervise the instructors who teach our program. My promotion involved moving to a new campus location. Upon my arrival at the new campus, I was immediately impressed with the level of communication the organization encourages on a

An Examination of Lsi Circumplex

...Running head: DAU ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE INVENTORY An Examination of the Defense Acquisition University Organizational Culture Inventory Circumplex Ernest Fagan Keller Graduate School of Management Jodi Harrell, M.A, M.S. MGMT 591 Aug 13, 2012 DAU ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE INVENTORY Corporate OCI Styles This paper will discuss the OCI survey results of my workplace, Defense Acquisition University (DAU) and reflect on the validity of those results. DAU provides acquisition and government contracting training and certification to Department of Defense personnel. Not surprisingly, the primary OCI style was Humanistic-Encouraging. We as instructors go to great lengths to ensure students are given ample opportunity to succeed. We stay after class, provide assistance with their lesson plans, and deliver the material in a way that suits different styles of learning. I am particularly partial to making charts and drawing flowcharts of contracting processes to foster comprehension, interpretation, and application. Each class is also divided into teams. This helps simulate the actual workplace environment. Contracting specialists do not work alone. The need input from the customer, confirmation of funding from the budget office, and steady feedback from the vendor during contract performance. That is highlighted by the Affiliative score. ...

Mgmt 591 Discussion: Comparing on-Line Class to a Team/Group

...Comparison of On-line Class to a Team MGMT 591 Keller In this response I will discuss social loafing, group development and comparing our class to a team or group. Social loafing occurs when people work less hard in groups than they would individually. An effective team/group according to the text is one that achieves a high level of task performance, member satisfaction and team viability. One of the Keller student mottos: "you get out what you put in" relates to avoiding social loafing in the online community. Ways to social loaf: 1. wait until others post in a discussion to avoid doing any of the initial foot work--then you can just comment on someone else's work and still engage in the discussion. 2. Only read what the professor writes and answer his/her queries and questions, avoiding interacting with the other team members and thereby not really gaining anything through the process of discussion. 3. avoid reading the textbook on a deep and intimate level by cruising around the message board and picking up the application of the material--as you know this is how you will be tested anyhow! The text uses the show Survivor as an example. One contestant who wasn't very physically able is simply to mind the fire overnight, but doesn't and sleeps instead, knowing that one of the others will "cover" for him anyway. Although the tasks gets done, his social loafing jeopardized his role and eventually his respect by the others and he was voted out of the tribe. The...

Wal-Mart Research

...Library Research for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. DeVry University Keller Graduate School of Management MGMT 591 November 24, 2013 Introduction of Organization: Wal-Mart is an American multinational retail corporation and the world’s second largest public corporation (Wal-Mart 2013). Founded by the Sam Walton, this company runs a chain of large discount department stores, and warehouse stores (Wal-Mart 2013). With over two million employees this company is worth approximately $446 billion. To this day Wal-Mart remains a private employer and is still run by the Walton Family (Wal-Mart 2013). Description of Problem: With more than two million employees worldwide, Wal-Mart has faced major lawsuits in regards to workforce. Employees are generally dissatisfied due to low wages, poor working conditions, and inadequate healthcare (Hart 2006). Furthermore, Wal-Mart faces sex discrimination allegations against their female employees in terms of promotions (Wexler 2011). This in-turn has caused Wal-Mart to be scrutinized constantly in regards to how they treat their employees. These issues have caused low job satisfaction amongst all employees. In my paper, I would like to look at employee motivation and how it can be applied to remedy this low employee satisfaction Wal-Mart is experiencing. Additionally, I want to look at attitudes and job satisfaction and what steps Wal-Mart can take to make sure that their employees are happy. I want to compare Wal-Mart’s top competitor,...

...Leadership and Organizational Behavior Case Study 1 “The Forgotten Group Member” Andrea Watts Keller University Leadership and Organizational Behavior MGMT 591 Timothy Staley November 16, 2013 Group Development As I began reading the “Forgotten Group Member”, I found that the group is in the “storming” stage of team development. I am able to determine this due to the setting of the events laid out by the author. The setting gives the present then it goes back and tells that the team is in week 5 of the project. The author also gives some history about the “forming stage” and events that had occurred at that time. After reading a bit more, it is clear that the group is experiencing some tension and rebellion by one of its team members. Had Christine, understood the importance of understanding the stages of development, she could have laid a better foundation as team lead so that they could have avoided this cynical behavior and the energy and outcome of the project would have been better for all of those involved. Problem Identification The primary problem in the case study was that Christine had failed to set the proper expectations and orientation for the group and this caused her to lose respect of one of her peers. Mike had been able to manipulate Christine with excuses from the beginning. Unfortunately, Christine fell subject to his manipulative behavior and lost control of her team as a hold. In my opinion, the “forming” stage of team development is very important...

