Influence of Power Shown in Kindred

Abused, beaten and neglected. That’s how slaves were treated back in the 1700s. They did not have jurisdiction over their lives, their owners did. Most white people in the Antebellum South owned plantations and slaves. Slave owners figured out if they were to use their power against their slaves, it would make them work harder and fortify their obedience. In order to sustain the slave’s obedience, they had to beat them, push them to their breaking points and even killing them. In the book Kindred, slaveowners make the slaves, such as Dana, Sarah, and Nigel, do dirty work. If they weren’t obedient, masters would punish them demonstrating their power.
Rufus is the epitome of power. Since Rufus is white, it provides him with some measure of authority, but because Rufus is still in his youth he is powerless. Readers first meet Rufus when he is young and humane. In spite of being harassed by the message that his skin makes him better than all African-American individuals, Rufus' intuitive good sense teaches him that Alice and Nigel are deserving of his admiration …show more content…
Rufus set the drapes afire in retaliation against his father, who whipped him for stealing a dollar. “The boy already knew more about revenge than I ever did. What kind of man was he going to grow up into?” (Butler 20). Even this early on, Dana and Rufus’ relationship, has been formed. Rufus comes from a brutal world, and he is being raised by his parents, Tom and Margaret Weylin, and neglected to be a violent master when he matures unlike his father, Tom. Although Rufus is still a child, he already lives an existence where whippings are standard and fits of disgruntlement result in a fire. That foreshadows what is to proceed in the following chapters. When Rufus grows up he will be like his father by being unpleasant, spiteful and malicious towards his

The term, christened by the US government, has been synonymous with the unintentional emissions of electrical and electromagnetic energy from a cryptographic device. TEMPEST dates back to the late 19th century when the telephone was invented and during the First World War when “crosstalk”, conversation through single-wire cables of the telegraph, was exploited by spies to reveal the intelligence of the enemy. In particular, what is being tested is the resistivity of the device component and cryptographic system against cryptanalysis. In other words, the TEMPEST evaluation tests the sensitivity of the device component toward power and electromagnetic analysis attacks. The possibility that someone can intercept and interpret those electromagnetic radiations to reconstruct the exact information poses a serious security issue because it jeopardizes confidentiality and secrecy. An attacker usually employs statistical analysis, signal processing, and artificial intelligence techniques to decipher the...

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sing

...Elisabeth Schauer Mary F. Lyons LCS 360 A March 4th 2014 The Importance of Religion throughout African Americans in the 1900’s Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why the Caged Birds Sing” and Solomon Northrup, “Twelve Years a Slave” are two memoirs with similar themes that encompassed their societies. These literally works depicts many life stories in which thematic concerns of religion, racism, chauvinism, education, poverty and seclusion carry an American dream. One quickly notices that they both relate in the way they pass out their different themes especially the theme of religion in this case. Religion is the main concern in this article considered for literary analysis. Therefore, the two authors used religion as part of their larger story to bring out a more or less the same thematic concept. Maya Angelou composed a stunning and energizing personal history titled “I know why the caged birds sing” of her hardship in her growth as a dark young woman in the southern states of America. Set in the 1930's the place the legacy of subjection remained. One thing, which made this literature work so fascinating to peruse, was the way that this book had such a variety of topics, which are both relative and imperative to us today like the absence of equivalent chances, prejudice, bias, training, neediness, seclusion, religion and The American Dream. On the other hand, in his work Solomon Northrup’s, “Twelve Years a Slave” shows the pain and ill-use encountered by Solomon Northrup in...

...The literature ‘Everyman’ is a morality play that enables people to understand the Christian teaching through the struggle between good and evil. This play is still performed today. It clearly presents the meaning of death through the characters, components, settings, and, the content. “Everyman is an unusual drama in that departs from its analogues and from much medieval death literature both in tone and purpose. Everyman is serious; whereas medieval death literature saw man's sinful nature as a grave impediment to dignified death, Everyman presents such a death as a reality. Informing the presentation of death in Everyman is the author's penetrating insight which views dying as a process and death as a learning experience”. (Allen D, 87p.)2) Firstly, this play allows the audience to realize the meaning of death through a unique style in its structure. ‘Everyman’ starts with the setting where people have denied God. They are committing the ‘Seven Sins’ written in the bible. Seeing people being drenched in sin, God exposes the ‘Book of Life’ to them. The interesting thing about this play is the fact that the character is a middle-aged (or possibly younger) man. Thus, he faced death earlier than expected. The conversation between God and death represents God’s judgment in the context through the characters’ accidental death. Spiritual or Philosophical, this is an issue human struggle to accept. “… as with style, so with structure. The artistry which finds a style expressive of...

Asher B. Durand Painting

...Landscape—A Scene from “Thanatopsis,” inspired by Romantic poet William Cullen Bryant, exemplifies artist familiarity that results in multifaceted cultural creations. Both Bryant and Durand hail from the American Romantic movement, which emphasized nature as a source of refuge and rest, knowledge, and religious revelation. The painting has yet to be investigated beyond a visualization of Bryant’s work, illustrated by many reviews contemporary of 1850 as well as current scholarship. A deeper exploration of Durand’s work provides insight regarding prevalent creative themes of the current world of arts, as well as a look into Durand’s most honest inspiration as an artist. Though creating separate works—that must remain distinguishable for proper analysis of either work—Bryant and Durand investigated the themes of man and nature, individualism and the inner and after lives. Through detailing natural elements that emphasize the life cycle, Durand creates literary art that pays tribute to William Cullen Bryant’s Thanatopsis and to the American Romanticism movement. Asher B. Durand lived a highly successful six-decade career that “spanned the rise, dominance and eclipse” of landscape painting as a national enterprise. As a leading member of the art association known as the Hudson River...

