Introduction: The Last Knight
In the European nations, the glamorous of the Middle Ages fascinates people a lot, mostly during the times of Chivalry. The Arthurian legends and the chivalry poetry encouraged most authors to write fictional or entertainment books. Some of which are romantic books, while some are for leisure. Indeed, the early work of the past writers gives a lot of historical information to write about the present happenings from a life of Europeans (Hülsmann, 2007). For instance, the history of Errol Flynn's Prince Edward and the Black Knight contains a lot of historical records to talk. In essence, most writers today borrow some of their literature work from these fantasies such as the Knights and life of the medieval when they read the historical realities or fictions. However, in most cases they do not realize that the work they are writing on presently already recorded in the past.
This premise forms the main objective or value why Norman F. Cantor wrote his book named "The Last Knight." Cantor wrote the book for anyone who may want to develop a solid concept of life during the prehistorical time (Morgan, 2012). Cantor used a key figure, Gaunt John, in continuous snapshots based on medieval life. In his work, Cantor succeeded to sideline the psychological baggage mostly got from movies, fictional tales and the comic strips, Prince Valiant.
John of Gaunt was an eminent person in England towards the end of the middle ages. Regardless of his position, whose son came to throw over his nephew from the regime following protest from Gaunt, he was relegated to a footnote according to the historical records. In the present day, he is mainly referred to as the sponsor of Geoffrey Chaucer.
The main figure in the book, Ghent John was born in 1340, where the name Gaunt who is an Anglicization derived, was the second son (Cantor, 2010). He was the only son who survived during the reign of King Edward the 3rd of Plantagenet of England. He later inherited the leadership to the title of Lancaster Duke which he obtained from his father-in-law. During that period, his leadership line was called Lancastrian and was symbolized by a red robe. After his throne, John of Gaunt, his son, Henry, took over from his nephew. The latter King was known as King Henry the 4th. The young Edward was promoted to be the Duke of York. A white rose marked the lineage of the present York. Since the ruling families preferred using the roses, a war of roses emerged, a conflict that came to sweep England. During the time of Gaunt's grandson, there was continuous chaos that started in the reign of John of Gaunt's life.
Cantor popularized this history as well as the ruling families all over the European nations. Cantor's main view was to clarify the interconnection that exist between people and communities on the cover of his book, the last knight. However, he later deviated from the chronological story. Instead of focusing on the major topic, he departed to Plantagenet England, females, solders, Spain, the faithful, peasants and the Chaucer (Kennedy, 2013). In the sections talking about the "warriors" and "Spain", for instance, Cantor brought out the rituals, the vivid facts of combat and ideals of John of Gaunt together with his brother known as the black prince Edward. In the same chapters, Cantor also explored the military injustices in France and Spain.
On the other side, "peasants" brings out the enmity of the low class for John of Gaunt, that Langland's influential poetry fired the Piers Plowman and the teachings of Lollard clergy John Ball. The description that Cantor provided the lectures of Ball factored a lot to the rising revolts by the peasants. During the time of revolt in the Palace of Savoy, which is the hometown of John Gaunt in London, got burnt down. From the story, the reminiscent of the present day politics developed based on individual destruction.
In conclusion, the topical arrangement of the book made it the best choice for my personal library of collection mainly as entertainment book. I frequently read the book in a span of 2-to-3-page stints. Most of the time I read it while sitting on my couch in the living room. Moreover, it creates an easy work to go through it while waiting in the queue in the banking hall or at the nurse office.