Combating the Aggressive Life Style Inventory

...Combating the Aggressive Life Style Inventory and Gaining Success in the Workplace Glenn R November 9, 2014 MGMT 591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior Dr. Barbara Vallera Keller Graduate School of Management of DeVry University Abstract This paper explores the Life Styles Inventory (LSI) assessment and pitfalls of the competitive and approval management styles. In this evaluation, I also examine strengths and impacts of these styles. Specifically, how they can be utilized to benefit the organization and how these styles impact the four functions of management. This paper also reviews my circumplex (a person’s personal LSI profile) and critically evaluates and explains how these styles were developed. Through the course, Management 591 (MGMT 591), Leadership and Organizational Behavior (LOB), I also reflect on goals and accomplishments that can be achieved through the analysis of these frames. Combating the Aggressive Life Style Inventory and Gaining Success in the Workplace The LSI assessment helps an individual understand themselves by measuring what motivates individual behaviors. This assessment was developed by Robert A. Cooke and J. Clayton Lafferty, copyrighted by Human Synergistics International. It takes into account one’s thoughts and self-concepts and translates it into how one behaves. It looks at how one’s thinking influences goals, relationships, leadership effectiveness, and the ability to cope with stress (“What LSI Measures”, 2014). The...

Lsi -Life Style Inventory Survey

...Life Styles Inventory (LSI) Self-Description Suggs MGMT-591-20612 (Leadership & Org. Behavior) January 15, 2015 The Life Styles Inventory (LSI) survey was something that helped me somewhat understand more about myself than I knew before. It also was helpful with confirming other characteristics about myself that I already knew and had knowledge of. After taking the Life Style Inventory survey, I noticed that I scored relatively high in the following areas: Perfectionist, Power, and Competitive. These three were my top out of the 12 categories or characteristics from the LSI survey. I would agree with two of the following, in which the competitive style kind of surprised me. Then again, thinking about the types of decisions and situation that I’ve come across, those three things actually play a big part in how I deal with different things. When it comes down to situations that involve work or even my social life, I have the tendency to show each one of those styles in some way, shape, or form. Within society, those three styles, in my opinion, are needed in order to survive this “cold” world that we live in. If you are strong willed, you will succeed, but if you are weak minded, you might crumble beneath the pressure of society and the beings that live in it. Perfectionist, Power, and Competitiveness are things that play a key role within the aspect of my life and everyday situations. I’ve always been the strong willed being, which always strive for success regardless...

Mgmt 591 - Case Study 3 - Building Coalitions

...Case Study 3: Building a Coalition Keller Graduate School of Management MGMT 591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior March 22, 2015 Part 1: Group Development The five-stage group-development model consists of: forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. (Robbins 275) Forming stage. In this first stage, the team is getting to know each other, their backgrounds, work experience, and learning about their strengths and weaknesses. Informal leaders may start to emerge during this stage, and it’s important for management to recognize them. They are getting oriented with their surroundings as well as details about the task at hand. Management should be setting the stage for success by setting roles and responsibilities, providing instruction, guidance, expectations and structure. (Gervais 2014) Storming stage. At this stage, personalities start to come out (good and bad), group norms and/or cliques begin to form, and conflict between one or more of the members occurs. Management must address deviant behavior(s), misunderstandings, gossip/backtalk, etc and encourage communication, trust, and respect for each other. Norming stage. At this point, team members are conforming, getting along, supporting each other, and behaving in line with accepted and established group norms (such as showing up on time, contributing to the group effort, not speaking over each other, etc). Performing stage. At this stage, the team members’ efforts should be synchronized...

I will analyze the reasons why NASA allowed this aircraft to take off, and the reason why it should not have. I will also research the aftermath and how this huge error could have been avoided. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration was created on October 1, 1958 by the President of the United States and Congress. It was to provide research into the problems of flight within and outside the Earth’s atmosphere. The main reason NASA was invented was due to World War 2. The United States and the Soviet Union were engaged in a cold ward. During this time, space exploration become the one of the highest priority discussions. This became known as the space race. (American Psychological Association, 2011) The United States launched its first Earth satellite on January 31, 1958. It was called Explorer 1. Then the United States started several missions to the moon and other planets in 1950 and the 1960’s. It had 8,000 employees and an annual budget of $100 million. Nasa rapidly grew. They...

Farmersville Station, NY 14060 tierzahjane@yahoo.com Keller Graduate School of Management at DeVry MGMT-591-20618 Leadership & Org Behavior Professor Joseph Neptune February 22, 2015 Abstract The organization discussed in this work of literature is Cuba Memorial Hospital, located in Cuba, NY. Cuba Memorial Hospital is named as a Critical Access Hospital through a federally supported program. This allows the hospital to choose which services best meet the needs of the community with 50+ employees. Cuba Memorial provides mostly long-term care treatment as the main bulk of their income. Like many other hospitals, Cuba Memorial Hospital (Cuba Memorial Hospital) went thru a significant downturn around 2008 due to fraud and theft of education funding and much more. Not only do they lose funding, but also they also almost get shutdown every six months due to not meeting regulations in controlling heat and air-conditioning, as well as having asbestos in the pipes, and a lack of food as they have maxed out their credits with many companies. It has been a roller coaster for many years. The main contributor for many issues among the organization is lack of morale and ethics within the company and this contribute to a very high turnover rate overall. Employees are not very good as well due to the lack of appreciation of everyone’s hard work...
