BMW summary BMW’s first car engine was a flat twine cylinder engine that only put out 10 Brake Horse Power (BHP). It was too expensive to be made cheaply at the time so BMW had to look elsewhere. In 1928 BMW bought the Dixi Car Company of Eisenach Germany(“BMW Early History”). It began to produce 15BHP twine cylinder engines for its new cars. These new engines did very well and had outstanding reliability for the time. The next line up is the 5 series. The first 5 series was the 501 made from 1951 till 1964. It was a beautifully designed car that some said looked like an angle. It sold very well and had a long production life. The next great 5 series was the 507. It was a small two-seater roadster that was meant for sale on the American market. It had a sleek design and was the inspiration for the modern BMW roadsters. In the mid 1970s the 5 series became BMW’s mid-sized car. The first of the mid sized 5 series had a triangularly sloped hood and all had four doors. It was slightly more luxurious than the 3 series and less set up for performance. The modern 5 series are available in many different ranges of engine. The newer models are very streamline and some even come with onboard computers with TV display. The newest development in the 5 series is the Sequential Manual Gearbox or SMGII. It allows shift by had or by button on the steering wheel. “With its new Sequential Manual Gearbox BMW brings Formula One Technology to the street.”(Schnitzer) BMW has been making cars for almost one hundred years. They began as an aircraft company and then used the meticulous engineering to design top of the line cars. They use the newest available technology to create more efficient and more powerful cars then most other manufacturers. as very bad and inflation was very high.
