In today’s generation of basketball superstars, there is one distinguished player, Kobe Bryant that holds a reflection to another known superstar, Michael Jordan in his ability to play the game, offensively and defensively; however, they differ in their overall performances. Although sports fans attempt to compare the two players, many will agree that Michael Jordan carries the best offensive and defensive numbers, while Kobe Bryant holds the title of the youngest all-star to ever enter the National Basketball Association. Both Jordan and Bryant were offered huge endorsement deals, with Kobe Bryant taking the lead as one of the largest global brands, in basketball history. The game of basketball is a rewarding sport that allows its players to give back to the community. There is no competition, when it comes to giving back to the community, as each player is equally involved in charitable organizations. In the professional basketball world, sports fans will agree that Michael Jordan is the better player, while other fans are loyal to Kobe Bryant. When looking at offensive and defensive numbers, objectivity and a hard look at the facts leaves one conclusion without a doubt, that Michael Jordan is one of the greatest players in NBA history. He is famous for blocked shots, rebounds, and scoring an average of 30 points per game, during his career (Squidoo, 2012). As an offensive player, Jordan has the advantage. In his best season, his fans will count on him to average 37 points per game compared to Kobe Bryant’s best season of 35 points per game. Michael Jordan, a true team player, averages eight assists per game in his best season, and an average of five assists during his career. Unlike Jordan, Kobe Bryant, as an offensive player averages six assists per game during his best season, and he is close to beating Jordan’s average with four assists per game (Squidoo, 2012). In the game of basketball a defensive player is crucial; whether looking at rebounds, steals, or blocked shots by overall best season or career, Michael Jordan is the man that will come out on top. Jordan is one of the most feared defensive players in the league; known for disarming his opponents with jokes, smiles, and back-slaps (Squidoo, 2012). Statistically, Jordan averages three steals per game, in his best season, compared to Kobe Bryant’s average of two steals per game. Michael Jordan averages eight rebounds in his best season, compared to Bryant’s six rebounds. When looking at career totals, Jordan averages two steals per game and Bryant averages one steal per game. As for rebounds, Jordan averages six rebounds per game, and Bryant five rebounds per game (Squidoo, 2012). Michael Jordan, during his career, was nominated as the Most Valuable Player on several occasions including taking home six NBA championship rings. Although Michael Jordan has his own claim to fame, Kobe Bryant carries unique qualities as well. Bryant is known for becoming one of the youngest players drafted into the NBA, and at one point scored a phenomenal 81 points in a single game. Since joining the Los Angeles Lakers in 1996, Bryant has won five NBA championship rings, became a 14-time All Star, and a four-time All Star MVP (Squidoo, 2012). Image is everything to Kobe Bryant. His name, his basketball skills, and his ability to lead his team to the NBA finals on numerous occasions, has awarded him huge endorsements. On an international level, its Kobe Bryant that teams considered giving $1 million dollars a month to play. No other basketball player has become a bigger global brand than Kobe Bryant. He is the most dominant player of the decade (Forbes, 2011). In February 2011, the McDonald’s Corporation signed Kobe Bryant to a $10 million endorsement deal. He was later dropped by the company because of negative publicity (Sexton, (2011). In 1998, a video game, of Kobe Bryant was released. He is the youngest athlete to ever have a video game to his namesake. Recently, the Nike Corporation featured him in a commercial, jumping over a speeding car, wearing Nike’s Hyperdunk shoes (Sexton, (2011). Michael Jordan, considered by ESPN network, is the greatest athlete of the 20th century, while the Associated Press ranked him second only to Babe Ruth (Premiere Athlete & Celebrity, 2009). Michael Jordon’s list of endorsements is equally comparable to his long list of winnings. Jordan appeared on the cereal box, Wheaties, while in his Chicago Bulls uniform causing the sales of the cereal to sky rocket. His endorsement deals are plenty, and he is considered the most prestigious athlete in the history of sports. Along with his cereal endorsement, he has promoted brands such as Nike; Gatorade, McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, Ball Park Franks, Chevrolet, Hanes, and Ray-o-Vac to name a few (Premiere Athlete & Celebrity, 2009). Out of all his endorsement deals, Nike proved to be the most successful, awarding him his own line of tennis shoes. When it comes to giving back to the community, Kobe Bryant devotes a majority of his time promoting different causes to benefit children and young adults. In 2007, Bryant, along with his wife Vanessa, started the Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation (KVBFF). The foundation offers life changing experiences for individuals, to broaden their global perspectives (The Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation, 2011). Kobe Bryant is active in multiple charities including the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Boys & Girls Club of America, NBA Cares, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and the After School All-Stars (The Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation, 2011). As a philanthropist, Bryant’s most rewarding gift to the community, because of his love for basketball, is the Kobe Bryant Basketball Academy. Through the academy, Bryant interacts with young children, teaching them activities associated with basketball. Michael Jordan is involved with a variety of charitable organizations including the following; the Boys & Girls Club of America, The Jackie Robinson Foundation, the UNCF-College Fund, and the Special Olympics (White, 2006). In 1994, Michael Jordan founded the James R. Jordan Boys and Girls Club and Family Life Center. The center, named after his father, opened after the Chicago Bulls basketball team donated a hefty $5 million to the foundation (White, 2006). The foundation provides the opportunity for people of all ages to participate in numerous activities, in a safe and pleasant environment. When it comes to basketball and superstars, the names that come to mind first is Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan. Both Jordan and Bryant are comparable when it comes to success, giving back to the community, and the ability to play the game of basketball. Although both players are often compared in their basketball skills, they should be considered the “father” and “son” of basketball, with Michael Jordan setting the tone by opening the history book of basketball and Kobe Bryant adding additional chapters. Even though Michael Jordan is retired and Kobe Bryant is still active, both will go down in basketball history as two of the greatest players in the National Basketball Association (NBA). .
