Born on July 4, 1804, Nathaniel Hawthorne lived in a harsh puritan lifestyle. At the age of 4 his father died at sea and his family with no financial support moved in with his wealthy uncle. At an early age a leg injury left young Nathaniel immobile; during this time he developed a passion for reading and decided to become a writer. With the aid of his wealthy uncles, Nathaniel Hawthorne attended Bowdoin College from 1821 to 1825. At Bowdoin College he met and befriended Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Franklin Pierce, the future president of the USA. Graduating college and a long desire to see his family caused him to go home, for twelve years. It was during these twelve years that Nathaniel Hawthorne began to write and self-publish stories. By 1832, Nathaniel had written My Kinsman, Major Molineux, and Roger Malvin’s Burial, in 1837 he wrote one of his best works Twice Told Tales. Though writing made Nathaniel Hawthorne famous, it did not bring in a good income, so he worked for Boston Custom House weighing salt and coal. Tired of living a secluded life, Nathaniel started looking for a spouse; he met Sophia Peabody, she was a painter and artist. During his time in Lenox, he enjoyed the height of his success, and wrote The House of Seven Gable, Blithedale Romance, and Tanglewood Tales. During the 1852 election, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote a biography of his college friend Franklin Pierce. When Pierce won the presidency, he appointed Nathaniel as an American Consul to Britain as a reward for his biography. Living in Britain from 1853-1857, Nathaniel Hawthorne gathered inspiration for his book Our Old Home..
