Kudler Fine Food Analyzing Prototype

Kudler Fine Foods wants to improve the functionality of their current website to be more competitive. Team C has research the challenges of implementing e-commerce functionality. Team C analyzes how to add online shopping cart functionality to Kudler's site and how to optimize the website search engine. In the following paper we will be discussing the following question. Identify basic XHTML tags and attributes used in the prototype; compare how different web browsers display our prototype and what difference did we see in the web browsers and what caused them? Describe how Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) were used to format your web content. Explain how JavaScript® arrays, loops and conditional statements were used in your prototype. Identify professional web development standards we used in the development of your prototype. Then we will explain how metadata might promote this website and identity the process we used to publish, maintain, and redesign the website. Kudler Fine Foods specializes in bakery, pastry products, fresh produce, fresh meat & seafood, condiments and packaged foods and cheese and specialty dairy products. They also specialize in wine and have a wine steward who assists customers in making their selection. Kudler Fine Foods has a local upscale specialty retail store in the San Diego metro area, and has two other locations in California. By having their location in an upscale area, Kudler Fine Foods strategy is to attract a customer base with high disposable income and a segment that purchases more specialty foods. Because the location is located in the metropolitan area, Kudler will also attract a lot of foot traffic. With attracting a lot of foot traffic, they aim to bring in new customers who may not otherwise seek out the store. When analyzing Kudler Fine Foods website to make improve the functionality of their current website to be more competitive we need to market products and their events that they may hold in their stores.
When improving Kudler Fine Food websites we identify basic XHTML tags and attributes used in the prototype. Then we compared how different web browsers display our prototype and what difference did we see in the web browsers and what caused them? When improving the website we deigned XHTML designed to help increase accessibility of documents, improving presentation of the website as well as improving extensibility. Improving the website we wanted the customers to be able to make orders online as well to being able to see the different products they offer that customer may not know about if they never went into Kulder Foods also by showing the product it helps the customer know what's in the store and what to expect.
Some of the XHTML tags that we added were tables. We added table to help improve the website to provide enhanced methods for representing information through the markup. The table we used has complete enclosed table tags and the website has hypertext. Hypertext will help the customer by clicking on the hypertext it will link them to the pictures of the products that Kudler Fine Foods sells and we also added the shop by category, which will bring the customer to a page that show's prices of each item that Kulder sells and also makes shopping easy too. The customers can just add in the box next to the item they would like to purchase how items they would like and then click check out may. By adding the hypertext feature, will be benefit to customer who don’t have a Kudler Fine Foods in their area or a customer that may not have time to get to a store.
We compared different web browsers to display to our prototype. When comparing web browsers we noticed almost all had the same features. There is one browser we needed that supported all the features it boasted of, so when comparing we had to figure out what features, that we wanted supported and the basic usability.
Team C decided on Google Chrome. Google Chrome is the newest installment in the arena of browsers, and is competing for the title of ‘best internet web browser’. Kudler Fine Foods wants their customers to be able to easily find and view their site, while having the website upload quickly. Google Chrome offers features like its ability to upload web-pages at a great speed, and also handle JavaScript pages very effectively. They also offer features which other web browsers do not.
The difference we saw in the web browsers and what caused them were many. The other web browsesr we looked into were Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Opera. When choosing a good browser its really very important to save time by providing accurate websites and also ensuring that there is a good loading speed. When Team C was approving the website we added JavaScript to our page, because it’s based on scripting language that is dynamic and it has a multi-paradigm language to support our programming styles. When selecting and researching a web browser Team C wanted the browser to be able to support all tags and formals that were imbedded in the site. Google Chrome had the capabilities that Team C was looking for.
