...Cam John Dr. Adelle Mery English 1301.11 June 21, 2011 Title Living seven miles from the Mexican border, Mexican food restaurants are abundant, but no two are necessarily the same. La Mexicana and Taco Bell are two restaurants in McAllen, Texas, that stand out in my mind. Even though they both serve tacos, they don’t have anything else in common. They cater to different types of customers, there is a difference in service speed, and the atmosphere of these two places is noticeably different. These two restaurants do not compete for the same customers. Taco Bell is universally known, therefore, visitors not familiar with McAllen know what to expect. The prices are cheaper so budget-friendly people are targeted. La Mexicana caters to local residents and know they will be spending considerably more for their meal. As well as targeting different customers, Taco Bell places a lot of emphasis on speed. Their meals are cranked out via an assembly line. They use computers, automatic times, and headsets to aid in the speed process. La Mexicana’s service is based on the customers’ dining pleasure. They are seated by a hostess, have a server at their beckon call, and the food is prepared by cooks who are first generation American residents who learned how to cook Mexican cuisine in their native country. The meals are prepared methodically using fresh ingredients, making it as authentic as if it were prepared homemade. The structural appearance and interior atmosphere...

Slam the Hate

...Slam the Hate was an event held at The Barn at UCR on Saturday November 17, 2012 from 6- 10 pm. The event was advertised as an “evening of spoken work and music by queer and trans performers of color, LGBTQ community resources, food and community building.” The event was sponsored by UCR’s Associated Students Program Board, Resident Hall Association, Diversity Initiatives, LGBT Resource Center, KUCR 33.3 FM, and by “Prism” of La Sierra University. The event did not start until around 7:30pm with performers such as Crystal Cheatham, J Mase III, Emotions, and Regie Cabico. When the event began, Rebecca Kem of La Sierra University took the opportunity to thank UCR for allowing the event to be made possible. Kem is the president of Prism, a gay and lesbian club, that cannot get permission from La Sierra University to grant them official recognition because of Seventh-day Adventist Church teachings on homosexuality. Due to this, LGBT students in this university do not have services they can rely to for help or acceptance. She explained to the audience that there are many students who do not count as the student body because of their sexual orientation and gender identity. Since La Sierra does not permit non-sanctioned clubs to be held on campus, UCR was more than willing to help students who are in search of resources that they can use and improve. Since the Adventist Church supports the values of the SDA Church, they turned down the club because they teach same-gender sexual activity...

Music

...Noche Cultural - ucr In this ethnographic research project, I will explain my recent visit to a Hispanic concert located at The University of Riverside located in their Theater. In this paper I will discuss the type of music that was played, the performers, and instruments that the performers used to play in this concert. In addition I will also incorporate and give a brief history of these performers and the influences these musicians had. By concentrating on these aspects I will be able to understand the Music’s culture and also have the opportunity to listen to something new. I will also analyze the audience and the venue where this concert was held at. So I’m able to understand more of the audience and the community they live in. On a Friday 13 around 7:00 p.m. my friend Christy and I decided to attend to the concert called, “21st Annual Noche cultural”. We initially picked this concert because we read an online advertisement and it was in Spanish so we thought it would be a good idea to attend to this concert since it was the type of music we were both able to understand. When we arrived at the concert I honestly thought it was going to be empty and no one was going to attend but surprisingly a lot of people were present .There was even a stand by line because all the tickets were already sold out. Since this was more of Hispanic, Latino concert the majority of the audience who attended to this concert was Hispanic. Also because this concert is located at Riverside...

Irresistable

...Different Types of Folk Dances Itik-Itik The best description of the Itik-Itik is that the steps mimic the way a duck walks, as well as the way it splashes water on its back to attract a mate. According to popular tradition, the dance was created by a lady named Kanang who choreographed the steps while dancing at a baptismal party. The other guests copied her movements, and everyone liked the dance so much that it has been passed along ever since. Tinikling The Tinikling is considered by many to be the Philippines' national dance. The dance's movements imitate the movement of the tikling bird as it walks around through tall grass and between tree branches. People perform the dance using bamboo poles. The dance is composed of three basic steps which include singles, doubles and hops. It looks similar to playing jump rope, except that the dancers perform the steps around and between the bamboo poles, and the dance becomes faster until someone makes a mistake and the next set of dancers takes a turn. Sayaw sa Bangko The Sayaw sa Bangko is performed on top of a narrow bench. Dancers need good balance as they go through a series of movements that include some impressive acrobatics. This dance traces its roots back to the areas of Pangapisan, Lingayen and Pangasinan. Binasuan The Binasuan is an entertaining dance that is usually performed at festive social occasions like weddings and birthdays. Dancers carefully balance three half-filled glasses of rice wine on their heads and...
