Last Night’s Hour In The Office
An Informal Essay By Shoba Clare Daniels.
I have Wanted to write my friend for a while. I walked in to the office around 7:30, the office is buzzing with activity. To my right I see Uncle Brown busy with the service man fixing the printer which has been sending out of itself white sheets of paper with ziggy black lines, and gray smudges instead of the print job.
Beside him sits Mr. White on rose, incase your wondering all the computers have names and are networked. Rose is a girl, Zion the workhorse, Matrix is used for layout, and Blue moon, well that’s Uncle Brown’s personal computer and the rest of us only use it once in a blue moon. Mr. White multitasks as i observe him he is simultaneously; writing a letter to a client, talking on the phone, and sending an SMS on his mobile.
Although I didn’t notice when I first walked in the office, Steven is in the store room, singing cheerily a sad song, as he cleans the 4 by 6 room, counts the supplies and prepares the orders.
Matt is on Matrix Computer designing a webpage and as I walk by I see on the screen a quote which says “the secret of achievement is to not let what your doing get to you before you get to it”.
I notice the only computer left available is Zion I sit down, and open a word document to type a letter to my friend, before my fingers can touch the keyboard I hear Uncle Brown asking me to run some errands for him, I leave to finish the errands, and return in 5 minutes.
Once again I sit down and reach for the keyboard I begin, “Dear Friend,” before I can add to these two words the phone rings, Mr. White sends me running to call John. After I search the whole place for him, I find out he is on the roof, I breathlessly run up the roof stairs and call him.
I walk slowly down the stairs and return to the letter I am trying desperately to start. I type rapidly writing a few paragraphs about life, and recent happenings. I notice Mr. White calling my name, and realize he wants me to move a file for him as for some reason the network on the computer is not letting him access it. With a few swift copy and paste moves I place it on the Rose Computer Desktop.
Turning back to my letter, the computer it seems cold and unresponsive, now what, I inwardly sigh! As I feverishly begin pressing on various buttons to confirm that my computer is FROZEN. Everything I try proves that it is frozen. And oops I didn’t save my file...hmm! As I tell the computer to restart, it informs me “shutting down will result in you losing unsaved information.” Just when i think it can’t get worse, the office is plunged into darkness.
Thank God not every night is as bad as Last Night’s , Hour in the office.

Dream Analysis

...According to Merriam-Webster, a dream can be defined as a series of thoughts, images or emotions occurring during sleep. Form many people, sleep can be a disturbing time, but for others it can be a peaceful, longing time of the day. For me, I LOVE my sleep, as well as any dreams that may accompany my slumber. I would like to think I have a very vivid imagination, based on some of the dreams that I encounter. I do find that I can remember most of my dreams, at least for a few hours, however, by the end of the day, I honestly can say that last night’s dream has been long since forgotten. After having a late night talk with my brother a year or so ago, I discovered that he and I are even more similar than I thought. He revealed to me that he often times gets a sense of déjà vu, most frequently after “dreaming”. Ever since I was a teenager, many times I feel as though I encounter situations that I have dreamt about. For example, today while sitting in an office meeting, I was just sitting and minding my own business, when all of a sudden I turned my head and looked at someone giving a presentation, I felt as though I had just dreamt that very scenario a few weeks ago. It certainly can’t be explained, but I got such a weird feeling, that I interpret as déjà vu. I personally do not believe that my dreams solve my problems nor answer my problems. What I do believe however is that my dreams are often times prompted by situations going on in my life. For example, I started...

Procrastination

...glowing computer screen yet again. I’m waiting for inspiration. My friends, kind enough to let me use their dorm room and their Macintosh, are asleep in their beds just feet away in the half-darkness, reaping the rewards of their wisdom: they haven’t waited until the night before like I have. I take swigs of Mountain Dew from a plastic mug; it’s the sweet nectar of the Gods of Last-Minute Paper Writing. No, make that bittersweet nectar -- the taste of sugary green goodness reminds me, with every swallow, that I’ve sentenced myself to another unnecessary all-nighter. I have few ideas and even less time…  The blinking computer cursor on an otherwise empty screen was the college version of the blank white page of my earlier years, before technology had taken us so far. But for me it was, in many ways, the same old problem. With early drafts of a paper rarely required, I came time and time again to a point where a significant portion of my grade rested on what was essentially a single night’s work. I usually left myself no option but to write in one long session on a computer - there weren’t enough hours remaining to compose a version on paper to be typed up afterward. And time and again, my method, such as it was, worked for me. I not only survived but prospered. But I sometimes wondered, and still wonder: this works, but am I progressing? Has my writing grown? Should it be possible to turn out an “A” paper in a night? What standards are being used to judge these papers? Do my...

