Leadership Task #2 – Section C

Working in groups can be an experience that is positive, or negative. Teams that are marred by lack of communication, goals, and organization can be hard to work in. Fortunately, Team W was a team that organized so the group experience was positive. Evaluating different aspects of Team W’s performance through the team contract will show how well Team W worked together to provide a complete handbook. The first section that needs to be discussed is team goals. The first goal was to submit weekly assignments on the established days for each section. The second goal that was set was to check our emails and respond in a timely manner to keep communication open. The final goal was to compile the handbook and send the final product to all team members by August 7th. As a team, all members completed and achieved the goals that were established. Email was the method of communication that was chosen for the team, and as questions came up all team members responded in a timely manner. All members turned in their weekly assignments on time, and the final handbook was distributed to the team by the established date of August 7th. The goals that were set were reasonable and allowed the team to move through the handbook with little problems. Two motivation strategies/theories that were utilized by Team W were the goals theory and coaching. Goals theory is the idea that a team is effective if specific hard goals are established instead of soft goals (Dubrin, 2010). A hard goal would be a specific date the first section of the handbook was to be completed. An example of a soft goal would have been “try your best to finish the first section when you can”. By setting a hard goal, team members knew exactly what is expected of them, and there is no arbitrary timeline to finish the handbook. Team W definitely utilized this

What can motivate one person may not appeal to the next, and vice versa. Imagine coaching a high school basketball team. Each member has a position and is responsible for certain tasks, like setting up the offense, rebounding, setting picks, etc. To get the team to practice and play hard, and to execute the game plan, the coach has to motivate the team.