Vogel (1996) stresses the importance of the interaction between Government and business, and how policies can effect business decisions, and both Vogel (1996) and Ryan et al. (2003) suggest that society is dependent upon both parties to address issues such as quality of productions, medical care and environmental protection. In the global financial crisis, both China and the United States (US) felt the strain of national debt. China is dependent on the US during this unstable economic period as their leading trading partner and importer of Chinese products, and likewise the US depends on these Chinese exports, largely for electrical machinery and power generating equipment (The US-China Business Council, 2009). However, for a business looking to establish itself in either China or the US, the question at hand is which country would be the most stable and economically beneficial environment for the business. This paper will provide an evidence based answer, after identifying each of the political regimes for China and the United States, and the effects they have had on businesses. Martin (2010) defines the political structure of the Peoples Republic of China ultimately as a one party system that is comprised of two different, yet adjoining, institutions; the Chinese Communist Party and the State Government Apparatus. Both structures mirror each other, as Communist Party representatives...

...paragraph is a series of sentences that are organized and coherent, and are all related to a single topic. Almost every piece of writing you do that is longer than a few sentences should be organized into paragraphs. This is because paragraphs show a reader where the subdivisions of an essay begin and end, and thus help the reader see the organization of the essay and grasp its main points. Paragraphs can contain many different kinds of information. A paragraph could contain a series of brief examples or a single long illustration of a general point. It might describe a place, character, or process; narrate a series of events; compare or contrast two or more things; classify items into categories; or describe causes and effects. Regardless of the kind of information they contain, all paragraphs share certain characteristics. One of the most important of these is a topic sentence. TOPIC SENTENCES A well-organized paragraph supports or develops a single controlling idea, which is expressed in a sentence called the topic sentence. A topic sentence has several important functions: it substantiates or supports an essay’s thesis statement; it unifies the content of a paragraph and directs the order of the sentences; and it advises the reader of the subject to be discussed and how the paragraph will discuss it. Readers generally look to the first few sentences in a paragraph to determine the subject and perspective of the paragraph. That’s why it’s often best to put the topic...

Everyman

...Everyman by Unknown Author ENGL 102-B33: Literature and Composition Fall B 2013 Turabian October 8, 2013 Everyman, a medieval morality play was written by an unknown author in 1495 and contains 921 lines. Regarded as one of the finest of the morality plays, Everyman is said to be an adaptation to the Dutch play Elckerlyc., The Chambers Dictionary of Eponyms defines “everyman” as the typical or average person, ‘the man in the street.’ The allegorical character Everyman is portrayed as the classified definition. The failure of every man is sin. Like a scorpion delivers a deadly sting, sin spreads its immovable sting; the result-death seizes its allegiance. ““. . . Where, O death, is your sting?” The sting of death is sin . . .”— (I Corinthians 15:55-56, New International Version). Before sin yielded its entrance, there was no account of Death. Sin is how Death marked Everyman. The character Death is symbolic of physical death and Everyman is symbolic of the entire human race. Physical death is predestined and removes the physical life of all humanity. Death is named by God, His mighty messenger (63); it can be perceived that Death is a forceful messenger of God. Not forceful to feel threatened or intimidation, but forceful in a sense of an “eye opener.” Under God’s rule, Death dispatches and conveys God’s message. Death is summoned by God, and is obedient to God’s submissive will and authority to approach Everyman and inform him of his inescapable journey...

Hr Analytics

...HR Analytics According to a 2004 Workforce Management (formerly Personnel Journal) article, “In 1978—in this publication—Jac Fitz-enz proposed a radical, anti-establishment idea. Human resources activities and their impact on the bottom line could—and should—be measured. The reaction was apathy, disagreement and disbelief” (Caudron, 2004). For the past three decades Fitz-enz has, along with a growing band of kindred spirits, campaigned tirelessly to improve the state of HR measurement and to help both HR professionals and senior executives understand its importance. These efforts started out at the nuts and bolts level—creating definitions for basic HR metrics such as compensation, staffing, hiring and retention. This work laid the foundation for gathering comparable data across organizations, which in turn, enabled the benchmarking of HR metrics. Over the years, a number of scholars and practitioners expanded the benchmarking of HR metrics to include investments in training and developing employees, as well as in a broad array of other HR policies and practices. Refining and improving the benchmarking of HR metrics remained a primary area of focus throughout much of the 1980s and 1990s. This benchmarking focus, while helpful in informing HR professionals about how their organization’s HR metrics stacked up to comparable or best-in-class organizations, provided little by way of actionable business intelligence on how to gain competitive advantage...

In order to compile a factually based discussion, a key area needed to be focused on, namely, how social changes affected the gender roles in the early 18th century (1832-48). The Effects of Social Networking on Human Interaction

...The Effects of Social Networking on Human Interaction
What is social networking? According to dictionary.com, social networking is defined as “the use ofwebsites or other online technologies to communicate with people and share information, resources, etc.” Social networking has become a must for many aspects of life. Human interaction often involves the discussion of something that appeared on a social networking website or the exchange of usernames for one to be found on a website. Many schools are incorporating the use of sites such as Facebook to keep students updated on events and homework, just in case the instructor had forgotten to mention something during class that day. A group of friends can make plans together over a group conversation since the number of callers in a multi-way call is limited. Clubs or organizations who need to spread the word of an upcoming event merely have to make a website or post a notice online and have people share it. There is less of a need for paid printed advertisements. Institutions and companies now give the option of applying online. But what has social networking done to the way people interact with each other? The way social networking changes how one interacts with others is no different from the way actual interactions change a person’s ability to socialize. Some, through social networking, have been able to create deeper and stronger relationships with other people, whether that relationship previously existed in some form or...