Extenuating Circumstances Explained

...that you could have no prior knowledge of the event concerned, and • unpreventable - in that you could do nothing reasonably in your power to prevent such an event, and • expected to have a serious impact on performance You are expected to make reasonable plans to take into account commonly occurring circumstances (such as transport or computer problems), even those which, on occasion, may have been unforeseeable and unpreventable. (Note: Ongoing extended circumstances are not covered by extenuation procedures. Ongoing medical conditions may be covered by disability procedures) Q What is meant by a serious impact on performance? A Many things may have an impact on our performance – a poor night’s sleep, a minor illness (such as a cough or cold), a minor injury, and financial worries and so on. These will often impact on our performance but would not be expected to have a serious impact and so would not be acceptable as extenuating circumstances. Q What are examples of circumstances which might normally be regarded as extenuating circumstances? A It is impossible to define a complete list but here are two examples • a serious personal illness (which is not a permanent medical condition – this is governed by disability procedures): For example, an illness requiring hospitalisation over the...

Clinical Assessment Marla

...Today I had the pleasure of meeting with Marla in my office at the clinic. She is a 42 year old Hispanic woman that had a well groomed and neat appearance. She also looked very tired and noticeably anxious. I smiled and offered her something to drink while she made herself comfortable. When I returned with her tea, she and I had a conversation that I was able to include the following questions so I could reveal more information about her troubled lifestyle. How are you doing today? As Marla took a sip of her tea she said she is very tired from not sleeping well at night. She also stated that she does not like the jumpy feeling she is constantly experiencing when she is at work. She also stated that because of these feelings and lack of sleep she is unable to concentrate which is effecting her work performance as an accountant. Which is starting to annoy her boss. What has been going on lately to bring you to the office? Marla told me her mom has been ill recently and she and her siblings all helped to take care of her. She also told me that her mom lives in the same neighborhood where Marla and her siblings were raised. She also added that she feels anxious all the time especially when at work. What type of neighborhood did you grow up in? I asked that question because when Marla was talking about her mom she had the look of concern on her face as she answered. Marla went on to tell me that her mom’s neighborhood is not safe for her mom. She said that there...

Restorative Theory: Why Do We Sleep?

...This theory is one of the most recent and probably one of the best at explaining why we sleep. This theory states that “sleep is based on finding thay sleep is correlated to change in the structure and organization of the brain” (Why Do We Sleep, Anyway?). This is not fully understood but it is connected to its several critial implication. That is why they recommend for people to sleep from 7 to 8 hours daily. This directly effects the ability for people to learn and perform varied tasks. But not everyone reacts the same way. There are different type of peope; the Standard Sleepers, Larks, and Owls. Standard sleepers are those that “sleep/wake rhythm pushes most people to sleep from about 1030 or 1130 PM to 630 or 730 AM”. Larks are “most comfortable going to bed between 9 and 10 PM and waking up between 5 and 6 AM”. Lastly, an owl have the tendency to go to bed late and sleep late. (Epstein, et al....

...Time Management Essays-Various Top Five Time Management Mistakes Time management is not necessarily working "harder", but rather, "smarter." And to accomplish significantly more in our days, we need not increase our efforts. As an example, in a horse race, the first horse may earn a $50,000 purse and the second horse may earn a $25,000 purse. The first horse gets twice as much money as the second horse, not because it ran twice as far or twice as fast. It was only a "nose ahead" of the competition. So it is with our daily results. We need not run twice as fast or put in twice the effort to significantly increase our daily success. We only need to be a "nose ahead" of where we already are. We are all productive in our days. We would not survive the demands of this world if we were not. The real challenge is how much more productive can we become? And, a lot of our time management has to do with more of what we are not doing rather than what we are doing. Sometimes our mistakes and omissions will keep us from running at a full pace. Here are the Top Five Time Management Mistakes we should all avoid to help us to increase our daily success both on and off the job, in less time and with less stress. 1. Start your day without a plan of action. You will begin your day by responding to the loudest voice (the squeaky wheel gets the grease) and spend it in a defensive mode, responding to other people's and events' demands. The tail will wag the dog. If there is a void of...

