Kira-Kira By:Kelly Newton
The title of the book I am reading is Kira-Kira. Kira-Kira means glittering in Japanese. The author of this book is Cynthia Kadohata.

The thing I liked most about the book is that Katie's older sister (Lynn) dies. Not that its a good thing but I think it gives the book more of an unexpected twist, and it makes it that much better to read. I also like the author and how she goes into detail about the things that need to be in detail not just rambling on about a chair like, my favorite scene when Lynn gets bitten by a dog so Katie throws a glass milk bootle at it. Then Lynn breaks free and the dog is trying to lap up the water with its tongue, but Lynn doesn't want the dog to cut its tongue so she chases it away with the garden hose. I also like how she explains things in great detail so you can picture even the trees in your mind.

The main theme would most likely be love, hope, and strength. This is because Katie loves her family so much and when her older sister lynn becomes sick with lymphoma, a disease, her family falls apart so Katie must become strong and help keep the family together by reminding them that there is something out there in the future.

I think the purpose of the book was to inform young-adult readers of what the 1950's through the 1960's was like. Because thats the time period when the book takes place and it does a good job of telling how poor families made it through some rough times.

The book is told by Katie Takeshima, the middle child of Japanese family. It talks about her life from the ages of five to teen. The older Katie tells the story of her childhood as well as her relationship with her family and others in the area where she lives. The book begins when Katie is five years old and living in Iowa. And she plays a lot with her older sister Lynn, who she loves.

Katie- Katie is the one who changes the most in this story and main character of this story. She is a Japanese-American girl growing up in Georgia. She lives with her parents, sister, and brother. She is heart broken when she finds out that she wasn't watching Lynn when she passed away. But she soon realizes that she must become strong and help keep the family together by reminding them that there is something out there in the future.

Lynn- Lynn is Katie's older sister and her best friend. Lynn takes care of Katie by explaining things to her and helping her make important decisions. Lynn's death is heart breaking to the family but when they move to the California shores (were Lynn wanted to live when she moved away) Katie realizes that Lynn will always be with her through the sea.

Samson- Samson is Katie's younger brother who is born in Georgia. Katie is very protective of Sam. He is very helpful and grateful to Katie in his times of need. Because he does whatever she says and always follows directions. Like the time when Sam, Katie and Lynn all went out on a picnic, and Sam got his leg caught in a bear trap so Katie ran through the woods and got help for him. Masao- Masao is Katie, Lynn and Sam's father. In Georgia he works two full-time jobs to support their growing family. He is very inspiring to Katie because of how he is always willing to put his family before himself in desperate times.

Kiyoko - Kiyoko is Katie's mother. She is very delicate. Masao often asks the children to be quiet so they do not disturb their mother. In Georgia she works in a hatchery and works 24 hour shifts. She is the backbone of their family because she is always there for advice and she keeps all of the kids and her husband in line.

Katsuhisa - Katsuhisa is Masao's brother. He is the complete opposite of Masao—loud, tall, and obnoxious. Katsuhisa is the one who helped the Takeshima family move from Iowa to Georgia.

Psychology 260

...(1+3) The story I chose to write about today was written on 02/17/15 and is headlined, “Can Dogs Recognize Emotions Just By Looking at a Human Face.” It refers to the study, “Dogs Can Discriminate Emotional Expressions of Human Faces” from the Current Biology Journal. The authors of the study are Corsin A Muller, Kira Schmitt, Anjuli L.A. Barber and Ludwig Huber. I noticed this article two weeks ago when I was browsing through Psychology Today. This article stood out to me because had learned about facial recognition in class that day, and this article deals directly with facial recognition, but by animals, which is more interesting because it’s no longer species-specific. I normally trust this news source because it is recognized, respected and trusted by the general body. (2) The story presents the findings in a calm manner, but still represents the findings as relatively novel. The findings are reasonably believable; the author put it nicely by saying, “The most interesting finding comes after the dogs had proved that they could distinguish happy versus angry seeing only the upper or lower half of the face. When they were next shown either the other half of the face used in the training stage, or the other halves of people's faces not used in training, the dogs could still discriminate between the happy and angry expressions.” What came as a surprise to me was the fact that the dogs could distinguish a human’s emotional expression just by seeing the upper or lower half of...