After completion of testing the prototype in different browsers, we noticed that we needed to implement the use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS); and continuing to follow our several subtasks, brought us to subtask three: Describe how you used Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to format the site’s web content. With HTML, it doesn’t mater if you use the html, head and body elements, and DOCTYPE; but XHTML does require them. XHTML gives WebPages their basic structure, CSS defines their appearance. A style sheet is really just a text file that contains one or more rules that determine, through properties and values, how certain elements in the Webpage should be displayed. Also there are CSS properties for controlling that type of basic formatting: font size and color; layout properties, such as positioning and float; and print controls for figuring out where page breaks should appear. CSS also has a number of great properties, which allow items to appear and disappear. These are very useful when creating drop-down menus and other interactive components (Castro, 2007). Since were only creating a prototype, we decided to keep the CSS simple by using the following: .buttonStyle1, .tblcolstyle1, body, .input error, h1, .tblcolstyle1, and .txtwidthstyle. These seven CSS tags allowed the three different pages to load quickly, while maintaining the same visual appearance on each page.
Once we implemented the CSS, we started to concentrate on our fourth of seven subtasks: Explain how JavaScript® arrays, loops, and conditional statements were used in our prototype. The prototype for Kudler Fine Foods is a JavaScript based webpage. The page is designed in using two JavaScript files that are linked in to all the pages and some JavaScript on the webpage's. The index.html page has inside a table and it pulls what is used at a left bar on the page. This piece of JavaScript can be changed and all the webpage's left bars are changed. This makes it easier to make changes to the website without having to change code on each page. There are several JavaScript loops within the prototype website. One of the loops reads the data from the inventory file and places the data into an array. Once in the array, the data is filtered by type or filtered through with a fuzzy search, before it is placed on the webpage. There is also a loop that gets the data from the cookie and displays it in the shopping cart of the page. This is done by placing the data in an array and looping through it with a “for” loop for the length of the array. The loop is increased by four in each cycle until the end of the loop. For example, the first element is the ID of the item; the second element is the name. The cart list array is formed using: var _cartlist = getCookie ("kff").split("|") and the loop goes: for (i = 0; i < _cartlist.length - 1; i = i + 4) {}.
Metadata describes other data it can be literally defined as "data about data". It provides information about a certain item's content. It is imperative to have metadata in order to understand stored information and to bridge the gap in XML-based web applicationsNext we must look at the title tags used as well as the URLs. Once again, keywords are an important part of the design code and will help search engines find the new website. If photos or images are to be used on the website it is important to makes sure these images have alternate text built into the code. This serves two purposes, one is to help with search engine optimization and the other is to display the text incase the browser doesn’t display the image or the photo. One of the recommendations for Kudler Fine Foods to avoid using Flash or JavaScript as search bots will not be able to index the website pages.
Website Structure
The use of internal links within the website will aid in navigation and will also enhance the traffic to the individual pages. A site map is another important part of the design as it will link all of the pages and makes it easier for spiders to search the website. The content of the website needs to be updated on a regular basis. It is recommended that there be a blog on the site as well as suggestion boxes for customers. One more recommendation is to have the home page linked to, from other websites that might be vendor sites where products are purchased for the business. If the companies that Kudler purchases products from have their own website then this could be good for both businesses.
Monitoring and Site Maintenance
After the website has been redesigned and approved it will become an on-going effort to monitor the site. The Google toolbar is one way to do this. With Google being one of the most popular search engines they also offer design guidelines that should be used or examined very closely. During the research for this project it became apparent that when a website is being designed or redesigned, there are a lot of options for SEO. The best place to start is to look at what other similar websites look like and to view them in different browsers. Kudler Fine Foods current website is bland and lacks appeal. With a new design and the implementation of the recommendations discussed, the new website should increase customer traffic to the website and add to the overall customer experience.
Summary
Kudler Fine Foods has taken the first step in the expansion of their business beyond the brick and mortar locations by electing to use E-Commerce as another avenue that its customers can use to purchase the finest of food stuffs that only Kudler Fine Foods can provide. Through the concepts mentioned above, Kudler Fine Foods has the ability to create an E-Commerce site that not only benefits its customers, but that is also structured to last in a market that has exploded over the years.
