She then wishes to lighten the girls’ moods in repayment by putting on a play. Years later, she reflects on the play, saying, “[she remembers] too how pitifully few lived to know the joy of freedom. When [she remembers] the forests of Czechoslovakia, where most of them lie in unmarked graves, [she thanks] God that [she] was able to make them forget. Even now . . . [she feels] humble and grateful. [She knows] that that was the greatest thing [she had] done in [her] life” (141-142).