Autism

...Autism Autism is the most common condition in a list of developmental disorders known as the autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). People with autism may display impaired social interaction, problems with verbal and nonberbal communication, and unusual, repetitive, or severely limited activities and interests ("What is autism," 2011). As of today there is no official cure for autism but through education and training of parents most can have some sort of productive life. The word “autism” has been used for about 100 years comes from the Greek word “autos” meaning “self” (Nickolson, 2008). The term describes conditions in which a person is removed from social interaction or other words an “isolated self”. In 1911, Eugen Bleuler, a Swiss psychiatrist, was the first person to use the term autism. Austic children at one time thought or classified as schizophrenic as it was thought to be a behavioral issue. There are many key dates in the history of autism since 1911 and some more important than others. Here is a list of some of the important dates in the history of autism: * 1944 - Austrian pediatrician Hans Asperger publishes his work on autistic symptoms, Autistic Psychopathy in Childhood. * 1964 - American psychologist Bernard Rimland writes in Infantile Autism: The Syndrom and Its Implications For a Neural Theory of Behavior that autism is a biological disorder. * 1967 - Bernard Rimland founds the Autism Research Institute ARI in San Diego. Breach of Professional Accounting Ethics

...A Breach of Professional Accounting Ethics Kira Welcome Professor Dr. Jacob Angima Financial Accounting ACC 557 October 30, 2012 A Breach of Professional Accounting Ethics Based on the corporate ethical breaches in recent times I believe that the current businesses and regulatory environment is more conducive to ethical behavior due to the workplace. In the workplace ethics develops an atmosphere of respect and tolerance for everyone, by striving to conduct business in a manner that is beneficial to owners, employees and customers. It is very important to have trust and honesty between management, the employees, its co-workers, and between the business and its customers. When ethical lapses of trust becomes rampant, employee productivity declines, loyalty follows, and soon major breaches such as employee theft begin to appear (Calle, 2009). It is said that “Ethical integrity involves reporting others acting in dangerous or illegal way. The term whistleblowers are people who choose to expose wrongdoings, usually at the expense of their careers (Capozzi, 2008).” Ronald Jeurissen, author of “Ethics and Business,” says that whistle-blowing has moral considerations. For instance, the person should be sure the negative consequences to the company of such exposure do not outweigh the benefit to the public. When professional accounting ethics are breached accountants may expect to lose their job, or may even end up spending time in jail depending on the crime. As part of the...

Civil Rights

...10/13/06 American History Essence Harden 5/2/00 African-American Civil Rights “Struggle is a never ending process. Freedom is never really won. You earn it and win it in every generation.” –Coretta Scott King, page666 The 1960’s were a time of great turmoil in America and throughout the world. One of the main topics that arouse was black civil rights. In my essay I plan to compare the difference of opinion between these particular writers and directors, towards racism and the civil rights movement in the 1960’s The movement truly got underway with civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King jr. and Malcolm X in the early 1960’s. Students who wanted to bolt on the equality and protest bandwagon quickly followed. Most of the students went to the Southern states (Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, etc.), to stop the racism and hate crimes. The truth of the matter is that the violence and abhorrence would get worse before it got better. The Klan became stronger and more violent, committing many more lynching and gruesome murders. Bit by bit most of the Caucasian Americans came around to the idea of integration, and did not believe that the African Americans as a ‘threat’ anymore. The only reason that this great monumental change occurred was because of the great leadership of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King jr., and not to mention the thousands of other less famous civil rights leaders, that worked to change the views of their community. There also where lobbyist and protesters...