Through good practices, such as creating the edge over the vast sea of competition, recognizing and overcoming the challenges to creating an E-Commerce site, working with the recommended processes, and utilizing search engine optimization, Kudler Fine Foods will create an E-Commerce solution that its customers will repeatedly use, that will acquire customers that are not physically bound to the brick and mortar locations, and that will provide Kudler Fine Foods with a monetary value that cannot be duplicated without the E-Commerce solution. In this paper team “C” discussed how to identify basic XHTML tags and attributes used in your prototype Included were Comparison of how different web browsers display your prototype and differences between the web browsers. We also described how Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) were used to format our web content to include Java Script Finally, we identified the process used to publish, maintain, and redesign this website.

The options that will be discussed are; going public through an IPO, acquiring another company in the same industry, and a merger with another organization. We then will show the strengths and weaknesses to each approach, the opportunities of each approach, the threats of each approach and the financial implications. In conclusion we will discuss our recommendation. IPO, Acquisition, or Merger: Why Each Would Work There are three viable options for Kudler Fine Foods as it decides how to expand its operations. It can go public and offer shares through an initial public offering (IPO), it can acquire another company in the same industry, or it can merge with another organization. Why an IPO would work. Kathy Kudler’s overall plan is to operate the business for another 10 to 15 years and then retire (University of Phoenix, 2008). The advantages of going public are that an IPO would raise new capital for Kudler Fine Foods, Kathy Kudler would gain liquidity of her share holdings, the company would gain future access to the public capital market, and Kudler Fine Foods would enjoy the benefits of the higher profile afforded by being publicly traded (Keown, Martin, Petty & Scott, 2005). ...Marketing Kudler Fine Foods Sophia A. Canaii University of Phoenix Marketing Kudler Fine Foods Kudler Fine Foods (KFF) is a gourmet food store that provides the finest baked goods, meats, produce, cheese and dairy and wine. The company was established in 1998 by Kathy Kudler after she discovered there was not a gourmet food store in her neighborhood. Kudler Fine Foods is located in La Jolla, Del Mar and Encinitas. These three locations are within a 75-mile radius to each other. According to Kudler’s Strategic Plan “The Del Mar location is not doing as well as expected. Although the area meets the economic demographics for a successful area, the town is too small to really support the store.” This is not necessarily true, because the strategic plan noted that Del Mar’s population was 4,389 people, but household income in 2000 was $98,257. However, Kathy initially set up her store in that location because the area was considered economically strong. The following development of the problem statement comes from completing steps one through three of the problem-solving model (University of Phoenix, 2008). The Del Mar location is not as successful as projected because the population is not a great as the La Jolla area. Because of this, Kathy plans to consolidate the Del Mar location with the Carlsbad location, which is in the works. One of the weakness the Del Mar office faces is that it has the lowest population in regards to the La Jolla and Encinitas location...

I believe the values are similar between Kathy Kudler and I because Kathy quality standards are high and her devotion to customer service is outstanding. A willing combination for any business. Mine are also similar, as will soon be seen. The “Ethics Awareness Profile indicated that I am most closely aligned with: [C] character. The assessment also indicated I am least closely aligned with: Equity” (The Williams Institute for Ethics and Management, 2006). After studying the material associated with this assessment, I decided to concentrate on the characteristics that I am the most strongly associated with then the characteristics that I am not. The assessment indicates that a character type of ethical person, “tends to base your ethical perspective on what it is good to be, rather than what it is good to do. You believe that ethics should focus on ways to help people achieve moral excellence” (The Williams Institute for Ethics and Management, 2006). I read further and came across a couple of more interesting points concerning the character ethical type. I “believe that ethics relies on the ability of individuals to make sound moral judgments. I do not believe that it is enough to comply with some preset standards or principals of right and wrong to find the solution to a complex ethical dilemma. (The Williams Institute for Ethics and Management, 2006)”. I ask myself what does this mean...
