1. What advice might you offer Mary Chen to pick up morale in her department? - The first piece of advice I would give Mary would be to acknowledge that there is an issue and talk to her employees. Have an actual meeting and acknowledge that you understand their feelings and know why they feel the way they do. I would then emphasize that their department is still there to provide a valuable service to the public. There are many people out there that need them and have all the best intentions of obtaining a mortgage and then meeting their obligation. The past is the past and it is time to move on to better times.
2. Which leadership roles should Chen emphasize to lead the group out of its funk? - Obviously playing the role of coach and motivator in this case would be extremely important. Mary’s team needs a morale boost even if it is simply a pep talk and a good pat on the back. Team building would also be important as to continue and maintain morale by making those pep talks a regular occasion and creating regular awards to recognize people’s good work.
3. To what extent do you believe the statement of Chen’s manager that “a true leader can guide a group through rough times"? - I actually agree with Mary’s manager quite strongly in this case. A leader can’t always control what may be causing the group to go through a rough time, but they can use their skills and knowledge to keep those folks focused, motivated, and positive. If a leader displays a positive outlook and their cup is always half full even in the roughest of times, the group will tend to follow that lead in the majority of