Lt. Gov Race

...Jeffrey A. Young Jeffrey A. Young Org. Comm. Org. Comm. LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR’S RACE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR’S RACE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR’S RACE The Facts A debate over who voters should elect to look after the state’s seniors devolved into a battle over whether a 30-year-old Democratic state representative or a 67-year-old Republican former state attorney general has the experience and vision needed to lead South Carolina. In Monday night’s ETV debate, Republican Henry McMaster trouped himself as the experienced candidate with the ruling and development needed to step in for the governor “in case something happens,” to run the state’s $40 million Office on Aging and to preside over the state Senate. “Presiding over the Senate’s 46 members, some powerful, been there a long time? Not easy,” said McMaster of Columbia. “They must have respect for that person to get things done.” But Bakari Sellers, also an attorney and a state House member since 2007, said he is the only candidate who has “actually created a job for someone other than themselves.” “We have an ‘experience’ discussion, and the irony is, I’m some 30 years the junior, but I think I actually bring more experience to the table.” Sellers said that as a state representative, he helped bring 2,800 jobs to Bamberg, Barnwell and Orangeburg counties when a manufacturer moved to Denmark, Sellers’ hometown. “I can’t take credit, like the governor does, for all those jobs,” Sellers...

Why Don We Sell the Club

...MIA ICS Case Writing Group Case Study No. 3 WHY DON’T WE SELL THE CLUB? By Hur Tze Huan CA(M), FCMA(UK), CFP, MBA(UKM), Cert. Trainer The Club Releks Golf & Country Club (the Club) was one of the few members’ clubs in Malaysia. Its 4,000 plus members not only enjoyed golfing and other recreational activities of the Club, they were also each a part owner of the Club’s assets, including the land. The Club’s 36-hole course sat on 300 acres of prime land surrounded by residential and shop-office properties. In addition, the Club had accumulated a cash reserve of RM10 million over the years. This was placed in fixed deposits at several local banks. The organization structure of the Club was just like any other club or association. The President, Vice President, Honorary Secretary, Honorary Treasurer and 8 committee members made up the decision-making inner circle, called the General Committee (the GC). The GC was the equivalent to the board of directors of a company. The biannually elected GC members served on honorary basis. The Club operated on an annual budget of over RM10 million. The operation of the Club was complex. It employed a work force of more than hundred persons to run the day-to-day activities. The work force was headed by the General Manager (GM). Under him there were 11 functional departmental managers or executives. The departments were finance, food and beverages (F&B), golf operation, course maintenance, membership, administration &...

Vices

...* ------------------------------------------------- Six Vices Destroy the Human Life * Some people may think that people are the strongest in the nature. In fact, the human body is rather tender to be threatened by various vices, such as the inadequate intake of water and excessive intake of coffee. These vices can gradually destroy our life.  The first vice is to drink water inadequately, which can cause the aging of brain, induce the cardiovascular diseases and affect the metabolism of kidney. When people are working in office, they usually forget to drink water. In order to prevent the danger, people should absorb enough water for their bodies. However, people with weak intestinal functions should not drink water until they feel thirsty, or the metabolism of water inside the body can be seriously disturbed. The second vice is to regard fruits as main food. Although fruits contain abundant vitamins and sugar, they can not provide protein and trace elements for the human body. The inadequate supplementation of protein will cause nutritional imbalance and induce various diseases. It is necessary for people to know well about their own physical constitutions so as to choose suitable food. The third vice is to drink wine excessively. It is known to all that excessive drinking can cause the liver diseases and affect the reproductive system. If people want to drink wine, they should first understand the variety of wine. It is beneficial for people to drink red grape wine moderately...

Horizon Consulting Patti Smith Case Study

...Horizon Consulting Patti Smith looked up at the bright blue Carolina sky before she entered the offices of Horizon Consulting. Today was Friday, which meant she needed to prepare for the weekly status report meeting. Horizon Consulting is a custom software development company that offers fully integrated mobile application services for iPhone ™ , Android ™ , Windows Mobile ® and BlackBerry ® platforms. Horizon was founded by James Thrasher, a former Marketing executive, who quickly saw the potential for digital marketing via smartphones. Horizon enjoyed initial success in sports marketing, but quickly expanded to other industries. A key to their success was the decline in cost for developing smartphone applications which expanded the client base. The decline in cost was primarily due to learning curve and ability to build customized solutions on established platforms. Patti Smith was a late bloomer who went back to college after working in the restaurant business for nine years. She and her former husband had tried unsuc-cessfully to operate a vegetarian restaurant in Golden, Colorado. After her di-vorce, she returned to University of Colorado where she majored in Management Information Systems with a minor in Marketing. While she enjoyed her marketing classes much more than her MIS classes, she felt the IT know- how acquired would give her an advantage in the job market. This turned out to be true as Horizon hired her to be an Account Manager soon after graduation. Patti Smith...
